Difficult to find a more even game than this one. When the game couldn't be decided in three regular periods of hockey, it was taken to overtime. In the end, both teams had the same amount of shots on goals, hits, and blocked shots. What made the difference in the first overtime period was Konstantin Kostoyevskiy's first of the season.

Let's have a look at what happened by focusing on the highlights of every period.

Period 1

Neither goalie flinched in the first period, despite some interesting plays, especially from the Prince George Firebirds who fired 7 shots on Freddie La Flame. The Raiders' goalie showed he was ready for his second start of the season by allowing no rebound on all the shots he faced.

Halifax could've done some damage on their powerplay, as the Firebirds took three penalties, including in a double minor in this opening period but Prince George is the team that seemed to control the match early on and without La Flame's stellar play, the score could've been very different.

Period 2

Iam Essellemm didn't waste any time putting his team on the scoreboard. He scored his first of the season 22 seconds into the period after benefiting from an interception by his teammate Cloud McCarthy in the neutral zone. The Firebirds tried sending their big guns on the ice to even the game right away but the Raiders didn't allow them to take a single shot. Instead, a little over a minute after the Raiders' first goal, Conor McGregor also scored his first in the SMJHL on another interception, this time by Ensio Kalju.

The Firebirds finally found the back of the net halfway through the period with Arthur Dayne's first of the season. The Raiders allowed the Firebirds to settle their offense in their zone and it cost them.

After some minutes of intense hockey from both teams, none other than the best scorer in the SMJHL Paddy Kane-Rielly scored his first of the season after yet another interception but this time by his teammate Mikhail Lokitonov.

Both teams were suffering from a poor passing game and whoever would be the one to correct it could run away with the win.

Period 3

The period started with a penalty to Ensio Kalju that could've proven costly for his team. The Firebirds didn't waste any time bombarding La Flame's net. On his second shot of the powerplay, a mere four seconds in, Mikhail Lokitonov could've given his team the lead for the first time in the game. Unfortunately, his shot hit the post next to La Flame.

The Firebirds had the momentum after the penalty and kept putting pressure on the Raiders. It didn't take long before Jill Jellybeanov also scored their first of the season.

While this could've killed the Raiders' morale, the team instead changed their approach to the match. Their passes were accurate and tireing for the Firebirds. Paz Tappers scored after Aline Marquales' shot was blocked by Mikhail Petrikov. The game would have to be decided in overtime.

Overtime

While exciting at first, the period quickly changed pace with four consecutive icing calls. The last one by Niklas Mueller proved fatal to his team. Him and his teammates were unable to stop the Raiders who sealed the deal via Konstantin Kostoyevskiy's first goal of the season.

I'd just like to briefly touch on a pair of players (one from each team), that were not among the three stars for the game, but put in a good performance for their teams - fourth stars if you will. For Prince George, that player is Dallas Brash. He managed an assist, a hit, and a blocked shot in his 15 and a half minutes on the ice, while also being out there for about 4 minutes for the penalty killing unit that went 9 out of 9 on the game. Dallas was in the game at the right time, earning him a +2 rating.

A player on Halifax who actually managed to one up Brash with a +3 rating is Ensio Kalju. He did have about 20.5 minutes on the ice, but achieved great things during that time, picking up an assist, two hits, and a shot block. He was one of the only players on the Raiders with penalty minutes, but that didn't end up hurting the team, as they killed both power play opportunities.

<div align="center">Three Stars of the Game

First Star: Cloud McCarthy
At the top of the pecking order, we have Cloud McCarthy, who played a very sizeable role in the offensive production for the Halifax Raiders in this game. While McCarthy wasn’t responsible for a single goal, he did provide two primary assists in the game, one of which was the primary assist for the game winning goal in the overtime period.

The first primary assist earned by McCarthy occurred only twenty-two seconds into the second period, where McCarthy beautiful setup Raiders rookie Iam Essellemm for his very first goal of the season. This arguably was the catalyst assist of the game for the Raiders, as it gave them a 1-0 lead in the game.

One of the assists earned by McCarthy

The second primary assist was likely even more clutch, being produced nearly three minutes into the overtime period, on a goal scored by Konstantin Kostoyevskiy, also his very first goal earned during the season.

It’s McCarthy’s combined offensive playmaking and being at very clutch moments of the game that rightfully earned him the first star of the night honors.

Second Star: Kyler Gill
The second star of the game was actually earned by a player who had the same offensive box score as McCarthy, just that he came from the losing side of the game. This, however, does not mitigate the impressive production that Gill produced during the entirety of the game.

Gill was responsible for two assists during the game, one of which were a primary assist. The first assist was earned a little over halfway into the second period, on a goal scored by the Sword of the Morning, Ser Arthur Dayne, which was his first goal earned of the season. This goal cut the Raiders’ lead in half, making it a 2-1 game, and halting any further momentum the team might’ve gained in the period.

The second of Gill’s assists was earned a little over three minutes into the third period, on a goal scored by Jill Jellybeanov, which was the first goal of the season once again scored by players of this game. Gill’s primary assist here gave the Firebirds a 3-2 lead, which shows that he did everything in his power to try and help Prince George win this game. However, it was not to be, but his two assists did display an impressive offensive performance and earn him the second star of the night honors.

Third Star: Paddy Kane-Rielly
Last but certainly not least, we have Paddy Kane-Rielly, who also provided two points in his game for his team, but he actually managed to score a goal as one of his two earned points. The first earned point came a little over the halfway mark of the second period, on the aforementioned Arthur Dayne goal; Rielly earned the primary assist on the goal as well. Once again, this goal halted the 2-0 momentum the Raiders possessed and allowed the Firebirds to make a competitive game out of an early deficit.

Rielly’s second point and first goal earned during the SMJHL season occurred with a little less than four minutes remaining in the second period, where his goal allowed the Firebirds to tie the game at two a piece, making this a very clutch goal indeed.

Rielly earning his very first goal of the season.

It’s Rielly’s offensive production from both a goal scoring and playmaking standpoint, combined with his clutch performance, that earned him the third start of the night honors, though his work was certainly almost as impressive as Gill’s and McCarthy’s.

COMMENT 1 - 168

The Hallifax Raiders relied heavily on their rookies all season long, and their rookies were the reason they won this game. We're going to have some comments about them. Lets start right away in the second period. They managed to strike early with a big goal from rookie Sniper Iam Essellemm. This was Iam's first professional goal and it was an awesome one as he got the scoring off in the second period almost immediately. Cloud McCarthy got the puck and passed it to Iam Essellemmm. Iam launched a shot right above the glove hand of Prince George Goalie Tommy Tuck and scored in the upper 90. The youngster was ecstatic to score his first goal, and it was the goal that gave the Halifax Raiders a huge 1 nothing lead. The team was able to capitalize on that lead and score again (will be discussed in a bit) but without this goal from Iam the Raiders would not be able to make it to Overtime to win.

COMMENT 2 - 162

Iam Esellemm was not the only Rookie on the Raiders, and he certainly was not the only one who had an impact on the game. Connor McGregor came in to the season with high expectations. The young Irish star was taken second over all in the SMJHL entry draft by the Halifax Raiders. And in this game, the Raider's second game of the season, McGregor showed why the Halifax Raiders were correct to place so much faith in him. After Iam Essellemm scored in the second period the Raiders were up a strong 1-0. The Raiders then changed lines after the goal and after an interception Ensio Kaljiu was able to find McGregor in the slot who was able to slam a one timer in past Tommy Tuck. This goal was a mere 89 seconds after Iam Essellemm's. McGregor and the Halifax Raiders were feeling super confident after two goals by two different rookies before the period was even two minutes old.

COMMENT 3 - 189

This this comment is not going to be about a rookie, but rather about the main hero of the game. Konstantin Kostoyevskiy was the man who won the game for the Halifax Raiders. The winger scored the game winning goal in over time and gave the Raiders their first win of the season. This got every one excited in Halifax both for their future and the future of Konstantin Kostoyevskiy in this s39 season. Now we're going to talk specifically about that goal. It was early in over time, the Firebirds were able to get a shot on goal but it was saved by Halifax goal keeper Freddie La Flame. The Raiders got on the puck and moved forward on the ice. Hans Gruber had the puck, passed it over to Cloud McCarthy . Mccarthy then launched it back to Konstantin Kostoyevskiy who was able to slot it home for the goal. The Raiders would win because of it. The first shot of over time for Halifax and it came relatively late for a shot but early for a goal within 3 minutes of the start of the period.
