The SHL Season 46 draft is all wrapped up and the Buffalo Stampede have come away with a haul of good looking youngsters. GM @WannabeFinn seems to have stocked up on centers and defenseman this time around, and with their top picks putting up top points in the SMJHL, this draft might be one to remember for the Stampede. Without further ado here are the draftees:

SHL S46 Buffalo Stampede Draft:

C - Monkey D. Luffy @TnlAstatine
D - Kalevi Karhunen @Lynxfire
C - Bobby Sharp @Nerio
C - Kristoffer Svensson @gillon
C - Raino Kyllonen @CKT
D - Johnny Sins @LonnyBohonos16
D - Eric Vanderberg @Vandy
G - Yuri Ushakov @BRayne

Now let’s talk about our draftees in a bit more detail, starting in reverse pick-order with our only goalie prospect, Yuri Ushakov.

Yuri Ushakov - Goalie - Colorado Raptors
S45 SMJHL - 0.882 Save Percentage, 2.92 GA

Yuri hails from the large country of Latvia, home of widest waterfall in Europe (Ventas Rumba). Perhaps this waterfall is his inspiration for his wide butterfly style that lets him block off the lower corners of the net. His skating could use a bit of help but he uses his quick reactions and rebound control to bail his defense out of trouble time and time again. Yuri doesn’t speak much, you can hardly find any quotes about him in the media, but he may come from a bit of family money. You know those wealthy families always drill it into their kids to stay off Instagram. Hopefully his financial support system won’t make him complacent.

Eric Vanderberg - Defenseman - Colorado Raptors
S45 SMJHL - 2 Goals, 14 Assists, +2 +/-

Next up is Eric Vanderberg. Vanderberg is a two-way hard nosed defenseman from the USA who likes to grind out games and shoot pucks on net. He isn’t a big hitter, but he’s good on the boards and you can’t wear him out with the long minutes. In fact, growing up he used to feel bad about hitting other kids. "I remember when we first took him down to try out for the Hawks, the first time he laid a hit on a kid, he felt so bad he skated over and helped him up." Eric's father Charles said when asked about Eric. "He was a big kid then, he's even bigger now, not so much helping people up these days."

Eric also grew up playing many different sports like football and soccer and strives to be a balance athlete rather than just a skilled puck handler. His favorite player growing up? “I always had a soft spot for Alexander Mogilny growing up, he was my favorite player as a kid and he wore 89.” Eric said when asked. “So when I got to mite hockey, it was the number I knew I wanted. So I wear it in tribute to him.”

Johnny Sins - Defenseman - Anchorage Armada
S45 SMJHL - 2 Goals, 12 Assists, +20 +/- (best +/- in the SMJHL)

Johnny Sins, no, not the Johnny Sins you’re thinking of, does a pretty good job living up to his namesake. As Pierre Mcguire said “(Sins) is a player with a really long stick and is able to use it to his advantage especially in tight situations.” Sinns is a bomb clapping offensive defenseman who likes to shoot hard and often into tight situations. Sinns hails from Ireland, and we can only assume his parents had a hard-on for the infamous real-life Johnny Sins, or were entirely ignorant when picking his name.

While Ireland is no tropical paradise, Johnny had a rough transition to the cold and dark of Anchorage, Alaska. “The whole time I was under the impression that I had to hunt my own food up there. So along with training for hockey, I trained with Bear Grylls so he could help me hunt my own food. The problem though is we spent the whole time drinking our own piss, it was awful.” Sins told the media after this SMJHL draft day. Sins felt a major sense of joy when he discovered he could buy his food at grocery stores “I was so relieved when I found out I could just go to the store to buy Gatorade instead of drinking my own piss.” When asked about his new home in Buffalo, Sins simply stated “I just choose to drink my own piss now.”

But don’t let his jovial facade fool you, Sins is dead serious when it comes to playing hockey. Speaking of his season at the Armada, Sins said “The team worked their ass off last season to get the results that they achieved and they expect all of us new players to put in a similar effort this year to build on those results. I am going to take time off of filming videos to ensure that I am laying the body instead of laying the pipe. I think the added pressure to perform can really help players as it forces them to essentially bring their A game every night.” Johnny played together with Kalevi Karhunen, another Buffalo draft pick in the S46 draft, and together they were tied for best and 2nd best +/- in the entire SMJHL. Future’s looking bright for this Buffalo prospect, may he one day be a bigger star than his namesake.

Raino Kyllonen - Center - Detroit Falcons
S45 SMJHL - 11 Goals, 21 Assists

Raino is the first of two Finnish draftees by the Buffalo Stampede. This 6’2” set-up man has a balanced tool-set at his disposal. His tough upbringing in the semi-socialist utopia of Finland has given him a love of hip-hop, and he seems to have started a rap battle with fellow draftee and first Buffalo pick Monkey D. Luffy. Let’s listen in to this magnificent piece of art:

"It's the Kylla, definition OG elite playmaker,
Approach me like you hard, motherfucker I'mma hit ya split ya,
with my fucking stick, if I have ta’
Monkey D. Luffy, you’re a fuckin’ actor
Prankster, media skater, busta,
But this time you're dealing with some real motherfuckin’
C's, sucka please, don't try to step
Because if you do, then your Kraken is all that would be left
See, young skaters like me might end your career,
Claiming my team, but, D, you don’t belong here
Players like you all is what I call a wannabe (No Finn)
And ain't shit compared to real motherfuckin' C's"

That’s right Monkey, you ain’t shit compared to this real motherfucking C. Words to live by… words to live by.

But for performance, you can’t beat a kid who tied for the rookie lead in scoring in the SMJHL last season. He even beat out Monkey D. Luffy, the first pick of the Buffalo Stampede, by a single point in the season scoring race. This guy knows how to set his wingmen up for goals as he finished with 21 assists.

Kristoffer Svensson - C- Montreal Militia
S45 SMJHL - 5 Goals, 5 Assists

Kristoffer is another strong center prospect out of the SMJHL. Born in Sweden, he skated for the Montreal Militia during the S45 SMJHL season. The Militia had a good seasoned core last season and Kristoffer didn’t see much playing time in the top lines or the powerplay, but based on what we’ve seen from his skills he should be a great player going forward. Based on his scouting report, “Svensson's game is based strongly around seeing plays before they happen, and leveraging that advantage. This is almost a bit of a requirement as the Swede isn't the fastest guy out there, and he makes up for it with his hockey sense. He would correctly be categorized as a pass-first player, but he has both the hands and the shot to mix up his offense should he choose to utilize them more.”

When asked about the draft, Kristoffer said: "Prior to the draft, I had quite a few GMs reaching out to me, and from what I was hearing through the grapevine it looked like I'd be going in the 2nd round. I wasn't too surprised as it matched up pretty well with my draft placement in the SMJHL draft at 25th OA. Out of the teams I talked to Buffalo was one of the ones that I had the most discussions with, and I really felt like we were on the same page. Looking at the outcome, I'd say that it's safe to say I was right about that. Couldn't be happier about where I ended up, and I'm hoping to bring my skillset to the Stampede whenever they feel I'm needed."

Bobby Sharp - Center - Kelowna Knights
S45 SMJHL - 10 Goals, 17 Assists

With Bobby Sharp the Buffalo Stampede grabbed their second rated center. With 27 points in his rookie SMJHL season, Bobby made sure to grab the attention of SHL GMs. Hailing from the United States, Bobby is a great skater with a soft touch on the pass, but doesn’t shoot much unless the net is wide open. From his Instagram postings and Tinder accounts, Bobby might be bit of a party animal,

but as long as he can hold his liquor on game days ain’t nobody judging. However, Bobby might have to watch what he posts on his social media in the future as being a Buffalo draftee, posting Meme’s about now defunct Buffalo franchises isn’t going to win over the fans:

Kalevi Karhunen - Defenseman - Anchorage Armada
S45 SMJHL - 6 Goals, 18 Assists, +18 +/-

Kalevi was Buffalo’s 2nd pick in the draft and is a fast puck moving defenseman who likes to stretch the ice on both sides of the rink. He is originally from Finland but grew up in California and has a bit of a hybrid style with the grinding play of Finnish defenseman and the fast skating of California roller hockey rinks. “I bring a little bit of both... " Kalevi said (during SMJHL draft) when asked about his double upbringing. "I like to think I pull together my Finnish grit, sisu and love of hockey with the skating and flow of California. I was born in Finland but my parents moved to the Bay Area when I was a little kid. Most of my childhood was spent with self-styled puck daddies of roller hockey rinks."r]

He had a solid season in the SMJHL putting up 24 points without any power play time. That puts him in 2nd amongst rookies for even strenght points and his +18 was good for 2nd (tied) in the entire SMJHL. He and linemate Johnny Sins held down the 2nd pairing of the Armada all season long. The post-season wasn’t a great success for the team but Kalevi managed to hold down a respectable ~.5 points per game average through the regular and postseason. Kalevi says he’s “stoked to go to Buffalo, I love the snow but Anchorage was a little too much. Buffalo’s got a great location between New York and Toronto so you’re not stuck out in the woods every day. Plus they’ve got some good players and a great team building out there.”

Monkey D. Luffy - Center - Lethbridge Lions
S45 SMJHL - 15 goals, 16 assists

Monkey D. Luffy, when asked about his fellow draftees, simply stated “"i still don't know who the fuck this Karhunen guy" in broken English. That, when combined with the fact his current holdout is due to a mistaken belief he was being signed for ‘Three Billion Dollars (or TBD)’, we’re crossing our fingers and hoping for the best for Monkey’s future.

POST ARTICLE EDIT: A new development since posting our article, Monkey D. Luffy has managed to sign a $1 million dollar contract with the Buffalo Stampede. Buffalo's first prospect has negotiated himself to be the lowest paid of the new prospects. Sometimes we wonder how such a skilled and hard working center can make such strange decisions, but I hope Monkey's 'all in' spirit will sustain him while he dines on Ramen while living in his mom's closet.

Team Reactions:

Longtime fan favorite Buffalo defender Charles Walker (@Zombiewolf) gave his opinion on the draft before stepping onto practice. “We got a bunch of weirdos this time. I mean they’re good hockey players, but guys like Monkey, Bobby, Johnny @#$!@ Sins? Ain’t worried about my job anytime soon…”
Buffalo defender Quick Mafs @Rindiee piped in when walking by “Can I make a comment?! None of you fucking pussy ass shitters are as good as me!”.

"Bring back Pingy Pingu Lunga Gumba esq. And I mean bring him all the way back. I want every thread on this forum that involves even a modicum of salt to get razed to the ground by our most notorious shitposting penguin. I want every thunderdome to drown in ABAGABA spam and a signature that doesn't end. I want the userbase of this fine league to cower in terror, slinking about the forums and making as little noise as possible for fear of attracting the Shitpost Slenderman. When some poor immigrant from the NFL sim blunders into the forum and makes an angry post about how his player slipped to the early second round despite having done ALL the rookie tasks(!), let the veteran survivalists stare in horror and pity while the newbie rages. They will know it is only a matter of time before @Pingy Pingu descends upon his post like a ravening wolf and obliterates his tread, reducing it to a radioactive waste-dump of unintelligible spam. They will not interfere, for Pingy is our immune system. Because he can take it. Our Dark Knight of Shitposting"
