PGS S45 Game 105: HAL v VAN - Flareon - 01-15-2019

Welcome to Game 105 of the 45th Season of the SMJHL

         HALIFAX Raiders v VANCOUVER Whalers
   raiders v Whalers

The 105th total game of the SMJHL regular season saw Halifax travel across the entire great land of Canada to rivals Vancouver. The Raiders were chasing just their second win of the season, after their first came courtesy of a 3-1 victory after a visit from Detroit 2 weeks previously. Vancouver were looking hopeful for another win in an effort to surge their way up the table early into the season.

1st Period
Vancouver kept in control of the first period, which showed with an early unsportsmanlike conduct minor to Mr Faceoffs, and his aggravation reflected in the rest of the East Canadian team. The penalty was ultimately fruitless for Vancouver and the Raiders hit back not a minute later, with Choybuk and Doskocil charged up the ice and way past the set up Whalers now-expired power play to shoot home an unstoppable goal for Stevens. The Raiders kept up their pressure as Troy Reynolds nets his first goal of his SMJHL career just seconds off of the opening goal, courtesy of assists from the top line defenders Muerto and Montgomery. Vancouver soon regained their control and this showed after a goal from Nowes dropped their deficit to only 1 goal. This game off of a well set up play and a lot of zone time for the whalers. At the end of the period the Whalers were out-shooting the Raiders 9-7.

Goals
Mikeal Choybuk (HAL) 7:07 - Assisted by Andrej Doskocil
Troy Reynolds (HAL) 7:23 - Assisted by Vegeta Muerto, Dominic Montgomery
Noah Nowes (VAN) 11:04 - Assisted by Shaquille Derisraka, Jack Kennedy

2nd Period
Halifax got off to a rough start to the second period after shakily leading the first period, going on the penalty kill thanks to a slashing call going against Choybuk just seven seconds into the period. The match returned to 5 on 5 hockey for just 30 seconds before Morgan was called down for a high-stick. The second penalty died just like the first, but the Halifax players were already a lot more fatigued than their Vancouver counterparts. This was proven after Mikulak tied the game up just five minutes into the period. Halifax hit back just a minute later with the third liner Matsson scoring his third point of the season. The goal would prove to be the game winning goal, with Vancouver, while out-shooting their rivals, unable to capitalise on any shots.

Goals
Petr Mikulak (VAN) 5:16 - Assisted by Trey Ward, Rudy Mentz
Kristoffer Matsson (HAL) 6:34 - Assisted by Andrej Doskocil, Touncie Bitties

3rd Period
The third period was relatively quiet, with all the action happening within the first few minutes. Vegeta Muerto took another penalty for roughing with the Whalers just 30 seconds into the period. Just 20 seconds after Halifax killed it, Rainbow Dash and Dylan Karlsson charged out of their own zone in what appeared to be a deja vu of the play from earlier. Dash fired it home and in what eventually proved to seal the deal for Halifax, scoring them their second win of the season. They put on an impressive display against a Vancouver team who out shot them 29-22, with McKorsy putting on an impressive display, with a 0.931SV% for the match.

Goals
Rainbow Dash (HAL) 2:56 - Assisted by Dylan Karlsson

Three Stars
1) Troy Reynolds raiders  1G, +/-2, 18:35 TOI
2) Kristoffer Matsson raiders 1G, +/-2
3) Rainbow Dash raiders 1G, GW

Game 105 Simweek 5 Halifax Raiders @ Vancouver Whalers

At British Columbia Mike McKorsy could get his second win of the season. With a stellar performance (27 Saves on 29 Shots) he outplayed the Vancouver goalie Casimir Stevens clearly. Stevens was pulled out of the goal from his coach in this came and replaced by Eddy Ask Jr. "That was one of my best performances, but I am grateful for my defense corps who helped me out all game. The longer the game went I got more acclimated. Maybe the extra training the last few days really payed out.", Mike McKorsy stated after the game.

Comment 1 -
Halifax looking to turn season around

With the raiders being able to hold off the whalers for the win, and this making it only their 2nd win of the season. While being out-shot, and on the edge of being outplayed. Halifax was able to get a 2-0 lead early, only for the whalers to get two unanswered goals near the mid point of the first, and at the beginning of the second. Halifax was able to battle back, and pot one right after Vancouver tied the game. Halifax will be needing to dig deep and pull off these kind of wins if the want to be taken seriously for the rest of the season. Even though ever team makes the playoffs this year they will need some sort of confidence when matched up against higher seeded teams.

Comment 2-
Vancouver's Casmir Stevens preparedness being questioned.

Some are questioning if Stevens took this game seriously. Looking at the struggling Halifax, it might have been easy to pass this off as a easy win. This game turned out to be tough for Stevens as he got the hook early in the third period after the raiders took a 4-2 lead with a softy. The whalers coach was clearly not impressed as his team was outplaying, and out-shooting the whalers at that point. When only down by 1 goal, and the team completely deflated after Stevens let that one in. Stevens only stopped 11 shots out of 15 before being yanked, and it is rumoured that the coach had some choice words for Stevens in the dressing room after the game.

RE: PGS S45 Game 105: HAL v VAN - StadiumGambler - 01-15-2019

COMMENT ONE: Wild Raiders Appear For Once

-The Halifax locker room is no stranger to controversy and tabloid headlines, thats for sure. However, two of the main pieces of kindling in the drama fire stepped up today when the team needed 2 points. The first was Troy Reynolds, who got first star of the game thanks to a key first period goal, just 16 seconds after teammate Mikael Choybuk opened the scoring. Reynolds was also buzzing around the net all night with 5 shots and logged significant time on key penalty kills for the Raiders. The second was goalie Mike McKorsky, who stopped 27 of 29 and held the dangerous Nowes-Derisraka-Kennedy line to just a goal. The Raiders need players like these to step up, and provide a little more hockey and a little less post-game nightclub brawls.....

COMMENT TWO: Whalers Defense And Goaltending Left Shipwrecked

-Vancouver got a bad outing tonight from the defensive core and goaltender Casimir Stevens. While the statsheet could point the finger at the second pairing of Egor Kucherov and Tauras Karazija (who had a double minus-three night), the first two goals were created off turnovers by the forwards, one from a bodycheck and one from a bad pass. Clearly the Whalers bench boss felt Stevens was ultimately the culprit though, and pulled him after giving up the backbreaking 4th goal in the 3rd period to Rainbow Dash. Eddy Ask Jr came in and did his usual fine job to hold the fort and try to spur on a Whalers comeback but it was not to be. Although Stevens is still seen as the better talent overall, the statline has been rough for him this season, while Ask has shined in his spot starts. One has to wonder if the Whalers will give their backup more chances down the stretch.......

COMMENT THREE: Whalers Stars Can't Pick Up The Slack

-Although the defense and goaltending were off-putting, the Whalers still could've won this game. The Raiders were chippy tonight and took 6 penalties, but the Whalers did not cash in on any of those powerplays. With a top line like Nowes, Derisraka and Kennedy, backed up by creative defensemen in Karazija and Barret McCarthy, you have to expect more in games like these from your stars. Halifax has been near the bottom of the standings since just past the start of the year, and the Whalers may have blown 2 easy points that could help them in terms of playoff seeding. Hopefully that won't come back to bite them.....

RE: PGS S45 Game 105: HAL v VAN - Ask - 01-15-2019

Comment #1: The Slump (112 words)
The Whalers started out the season great and shared the top spot for some time. Lately however there's been something bothering the team and things aren't going their way. While normally second in the league with their aggressive Power Play, this game they went 0 out of 6 attempts. The Raiders shocked the Whalers when 7 minutes into the first period they scored two back-to-back goals within 16 seconds. The Whalers coach immediately called a time out and talked first and foremost to his starting goaltender Casimir Stevens. The time out paid off and Noah Nowes went out and scored his 10th goal of the season to cut the deficit in half.

Comment #2: Whalers Tandem (126 words)
In the second period the Whalers were quick to tie the game up but the Raiders were just as quick to take back their lead. When the third period started and the Raiders scored once again, the Whalers coach had enough and pulled Stevens who had only saved 11 out of 15 shots. This has become a common sight within the Whalers with Swedish backup goaltender Eddy Ask Jr. relieving Stevens after him letting up too many goals. Ask did what he always does and kept it shut for the rest of game. Is there any tension between the goaltenders about the starting job or does the Whalers recent problems lie somewhere else? Only time will tell, but the Whalers need to get back to winning.

Comment #3: Germany vs Sweden (107 words)
In the other net was German goaltender Mike McKorsy, playing a solid game and only letting up two goals on 29 shots. Facing off against Eddy Ask Jr. made older fans reminisce about the good old days when Eddy's father Edwin Ask was playing against fellow retiree Michael McKorsy, both Season 10 draftees who competed against each other both in the juniors and later at SHL level. Germany and Sweden has a good relationship when it comes to sports and it will be fun to see this friendly competition once again on this higher level and especially exciting to see what happens in the S46 SHL Draft.

2) Another physical game by the Halifax Raiders! As expected, Perry Morgan took the most hits on his team with 5, tying up Shaquille Derisraka for the game's top most hits by an individual player. There was a fairly large discrepancy between the two teams and the number of hits they gave. The Raiders gave a whopping 25 bone-crunching hits to their opponent, whereas the Whalers had 17 hits total. Ouch! The Whalers must have felt that in the morning. For the Whalers, three players made up approximately 65% of their team's overall hits for the game, and 10 players on their skating roster without a single hit. For the Raiders, their top 5 hitters consisted of 5 players and accounted for 72% of their team's overall hits, and 8 players on their skating roster were left without a single hit.

3) Something to point out is that although the Raiders has a constant physical presence throughout the game, they were lacking on overall shots. They ended the game with a total of 22 shots against the Whalers' 29 shots. It does look like Vancouver's starting goalie, Stevens, had a rough game, letting in 4 goals in 15 shots. Stevens was replaced by Eddy Ask Jr. shortly after the start of the 3rd period, where he then stopped all 7 shots against him. Some might say the result of this game could have been very different had Eddy started the game in net instead. Others may argue that by the time Eddy got on the ice, the Whalers were far too sore from the physical punishment they suffered throughout the game by the Raiders to provide effective shots, which is why they were quite easy to stop for the goaltender. Nobody knows for sure, but we can agree that this was a hard-fought battle for the Raiders to win.

RE: PGS S45 Game 105: HAL v VAN - goldenglutes - 01-16-2019

Comment One:
Glutes Media's Three Stars of the Game
Note: These stars may be different from those determined by the sim.

First Star: Kristoffer Matsson (HAL)
In a game where the whole team fully contributed towards the win, Matsson was given the first star for scoring the game winning goal. The rookie third line center also recorded a +/- of 2 .

Second Star: Rainbow Dash (HAL)
The second line winger not only scored the final goal of the game to secure a two-goal lead for his team, but also registered 4 big hits in a brutal reminder to the Whalers to keep their heads up.

Third Star: Troy Reynolds (HAL)
Another star from the third line, Reynolds scored the second goal of the game to put his team ahead by two early on. Reynolds was also key to his team's defensive prowess with a whopping 5:51 minutes spent on the penalty kill.

Comment Two:
Turning Point of the Season: Halifax's Second Win of the Season
This is Halifax's first win in 6 games, and their second win of the season. It's no secret that the Raiders have been struggling this season, but this game may have been the one to bust the slump. After this crucial win, the Raiders then went on to win 4 of their next 10 games -- a huge improvement on the team's 0.050 winrate prior to this game. Their opponent was no slouch, either. The Whalers were having a respectable season -- prior to this game, they were boasting a 0.550 winrate, and were fairly competitive in the standings. If the Raiders manage to turn it around and have a great end to their season, we can point to this game as the turning point of their season.

Comment Three:
Goalie of the Game: Mike McKorsy (HAL)
McKorsy was the clear choice in this game. He had a fantastic game between the pipes, posting a 0.931 save percentage, stopping 27 shots of the 29 he faced. This game was slated to be a battle of the rookie goalies between Mike McKorsy and Casimir Stevens, two rookies who have stolen the starting jobs away from their more experience counterparts. However, Stevens was not able to hold up quite as well this game, and ended up getting chased after giving up 4 goals on 15 shots. McKorsy will be a goalie that we'll keep a close eye on in the future, and we'd love to see him be the steady building block of the team as the Raiders prepare to turn their season around.

RE: PGS S45 Game 105: HAL v VAN - Im_A_Boonana - 01-16-2019

Perry the Brutapus:
Perry Morgan, a new member to the Halifax Raiders this season, has definitely made himself seen, known, and felt on the team. This defenseman has quickly made himself known as the Halifax Goon. Just this game, Morgan managed to make 5 big hits and two minutes in the Sin Bin for a high stick early in the second period. This isn't necessarily a bad thing though. Morgan has brought a powerful force to the team both on and off the ice. He's made a huge impact in the Locker Room, raising player morale all around. On the ice, he manages to unnerve opposing players and still is able to capitalize when the chance arises. Perry Morgan is a great addition to the team and we look forward to seeing more from him.

Comment 1:

ONE FOR OLD MEMORIES: Rainbow Dash Ices the Game

It is no secret that the Halifax Raiders are in another rebuilding year so it is no surprise that they have started shipping off some of their high TPE veterans for future assets.  One such move was the trade of Rainbow Dash.  We can look back on one of Dash's last points with Halifax: the goal that iced the game in this rare Raiders win.  The Raiders found themselves ahead 3-2 in the third period's second shift, when Rainbow Dash picked up a nifty pass from Dylan Karlsson leaving the Halifax zone.  Dash skated into the Whalers' zone and fired a goal past Casimir Stevens.  Vancouver opted to remove Stevens from the game for the remainder of the third period, but they were unable to overcome Dash's insurance goal.  Rainbow Dash would be named the third star in this, one of Dash's final games in Halifax.

Comment 2:

HIT SQUAD: Perry Morgan and Shaquille Derisraka Go Hit For Hit

It was a physical game between the Raiders and Whalers, with two players on each squad looking to out pace the other in the hit department.  Both Perry Morgan and Shaquille Derisraka made it a spirited affair with their physical play and they both ended the game with five his each.  This is not a shock coming from either player: Derisraka is currently second in the SMJHL in total hits this season and Morgan leads the Raiders in total hits.  Despite the rough play, the only penalty between the players was an accidental high sticking call to Morgan in the second period.  Both players were complimentary of the other post game, but vowed to out hit their opponent the next time the two teams meet.

Comment 3:

NOT SO POWERFUL PLAY: Halifax Penalty Kill Shuts Down Vancouver

The Raiders gave the Whalers plenty of opportunities to do damage on the power play during this game but Vancouver refused to capitalize by going scoreless on all six of their power plays.  Halifax was lead by top penalty kill tandem Mr. Faceoffs and Mikael Choybuk at forward, and Dominic Montgomery and Vegeta Muerto on the backend.  Along with a second penalty kill unit bolstered by Perry Morgan and Troy Reynolds, the Raiders were able to smother any scoring opportunities the Whalers manufactured.  When pucks did get through the penalty killers goalie Mike McKorsy came up with timely saves to keep the puck from the back of the net.  Not known as a strong team on the kill, Halifax will look to keep this up as the season progresses.

RE: PGS S45 Game 105: HAL v VAN - gillon - 01-19-2019

Rookie tender McKorsy shows up big!
The rookie-filled Raiders team certainly haven't had an easy season so far, scrambling to get as many wins as they can, but this bout versus the Whalers would see them as the victors by the end of it. When the dust settled we we're left with a 4-2 scoreline, favoring the Raiders, and as the honors were given out in the form of the traditinal three stars of the game they were seen going to the point scorers of the game. To me, the real hero was rookie goaltender Mike McKorsy, who showed up when it was needed. Saving 27 out of 29 shots for a save percentage of 93.1% earned him his 2nd win of the season, and one I'm sure he'll treasure. To me, he was the real first star.

RE: PGS S45 Game 105: HAL v VAN - Kalakar - 01-19-2019

#1: The Vancouver Whalers slightly overpower the Halifax Raiders on the dot. With 46/84 faceoffs won by Vancouver, the Whalers centers seem to be on top of their game. With a .55% faceoff win, the Vancouver head coach knows his players can take the precious faceoffs in the offensive zone while on the PP and also the defensive starts in their own zone. Halifax, on the other end, won merely 38/84 faceoffs, and that is including their top center Mr. Faceoffs. He might not have been on top of his game tonight, as he registered 13/28 faceoffs win for a 46% win ratio.

RE: PGS S45 Game 105: HAL v VAN - Citizen of Adraa - 01-20-2019

Comment 1: Unexpected production

The only multi-point player in this game is very surprisingly Andrej Doskocil, a defensive defenseman from Raiders. This is the first time he got multiple points in a game in his career, and even if it hasn't secured him any star of the game, this is a good sign for Halifax as depth scoring and depth production can be a massive issue for even the most talented teams out there. Halifax, with how their second line has been going, and with occasional help from third and their defensive core, don't have to be afraid that they won't be able to find that crucial goal even if the top line isn't quite going.

Comment 2: Bad game

The second defensive pairing of Colorado with Tauras Karazija and Egor Kucherov has had a very poor performance indeed. With both of them having -3 on their scoresheet, they have been a liability that Halifax managed to exploit for own gains. The fact that this is a pair performing poorly, not two separate defenseman, makes you wonder if Vancouver's coaching staff shouldn't be looking to mix and match the players a bit differently if this keeps being a problem coming into future games. However, for all we know, this might have been a one game oopsie and there is nothing to be worried about with Whalers' blue line.

Comment 3: Goalie contest

This game had a very special competition - the two statistically worst goalies of the league have squared against each other, trying to be the wall their team needs to win. And while Vancouver hasn't been hurt much by Stevens' poor performances even when he is their starter, Halifax had more than enough issues in their season to be able to wrestle games with McKorsy not being up to snuff. However, McKorsy stepped up, and showed us why Halifax drafted him, and what potential they see in the rookie goaltender. We will see how the two compare across the season more indirectly through stats, but in this game, McKorsy clearly showed Stevens he isn't a pushover and deserves to be a starter.

RE: PGS S45 Game 105: HAL v VAN - Daco - 01-24-2019

Comment #1 (Halifax blowout) 105 words

In this game Halifax managed to score 4 goals total. They all happened to come against Vancouver's starting goalie, Casimir Stevens. In the 3rd period Stevens was chased from the net in favor of relief goaltender Eddie Ask. Ask finished out the rest of the game very well, with 7 saves on 7 shots he didn't manage to get Vancouver the win, but he did at least not contribute to the loss more. With a total of 21 shots on goal it was less a matter of Halifax dominating as it was scoring opportunistically on a good percentage. This was a great performance for this team.

The third star of this game was from the winning team Halifax, Rainbow Dash. Rainbow scored a goal on 6 shots and 4 hits. The 4 hits led the game and he was really a wrecking ball out there hitting left and right. The second star of the game was from Halifax as well. Kristoffer Matsson scored a goal and tied for the lead on the game with a positive 2 net rating. Solid 2 way play from Kris. The first star of the game was Troy Reynolds. Troy is a known shittalker and also a big meanie but he's stuck on the worst team so it makes sense.

The storyboard of this game has both a lot to do with and nothing to do with special teams. It was the utter lack of a powerplay for either team. You could say that Vancouver's powerplay of 0 for 6 opportunities is why they lost. They failed to come up with enough scoring opportunities and as a result could not make up for the deficit that Stevens created letting in all those goals. Halifax did not score on 4 attempts but they managed to score on regular 5 on 5 so it did not end up being to the detriment of the team as they still managed to acquire the win.

RE: PGS S45 Game 105: HAL v VAN - Ason94 - 01-24-2019

Defensively solid!

Despite Vancouver whalers loss to Halifax Raiders tonight Vancouver had, in my mind a really stand out player, Rudy Mentz. The 5ft 9in two-way center from Germany is playing his first season in the SMJHL and is doing well. He plays a strong 200 foot game and tonight is no exception, taking a total of 14 faceoffs winning 11 of them for 78.5% wins. Playing only 11:57 in the game he got an assist on a goal scored by Petr Mikulak in the second period to make the game even at 2-2. Unfortunately Halifax Raiders Kristoffer Matsson scored just 1:15 later.

RE: PGS S45 Game 105: HAL v VAN - Pris - 01-25-2019

Russian wrecking ball:

Center Shaquille Derisraka gets the Russian spotlight of the night. The junior was a one-man wrecking crew tonight, putting up five hits and an assist on the night in what would ultimately be a futile effort for Vancouver. Let’s run a couple of his highlights tonight.

A stunning hit onto Perry Morgan to lose the puck started the first period.

A beautiful assist from Derisraka helped put the Whalers up by 1 and cut a first-period deficit in half.

Derisraka brings a stable experienced presence to the forward lines in Russia, having been trained by former Wolfpack legend Patrikov Bure. Derisraka serves as a bright young light for the future, bringing both physicality and a scoring touch back to the federation.
