'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the SMJHL,
Not a player was resting, not even those trapped in free agency hell,
The rookies were pumped, learning all the vets could teach,
In hopes that SHL glory would soon be in reach,
Management was nestled at the bar all having a drink,
"Did I make the right draft choice, or did I overthnink?",
The St. Louis Scarecrows, celebrating with their cup,
Will they repeat next year? Who else will step up?,
Out from the ether to join the league as a foe,
The Outlaws from Anaheim with a a Lion in tow,
Away flew old team members, due to the expansion draft,
Two teams of new faces, all honing their craft.
Will they arrive next year with great clamor?,
Could they win the cup and live the life of glamour?,
What could that be descending from the heavens,
Why it is number 1 overall pick Nikolai Evans,
What a strong young defender so lively and quick,
Able to score with barely a wrist flick.
More rapid than eagles other picks come fallin',
From Detroit skate Zvejnieks, Gomez, and Kyllonen.
"Now, from Halifax, come Javi and Matsson,
right behind them skate Bitties, Paradise, and Karlsson.
All the coaches yell the championship is ours to take,
If we don't win that cup it is gonna be non-stop bag skates.
As the kids enter training camp,
They all have their visions of lighting the lamp.
And seeing their jersey to the rafters go flying,
Motivated by visions of their parents proudly crying,
Will all their years of hard work finally pay off,
Will the fans cheer them or simply scoff?
As the season draws closer, my anticipation grows great,
What players will they love and which will they hate.
Will these new players puck touches cause fans to go hush,
Or will they flame out like another Garrett Rush?
Some goalies again will have to carry their teams on their backs,
While other teams' snipers look to find even the smallest cracks.
The fans - their eyes wide - hope their team avoids any funk,
But even if they suck at least they can get drunk.
Three goals for a lad and their hats they will throw,
Get shutout and rocked and the boos will surely grow.
The clang of a pipe will ring loud in the barn,
And the old heads will all be spinning a yarn
About the good ole days when there was just one celly
Their moth eaten sweaters barely containing the owner's belly.
Who should starting and who put on a shelf,
I can not possibly say but I hope it is not myself;
May my passes stay true and all the hits miss my head,
I'll never forget what once was said,
Go in every day, put in your time, do your work,
Your team is your family, yes even that jerk,
Some will be dashing and some will be all nose,
You need to defend them so be on your toes,
Always skate hard and play til the whistle.
Do this and you bellies will be full of steak, never gristle.
So with that everyone, a merry Christmas to all,
And from Detroit, as one voice, we say "Screw Montreal"
