Toronto, as the largest city in Canada, and one of the largest in North America, has all sorts of professional sports teams. It even has a professional rugby team! Kristian Eriksson has lived in Toronto for a long time now, and been to countless sporting events. His favorite is defintely heading to BMO Field to watch Toronto FC play. TFC is coming up perhaps the greatest season in MLS history, and are led by stars such as Sebastian Giovinco, Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley. Wathcing them play at BMO Field is always an exciting experience. Growing up in Malmo, where soccer and hockey were about equal in popularity, Eriksson has always been a fan of the beautiful game. Recently, Eriksson took his teammate Bob Bergen, an Englishman, to experience MLS action for the first time. While clearly a step down from the Premier League, it was still an enjoyable outing for the two.

I go see play the Minnesota Militia play, only because their team name is terrible and they should be the Impact like my old team name. I go to every game that I can (in a dinky rink in St. Paul), wearing my old Impact jersey and screaming at the GM box like a sane person, and until the team finally changes their name I will continue to do so. Some times I bring old retired teammate Griffin Simons along, and we scream together at the terribleness that the team branding is. Afterwards we always go to the nearest bar and discuss in a sane yelling tone why the fans of the team should be fans of the Impact instead. Then I give an autograph and sometimes punch someone for being drunk and stupid for being a Militia fan. Then I go to the rink and rip off a few slapshots at the Militia Logos in the rink, which I am allowed to do since I am a damn legend at that place, now.

The Jets go see the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, of course. Max was only given two tickets but the squad buys enough tickets for everyone off of a scalper outside. Canadian football may be weird (and kind of mediocre), but hey, the stadium serves beer and sometimes it’s nice to see somebody else get their clock cleaned. Max grew up in Munich, so he doesn’t have a ton of context for football, but the American and Canadian members of the team got him into it. Corey Bearss and Jason Visser usually spend their time heckling both teams, while the Europeans like Max, Pietra, Evans, Hef, and Cormier-Hale tend to get caught up in some sort of drinking contest. Only Gary Grease is usually all that invested in the game, but he’s from Winnipeg. Too bad the stadium makes him sit in the back row, due to his 7-foot-plus frame. The others don’t mind too much, as they’re that much closer to the beer stands. Investors Group Field is reasonably new, and while the team hasn’t won the Grey Cup since 1990, it’s a good time. Overall, Max likes the sport because of the athleticism, the speed, and the strategy. There’s a lot more going on with 11 guys than with 6, though Max doesn’t really enjoy how specialized each player is- hockey requires a lot more versatility in skill set.
