As before, a quick background: These rankings are based on TPE and S54 production, as well as a little bit of team situation and player opportunity. They are a follow up to my pre - S53 rankings, so we have a bit better idea of how FHM impacts player performance. I cannot predict how GM’s might deploy their lines, so this is supposed to represent the best line that a GM could make using mostly players in their natural positions. The TPE was taken last week pre-regression, so if a player has a * next to their TPE, that indicates that they are in regression and their TPE to start the season will be 100-200 TPE lower than listed.
As with my other articles, I wanted to showcase some of the up and coming talent in the league! These players were either recent rookies or upcoming rookies in the SHL and are all challenging for their team’s top line position. For one reason or another, they aren’t quite there, but they are all players on the rise to keep your eyes on. Now let’s get into it!

YOUNG GUNZ:

Augustus Wang, Buffalo Stampede  Stampede

TPE: 1274

S54 Stats: 4G, 23A, 27P, +39

Kicking off the young gunz section is the 4th highest earner in the S50 draft, Agustus Wang. By virtue of playing for Buffalo – one of the most stacked teams at any position in the league – Wang has not had much of an opportunity so far. In S54 he played 2nd pairing minutes, and on a team that has basically two 1st lines to play with, Wang was able to capitalize with 27 points – more than several of the players that actually made the rankings. Wang will eventually take the place of regressing defenders Poopity Scoop, Alexander Selich and Cassius Darrow. For now though, those three are still close to 2K TPE (more on them later) and will hold down top positions within Buffalo for many more seasons before Wang takes center stage.

Bjorn Leppanen, Texas Renegades  Renegades

TPE: 1193

S54 Stats: 2G, 4A, 6P, -8

Another S50 stud defender, Bjorn Leppanen is slightly behind Augustus Wang in TPE (not as much shown here, as Wang’s TPE numbers were taken today). He also plays a more defensive style for the Texas Renegades. The Renegades aren’t as loaded as the Stampede, so he isn’t in as good a position in terms of forward support for his personal production. Where Leppanen has the advantage is that he is in line to step up to the top pairing shortly – and maybe even this season depending on lines. Texas’s defenseman are sitting around the same TPE level as Leppanen, and with Nikolai Evans announcing his retirement after S55, we should see Leppanen stepping into that top defender role for the ever improving Renegades.

Sven Yxskaft, New England Wolfpack  Wolfpack

TPE: 881

S54 Stats (SMJHL): 3G, 16A, 19P, +5

Sven Yxskaft is making the jump to the New England Wolfpack in Season 54 after spending 4 seasons in the juniors. Yxskaft was considered one of the top defenders in the juniors, and will be a key piece in the Wolfpack rebuild. Yxskaft is also the top earner in the S52 class, meaning he is sure to be a stud in no time. With the last minute trade of Dominic Montgomery to the Wolfpack (more on that later), Yxskaft won’t have a path directly to the top line, but in a few seasons as New England’s top players regress, he should be able to step into the top line position and take the reigns for 10+ seasons.

POWER RANKINGS:

16. Jakob Hamr and Liam O’Callaghan, Tampa Bay Barracuda  Barracuda

TPE: 757 (Hamr) || 883* (O’Callaghan)

S54 Stats: 0G, 6A, 6P, -86 (Hamr) || 3G, 9A, 12P, -87 (O’Callaghan)

Oh boy. I don’t mean to keep beating on Tampa, but their top line defensive pair is in a bad situation for S55. Hamr is still young – a member of the previously talked about S50 draft class – and O’Callaghan is several seasons into regression. Currently they are both replacement level TPE wise, but that is to be expected from Tampa – who iced a sub 300 TPE average 3rd pairing last season. As seen from their record setting +/- numbers, they got dominated last season, and nothing is set to change in S55. For this reason, the duo’s production and opportunity are so limited that they can only rank last here.

15. Ursin Zimmerman and Jack Kanoff, Toronto North Stars  Stars

TPE: 1029 (Zimmerman) || 715 (Kanoff)

S54 Stats: 6G, 24A, 30P, -46 || 9G, 18A, 27P, +2 (Kanoff) (SMJHL Stats)

A clear step up on 16th place is the Toronto North Stars. Several steps ahead of Tampa in their current rebuild, Zimmerman and Kanoff are a showcase of Toronto’s top line for years to come. Zimmerman has been the top dog for Toronto for a few seasons now, and Kanoff is a callup from the SMJHL set to make his SHL debut. Kanoff is one of the top earners in the S53 class, and while he is still low on TPE for a top pairing defender, the sky is the limit for him. Zimmerman had a gaudy amount of shot blocks in S54, which helped his fantasy score, but also shows how out-shot Toronto was. His 30 points are really solid for being on a bad team, so he will hope to replicate that again. As Toronto nears closer to the end of their rebuild, we should see this group shoot up the rankings, especially as they have top end prospects Axel Mezaros and Ryosuke Sato waiting in the wings should either Zimmerman or Kanoff falter.

14. Nat Emerson and Delver Fudgeson, Baltimore Platoon  Platoon

TPE: 1683* (Emerson) || 1004 (Fudgeson)

S54 Stats: 6G, 12A, 18P, -22 (Emerson) || 6G, 7A, 13P, -17 (Fudgeson)

Emerson and Fudgeson check in here, just above Toronto. While Baltimore is on the decline – signaling a rebuild by trading away star blue liner Geoff Moore among other pieces, Toronto is on the rise at the end of their lengthy rebuild. As it stands, the two teams are in a pretty similar place opportunity wise, and what differentiates here is the Platoon’s duo advantage in TPE. For his part, Emerson just entered his first season of regression, but should still have a decent season for the Platoon. Fudgeson steps up into the top line after the aforementioned Moore was shipped off to the Manhattan rage. He had an alright season for a bottom feeder team in S54, but with the position the Platoon are in, I don’t expect either of these players to have amazing seasons in S55 – unless you count shot blocks. Those will be plentiful!

13. Mathias Seger and Noah Tedla, Minnesota Chiefs  Chiefs

TPE: 1790 (Seger) || 985 (Tedla)

S54 Stats: 6G, 16A, 22P, -22 (Seger) || 3G, 16A, 19P, -19 (Tedla)

The Minnesota Chiefs duo is one of the more lopsided top line defensive pairings in the league TPE wise. Seger is one of the top earners from the S46 class, and Tedla is a S48 straggler right around 1K TPE. Seger is an absolute stud of a defenseman, and will once again hold down the fort for Minnesota. As with a lot of the struggling teams already touched on, top line defenders on the teams set to be rebuilders do not profile well. They will struggle to score, and their +/- numbers will likely still be atrocious. Seger does have an advantage over anyone mentioned previously however, as he has one of the top TPE levels among all defenders. But with a replacement level defender next to him, we might not see Seger excel to the same level that he might. Tedla isn’t awful by any means – just more suited for a 2nd or 3rd line role than top line pairing minutes.

12. Charlie Schieck and Ray Bork, San Francisco Pride  pride

TPE: 1393* (Schieck) || 1442* (Bork)

S54 Stats: 4G, 14A, 18P, -11 (Schieck) || 5G, 19A, 24P, -7 (Bork)

Oh boy. I am glad all of last nights trades happened before I put out the rankings, as they were dramatically changed as a result. San Francisco traded away their two top defenders (who show up later in this ranking). The duo previously ranked 5th here, so it is a pretty hearty fall for the Pride. Schieck and Bork are decent TPE wise, however will both be regressing again before the season begins. Both Schieck and Bork had decent production, although they were on San Francisco’s second line so their totals reflect that. With the firesale of San Francisco, the Pride are likely to be rebuilders in S55 which will suggest that the top pair duo might not see an increase in their numbers, and likely will see their +/- numbers plummet. For a pair of regressing players, this does not bode well and we are likely seeing the demise of San Francisco’s mighty defense.

11. Nikolai Evans and Noah Brusky, Texas Renegades  Renegades

TPE: 1291 (Evans) || 1144 (Brusky)

S54 Stats: 5G, 26A, 31P, +12 (Evans) || 7G, 16A, 23P, -11 (Brusky)

A clear step above the 12 ranked Pride top line defense is the pair from the Texas Renegades. While about equal in terms of TPE (after regression), the Renegades differentiate themselves in the fact that they are a team fighting for a playoff spot – which lead to much higher production. The Renegades lost Harvey Danger to retirement this season, which is where Brusky steps up from the second line. This is also Evans last season, as he announced his retirement prior to this season. As such, it is a tumultuous time in Texas, and we should see some younger studs such as Leppanen step up to the top line next season. For now, Evans should provide a steady hand for his final season, and Brusky will get a chance to prove his worth on the top line.

10. Dominic Montgomery and Perry Morgan, New England Wolfpack  Wolfpack

TPE: 1819* (Montgomery) || 1447 (Morgan)

S54 Stats: 6G, 25A, 31P, +20 (Montgomery) || 3G, 20A, 23P, +5 (Morgan)

Starting off of the top 10 we have a brand new duo for the top defensive pairing from the New England Wolfpack. Montgomery was acquired last minute from the San Francisco Pride – an odd move from a rebuilding team, as Montgomery is regressing. Regardless, he will help the Wolfpack keep afloat above some of the worst Eastern Conference teams. Morgan has been promoted off the second line after jettisoning top line defenders Rex Kirkby and Guy Zheng over the offseason. He had solid production for a second line player – 23 points – and will look to at least equal that on the Wolfpack’s top line. This may be a challenging year offensively for the Wolfpack defenders due to their status in the east: better than the rebuilders of Baltimore, Tampa Bay and Toronto – but not good enough to compete with the best of the conference.

9. Slip McScruff and Adam Barron, Winnipeg Jets  Jets

TPE: 2006* (McScruff) || 1233 (Barron)

S54 Stats: 6G, 16A, 22P, -6 (McScruff) || 4G, 17A, 21P, -1 (Barron)

Up one spot from my pre – S53 rankings is the Winnipeg Jets top defensive pairing. McScruff crossed 2K TPE in S54, and should be a force to be reckoned with for many seasons. He was a physical beast in S54, being one of the top players in terms of hits and shot blocks. Barron is the young gun – a top earner in the S50 class and will easily be one of the better defenders in the SHL in no time. As the Jets improve, we should see Barron’s point total rise. McScruff will play the stay at home defender to Barron’s attacker and that dynamic should see consistent improvement from the pair.

8. Andrej Doskocil and Barret McCarthy, Manhattan Rage  Rage

TPE: 1452 (Doskocil) || 1828* (McCarthy)

S54 Stats: 3G, 12A, 15P, +1 (Doskocil) || 7G, 22A, 29P, -6 (McCarthy)

Beginning a new tier of top defensive pairings is the Manhattan Rage duo of Andrej Doskocil and Barret McCarthy. What defines tis tier is that everyone here plays for a top contending team. This should lead to better stats overall as they will be doing the out-shooting rather than being out shot. Doskocil is a S46 rock for Manhattan – not a top earner by the classes standards, but his 1500ish TPE is nothing to scoff at. He is also a hitting machine and will punish opposing teams because of it. The newly acquired Geoff Moore is also an option here, but he is regressing and will likely occupy their second line spot. McCarthy is entering his second season of regression so will start off around 1700 TPE. He should have another good season, and playing with talents such as Thomason, Wagstrom, Winters and more should lead to another impressive season, although he could improve his +/- rating. If anything, New Engaland blowing it up should help both of the Rage top line defenders, as they now get 6 games apiece against Baltimore, Tampa Bay and New England – which should all be stat padding wins.

7. Oliver Cleary and Tony Ford, Los Angeles Panthers  Panthers

TPE: 1437 (Cleary) || 1473 (Ford)

S54 Stats: 7G, 23A, 30P, +14 (Cleary) || 7G, 22A, 29P, +7 (Ford)

Here we have the top line pairing from Los Angeles – two younger defenders for this high up the rankings. Ford is a S47 player – 14th in his class, but Cleary is the 5th ranked earner in S48. That youth will allow them to increase their ranking here before regression, as both are still approaching their peak. For their part, they had a decent S54 – both about 30 points on the championship contending team. Cleary had a pretty impressive +14 – best among the top two lines of defenders on the Panthers. Los Angeles sent away a few decent veterans in a trade to Edmonton – which could hamper Los Angeles contention chances. This in turn could hurt Cleary and Ford as they attempt to turn out career seasons.

6. Rex Kirkby and Lyle Odelein III, New Orleans Specters  Specters

TPE: 1948* (Kirkby) || 1528 (Odelein III)

S54 Stats: 7G, 32A, 39P, +23 (Kirkby) || 11G, 21A, 32P, +1 (Odelein III)

Yet another augmented top pairing defense. With a lot of movement over the offseason – and two strong defensive teams blowing it up – New Orleans picked up one of the top defenders on the market, and it reflects in their ranking here. Rex Kirkby was acquired from the New England Wolfpack in a mega deal that gets Kirkby onto the reigning cup champions. The S53 stud tickled 2K TPE for the third season in a row, but his regression will take him further out of that window. Despite that, he will still have a really solid TPE level. That combined with New Orleans dominant position in the West and high TPE forwards will leave Kirkby in a position to have one of his best seasons yet – surpassing the very solid 39 points he posted with New England last season. Odelein III is a member of the S48 class and is one of the top earners there. This pair (or maybe even the other S48 standout Kaspers Claude) will likely be higher on this list in the next few seasons, as they are entering their prime only now.

5. Brady McIntyre and Karlstrabe Scholz, Edmonton Blizzard  Blizzard

TPE: 1681* (McIntyre) || 1826 (Scholz)

S54 Stats: 11G, 23A, 34P, +3 (McIntyre) || 10G, 31A, 41P, +5 (Scholz)

In the exact spot that they ranked in my previous series of articles, McIntyre and Scholz are still an elite defensive duo. Brady McIntyre is a former member of the 2000 TPE and is still kicking it thanks to aggressive regression fighting. The S39 veteran put up 34 points and played a physical game to compliment Scholz and his 41 points – slightly more offensively oriented. Scholz is yet another elite member of the S46 class, and his TPE totals will be at or close to 2K by the time he hits regression. With Edmonton coming into a league of their own in the west (helped by a solid trade with Los Angeles for some reinforcements) they should be a top line pairing to watch out for.

4. Gabriel Johnson and Guy Zheng, Hamilton Steelhawks  Steelhawks

TPE: 1515 (Johnson) || 1851 (Zheng)

S54 Stats: 8G, 36A, 44P, +35 (Johnson) || 9G, 23A, 32P, +12 (Zheng)

Another top line pairing that has changed since last season, Guy Zheng was acquired from the New England Wolfpack to replace regressing veteran Tig Murphy on the top pairing for the Hamilton Steelhawks. As he nears 2K TPE, Zheng should reap the rewards of being placed in a system that will likely see him dominate if he is put in the right opportunity. Despite only registering 32 points for the Wolfpack last season, I think he will break out because of Hamilton’s impressive strategic dominance that has seen the team make the finals (and win one) in both of the first seasons on FHM. For his part, Johnson is the top earner in the S48 class. He got lots of power play time and scored an impressive 44 points – tied for 4th among all top line defenders analyzed here. He may fade a little statistically if Zheng eats up some of his responsibilities, but I would still expect him to have a very strong S55, especially as Hamilton is again poised to be a strong team.

3. Brennan Kennedy Jr. and Leopold Lockhart, Calgary Dragons  Dragons

TPE: 1830 (Kennedy Jr.) || 1937* (Lockhart)

S54 Stats: 14G, 34A, 48P, +14 (Kennedy Jr. || 5G, 26A, 31P, +22 (Lockhart)

With the fleecing of San Francisco getting Leopold Lockhart to Calgary, the Dragons took a last minute charge up the list and find themselves ranked 3rd when the dust settled. Lockhart is a former 2K player entering his first season of regression. At the time of the trade he was considered inactive – so it will remain to be seen if he will fight regression and help keep Calgary’s spot near the top of these rankings. In S55 though, he should have a fantastic season – and will certainly improve on his 31 points while surrounded by the talent that is in Calgary. Kennedy Jr. Is another S46 stud near the top of his class. He should have a chance to reach 2K TPE, and is set to form a formidable pairing with Lockhart. His 48 points were second only to Parker Smeb for defenseman in S54, and he should get some award attention because of it. This duo is reaching peak, but will likely stay near the top for seasons to come.

2. Corey Kennedy and Parker Smeb, Chicago Syndicate  syndicate

TPE: 1763 (Kennedy) || 1516 (Smeb)

S54 Stats: 13G, 35A, 48P, +40 (Kennedy) || 17G, 38A, 55P, +37 (Smeb)

This duo came out of nowhere in S54, registering the two highest point totals by defensemen. Smeb in particular shocked everyone as his 55 points and 337 hits were an electric combination. Kennedy was less praised but still excellent – 48 points with a better +/- rating than Smeb at +40. They were a part of Chicago’s phenominal top line that produced unfathomable offensive output in S54. In terms of TPE, Kennedy is the TPE leader from S47, and should see him start to peak as he inches closer to regression. Smeb is a middle of the pack earner from S46, and as such has one more season before regression. If Chicago keeps their tactics the same this season, Kennedy and Smeb will easily be the best top pairing in terms of offensive output, even if their TPE levels just aren’t quite high enough to touch the top pair in our rankings.

1.  Alexander Selich and Cassius Darrow, Buffalo Stampede  Stampede

TPE: 2013* (Selich) || 2066* (Darrow)

S54 Stats: 15G, 29A, 44P, +40 (Selich) || 9G, 34A, 43P, +36 (Darrow)

And here we have it: the best top line pairing in the league. Selich and Darrow are two of the 3 highest TPE earners of the S45 class and both broke into the 2K TPE club before regression. The regression will knock them down a little, but it shouldn’t be anything enough to knock them out of the top spot here. Selich and Darrow registered 44 and 43 points respectively – top 6 numbers among defenders ranked in this article. Both benefited from playing for the powerhouse that is Buffalo – but then again, they are both keys to that powerhouse being a thing. Selich and Darrow ran over opponents possession wise, and there is no reason to think they won’t do so again in S55. Look out for the duo as they will surely have excellent seasons once again.

*Indicates player is in regression and that TPE levels to start the season will be 100-200 TPE lower than shown

And that is all! The last part of my article will be published tomorrow when we rank teams goalies for S55!
