Top Offensive Threats in the SMJHL Prospect Tournament - andrew-n - 12-19-2018

Throughout the first 37 days of play in the SMJHL prospect tournament there are many players who are trying to prove themselves; Kakko is showing stellar offensive prowess putting up 40 points, with Gibbles only 3 behind, Jaqueezy is demonstrating his great two-way play posting a +/- of 22 and 1.29 points per game.

However, what many are wondering is who the top offensive threats coming into the draft are. A reputable method to find this is with Goals Created, a stat which compares an individuals goals and assists to the teams total goals and assists to see how important they are, offensively, to the team.

The rankings for top 15 are as follows:

Kakko (16.14 goals created)
Cloutier (14.23 goals created)
Scarn (13.62 goals created)
McShmee and Whacker tied (13.25 goals created)
Yzerman Jr. (13.18 goals created)
Lahey (12.99 goals created)
Shepard (12.79 goals created)
Scholz (12.72 goals created)
Dougherty (12.46 goals created)
McDavid and Jaqueezy tied (12.38 goals created)
Mouette (12.37 goals created)
Luffy (12.19 goals created)
Elliot (11.81 goals created)

Right off the bat it is obvious that some players change positions relative to the point leaders, this is because Goals Created values a goal more than an assist because a player with many goals is more likely to be able to replicate that success with less than ideal teammates than one who has many assists.

Since the majority of Gibbles points come from assists he doesn’t even make the top 15, conversely Cloutier who mostly has goals ranks much further up.

I'm just happy to be racking up the assists. It's always hard to get a good metric for comparing assists and goals.
