Tonight's rookie of the game goes to the Anchorage Armada's 7th Overall Pick: Mika Mayfield. Playing the majority of the game on the Armada's 2nd line at the left wing position, Mayfield was responsible for the Armada's second goal of the game, and played a total of 17:15, a majority of those minutes being played on the Armada's powerplay. Throughout the game, Mayfield showed great hustle and both an offensive and defensive prowess, becoming a solid two-way threat for the Armada's forward core throughout the game. Harrington's Thoughts - Armada Come Out on an Undisciplined Win

While the Armada were extremely skilled and deadly against a fairly unprepared Vancouver Whalers team, an unacceptable portion of the Armada's game was their discipline. In just their first game of the season, the Armada took a total of five penalties. If they were going up against a much more offensively potent team, the game would have gone much more differently. Five penalties are unacceptable, especially for a team like the Armada who have their eyes on the playoffs and enormous Four Star cup aspirations. If the Armada want a successful season, what needs to happen is that they need to play a much more disciplined game in order to minimize the amount of scoring chances against.

Cruisin' For a Bruisin' - Benois Minuscule - Defense - Vancouver Whalers

The steady and constant presence of Benois Minuscule was welcomed by the Vancouver Whalers. The 6'6", 221 pound Latvian defenseman led the game in hits with 4. Thanks to his stature and intensity, Minuscule was a defensive and physical specimen for the Whalers' this evening as he was able to both crush and shutdown his opponents all game long. Despite going pointless, and having a -1 rating, Minuscule was a powerplay workhorse for the Whalers this evening, with 3:45 of his 21:59 total minutes played being on the Whalers' powerplay. Regardless of his individual points (or lack of), Minuscule was a great veteran presence for the Whalers this evening.
