Double Media pay Week

The SMJHL S45 entry Draft has come and gone. The last Few days have been a total rush for GMs as the final Influx of player applications has been pushed through. Now over 150 Players in this draft ( a number not seen in a long time) has pushed the league to expand by 2 teams brining back The Anaheim Outlaws and the Lethbridge Lions, 2 defunct teams that now make a return to the Junior ranks.

In a quick round by round over view.

ROUND 1

1.
Montreal Militia  Militia  - Nikolai Evans.

The Militia have finally gotten their man. After 3 seasons of seeking an Offensive D man, the Montreal Militia went all out taking the son of 2 SHL legends. The offensive defensemen with huge upside, Montreal went against what every analysts pick. A gutsy move but a worthwhile one.  An elite talent who is sure to leave a mark on the league from the get go.

2.
Kelowna Knights  Knights - Karlstraße Scholz

Another Offensive defenseman off the board two picks in. Kelowna starts the rebuild with another solid offensive defensemen. A can’t go wrong pick, Scholz will quarterback this team well for the near future.

3.
Anchorage Armada  (Via Halifax Raiders)  Armada - Olivier Cloutier

Anchorage Picks up a very solid RW to help their Offense continue to grow. Cloutier is a high potential Forward that can quickly become elite. The Armada just became a little more Dangerous.

4.
Detroit Falcons  (Via Anchorage Armada  Via Halifax Raiders)  Falcons - Kalvins Zvejnieks

Detroit Picked up a big Power Forward Centerman. The 6 foot 4 Latvian is one of the best Faceoff men in the draft. A solid skater with smart positioning reflexes, Detroit picked up a great asset to their team.

5.
Colorado Raptors (Via Vancouver Whalers)  Raptors - Anastasia O'Koivu

Last Minute approval, O’Koivu just made it into the draft and Colorado could not be happier. The defensive Defenseman comes with high expectations and the Russian Hockey Federation speaks highly of this player. A strong, Physical Defensman, Colorado may have just picked the next intimidating D man in the league.

6.
St. Louis Scarecrows (Via Detroit Falcons  Via Halifax Raiders)  Scarecrows - Tyler Tougard

Highly sought after Swedish Sniper, Tougard brings the offensive game to St.Louis. A strong skater with a wicked shot and strain Positional skills, this Swedish meatball is a threat every time he’s on the ice.

7.
Vancouver Whalers (Via Colorado Raptors)  Whalers - Paulie Tracotanza

The biggest Shock of the Night. The highly touted 1 Overall pick fell to 7 Overall. The why is not really Known but Vancouver scored big with this pick. The elite of this class makes his way to an already strong Vancouver team possibly making them early favourites for the 4 star cup.

8.
Halifax Raiders (Via St. Louis Scarecrows)  raiders - Jimmy Slothface

Another Sniper in the Draft, the Finnish star with exceptional skating and great finishing skills makes his way to Halifax. Overall a solid skill set, positioning seems to be the weak point with this player. Lucky he has lots of time to work on it and make himself an even bigger threat.

9.
Lethbridge Lions  Lions - Eva Lykke Aparjode

The first of the Expansion teams picks it’s first entry draft pick, with that pick they take an Offensive Latvian forward. A solid Skater, with sold puck handling Skill, good passing hands and a finisher with the puck. There is a lot to like about this pick.

10.
Anaheim Outlaws  Outlaws - Jerry Mander

The other expansion team got their first pick of it’s first entry draft picking a Russian right winger. The 5 foot 10 inch power forward brings a hard hitting game to the league. Overall a solid skillset, the one weakness he may want to work on is Passing, but there is still some time to work on that.

ROUND 2

11.
Montreal Militia  (Via Kelowna Knights)  Militia - Hans Zucker

The Militia acquired this 11 Overall pick about a half hour before the draft so they could get a chance to pick Hans Zucker. A lot of promise in this player as the offensive right winger from Belgium will make his way to Montreal. A strong skater  with solid passing and puck handling skills this forward can also score goals when he’s in the spot. Getting to the position however is something he will need to work on.

12.
Montreal Militia  (Via Halifax Raiders)  Militia - Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova

12 Overall, the Montreal Militia Selected a Goalie, and a good one at that. With the future of Vrana somewhat up in the air, not knowing whether he is going to get called up or not, the Militia took the chance and drafted a Russian hybrid goalie. The 6 foot 4, 225 pound man has a ton of upside to him. Style control and Hand speed are already above that of an average starter, his reaction time is solid and rebound control as well. Strong agility but still needs work. The biggest thing out his game is his skating which will need a lot of work, but is still not a glaring concern.

13.
Anchorage Armada    Armada - Johnny Sins

The Armada and Johnny Sins. Anchorage wasted no time adding to their already solid Defensive corps by adding Irishman Johnny sins. Another Offensive D man will be added to a team that already boasts Lockheart. Sins overall game is solid but his passing stands out above the rest. A solid skater, this D man has some serious potential, and a balanced skillset.

14.
Colorado Raptors  Raptors - Michael Scarn

Colorado made sure they replaced a Keegan Angello which they lost in the Expansion draft to Anaheim by selecting Michael Scan. The Czech born Centre is known as a sniper. A good skater with strong positional skills and a great shot, for a centreman he will need to work on his face-offs.

15.
Kelowna Knights (Via Montreal Militia )  Knights - Guy Zheng

Another Offensive D man in this draft. Kelowna picked their second in 2 rounds so far. U.K born, Zheng has a solid shot and great passing skills. His Positioning needs some work but he’s not far off, the Kelowna Rebuild is off to a strong start.

16.
Colorado Raptors (Via Vancouver Whalers)  Raptors - Eric Vangerberg

Colorados second pick of the second round, they pick American two-way defenseman Vanderberg. The big thing about him is that he is a balanced player. A strong skater with a balanced skillset among passing and shooting. A solid puck mover for sure.

17.
Halifax Raiders (Via St. Louis Scarecrows Via Anchorage Armada )  raiders - Perry Morgan

Morgan describes himself as an Offensive D man. The reality is he loves to hit. A solid Puck handler with good passing skills. It’ll be interesting to see how he develops on both sides of the puck.

18.
Detroit Falcons   Falcons - Raino Kyllönen

Detroit added another Centre to their Lineup, The Finnish Centreman is a solid playmaker. Great passing skill, and a strong positional player. An overall solid skillset with huge upside.

19.
Lethbridge Lions  Lions - Brennan Kennedy Jr.

Kennedy Jr can skate, and skate, and skate. The endurance on this guy is impressive. Oh and he can Skate well too. A solid passer, this offensive minded D man is a great puck moving o
ption. Now to develop him into a star caliber D man.

20.
Anaheim Outlaws  Outlaws - Collin Gibbles

Gibbles is a solid pick at 20. Very balanced player in his skillset with nothing really standing out. He’s a strong player who skates well and can pass while handling the puck well and being positionally sound.

Cheers for the write up, can't agree more.  I can't wait to get on the ice and show Halifax they were right to take me this high.

Nice writeup! With such a deep draft, it'll be interesting to see if these 20 players are who stand out by season's end. Smile
