Brief Synopsis

Despite any early lack of shots and a strong first period showing from the Vancouver Whalers. The Prince George Firebirds showed their strength with three third period goals to take this important win in the Western Conference between one of their bitter rivals.

Game Summary

Prince George has struggled mightily this season. They are the definition of a team that plays two-faced hockey. The Firebirds seem to struggle from a confidence problem when more than one goal is scored on them in the game. Star goaltender Ben Waters has kept the Firebirds in games that they may not have had a chance otherwise. The team wavers between shutting teams out or getting blown out themselves. What this may say is that the team may not be ready to take the ice some nights. Could that be a coaching problem or just a confidence problem? The rest of the season will tell the story. Coming into this game the Firebirds are looking to steal some momentum away from the West Leading Whalers. The Whalers on the other hand seem to struggle with a much different problem. They have had trouble producing goals like the rest of the Western Conference up to this point. While their defense has held fast and the goaltending of Maximilian Wehner has been near the top of the league. Many of their losses have come due to an inability to produce on the offensive end. Losing many of their games in 2-1 and 1-0 fashion. Tonight we saw another offensive letdown from the Vancouver Whalers, as their goaltender could not match all the shots flying his way and the offense could not put any pucks in the net.

Vancouver came out strong in the first period. Outshooting the Firebirds by a total of 11 to 5. The Whalers looked hungry in the first period and netted a goal before the 10 minute mark. All signs were leaning towards a solid game for Vancouver. Offensive dynamo Conklin Owen lifted a puck over the right shoulder of Ben Waters and everything seemed to be going well for the Whalers. We saw clean hockey this period. No penalties were taken and the time just flew off the clock.

The 2nd period looked a lot more like the terrible Whalers that we have seen much of the season. Being outshot 11 to 6 by the Firebirds. The Vancouver offense looked lethargic and Prince George was flying around the ice. Especially forward Eduard Selich and rookie defender Noctis Caelum. The solid goaltending of Maximilian Wehner held the score to 1-0 for the Whalers. This were looking alright for Vancouver at this time but things would change next period.

Prince George came out of the locker room flying int he 3rd period. With an early penalty on Vancouver defenseman Ludwig Koch Schroder, Prince George was able to capitalize within the first two minutes on a Power Play goal by second year forward Sven Wolf. Later in the 3rd on a great passing play from Eduard Selich, forward Frederick Boone was able to take the puck and slip it low on the towering Wehner. Things were looking bad for Vancouver now as they were being outshot extremely heavily at this point. The continued pressure from Price George awarded them a powerplay when Vancouver forward Ieuan Llewellyn slashed a Firebirds player. The Firebirds took no time to fire the puck behind Wehner for a 2nd power play goal of the game. Extending their lead and shutting the door on Vancouver.
