S54 WFT #2 - Family Rivalry

Will Windsor was an only child, but he grew up in a very hockey-centric environment as the son of Winston Windsor. Growing up in Edmonton, he became a fan of the Blizzard and remained such even after his father relocated to Texas. As the son of a journeyman SHL player, there was always a fair amount of pressure on Will to succeed at the highest levels -- and that supposed promise often came as a source of stress. He never had his father's offensive instincts, yet that reputation sometimes bled over to him, leaving coaches and peers a touch confused if not entirely disappointed when they got someone completely different. Still, being an only child meant that he never had to compete with siblings, something he is privately grateful for: being the lesser brother wouldn't have been a fun experience.

Dom Montgomery has a sister named Jess and they're very close. Even though Jess has never gotten into hockey, she's a big fan of traveling, so she loves going to Dom's tournaments outside of the U.S. especially. She even sometimes gets a friend to fly out with her for a Pride game not in San Francisco as an excuse to explore different U.S. and Canadian cities. Dom and Jess are fond of saying that each other is their parents' favorite, but they're really each other's favorite.

Bohne Jr doesn't have any siblings. His father was a deadbeat who left the family once he stepped down as the Co of Minnesota. No one's heard from him since. As such, Bohne Jr has become a member of the Big Brother Big Sister organization.

I'm going to give the Aittokallio family the nod for the best group over SHL history. All of their players have been successful and their player agent has been one of the mainstays of the SHL, normally filling a prominent role somewhere in the league. They may not lead in accolade wins but overall wise, they're my vote.

Ryan Shepard is an only child, but has been focused on hockey from a very young age. He's able to make friends quickly with his teammates and they become his family. He's thought about what it could be like to have a sibling, although being an only child isn't something he can change.

Henrik Lekberg Osterman has two younger siblings. One brother and one sister. His younger brother played hockey and floorball, but quickly grew tired of the former. They still pay floorball whenever Henrik is in town. His sister plays handball and does a fair bit of riding. They never really had much of a rivalry but rather enjoyed spending some time with each other.

Toner has an older brother who does not play hockey, but they both played other sports such as hurling and soccer as kids and were very competitive. They now co-own a brewery back in Killarney together where Jon returns in the summer time.

Martijn was an only child growing up. Martijn's parents wanted more children but Martijn said no - siblings would only distract him from his goal of being #1 player. His parents argued that he could play mini sticks and practice with siblings. Martijn said no - he taped his dad to the wall and fired pucks at him.

I guess there's nothing else to say than that the McZerhl Family is the most decorated one in SHL history. Sure other families have lot's of awards too, but nowhere near the McZerhls.

Sven is the older brother in a family with two sons. His younger brother, Erik, is barely two years younger. Their relationship growing up was, of course, riddled with pranks and mischief. Both against one another but more often than not they grouped up against their parents or friends.

There was always a fair amount of competition between the two. They both played hockey growing up, but also soccer. Erik picked up a third sport in handball as well. With the age difference they never played on the same team, but they played in the same organizations for most of their sport lives. So they shared a lot of car rides to and from the sport arenas, having to watch each others practices and games. They pretty much became each other personal cheerleaders after a while.

Erik was the more athletic of the two growing up, playing three different sports for a long time. Sven on the other hand gave up soccer at a young-ish age to focus on hockey. Sven was always the better hockey player between the two. Playing with an age group above his own and collecting "Player of the game" awards left and right.

When Sven started getting noticed by coaches from different schools, Erik started to become a little jealous. Erik had moved on to become more interested in the theoretical side of sports, and he was also doing really good for himself in school. But when they were younger they both wanted to become professional players in their respective sports. And it seemed like Sven was gonna be able to do just that if he kept things up.

But going further back in time again, it was actually Sven that looked up to his younger brother most of the time. Erik had a real easy time in school and with making friends. And with the girls. Sven was more on the, I would not say quiet side, but he was definitely less of an extrovert and did not have the same amount of charm compared to Erik. It might have been because Sven put most of his energy into hockey. But he started to notice that he was missing out on certain social events.

Luckily though, and thanks to the brothers being good friends, Erik shared some tips and tricks for most of the mentioned aspects of life. He was definitely a good mentor even at a young age which is most likely why he later became a soccer goalie coach.

To sum it up somewhat. Both brothers respected each other but were also a little jealous of each other from time to time. They had their own personal shortcomings but when they were together they formed a dream team.

They were and still are close friends, but with Sven's move to Vancouver after joining the Vancouver Whalers SMJHL team they have not been able to meet up as much unfortunately. Especially since Erik stayed in Sweden to continue working as a coach for a local professional team. Luckily Sven was able to get his brother and parents tickets to his first game in Vancouver, and he is hoping to be able to do the same for his first game in the SHL.

Past Players

There have been many great SHL families who have dominated the highest level of hockey throughout SHL history. However, there can only be one best family duo. While I am definitely bias I have to go with the Scherbluks as the best family duo to ever play in the SHL. While they did not win the most cups, the most awards or have the greatest longevity as other SHL family’s with only two members of the family making it to the SHL, they were arguably one of the most dominant family for a span of fifteen seasons during their prime years.

Starting off with the better of the two brothers Darian, a franchise first line defenseman had four point per game seasons as a defenseman which is absolutely incredible. Darian also put up nine forty plus point seasons and retired as the all time leading points scorer amongst defenseman in season twenty nine with seven hundred and fifty three points (having more than one hundred points then the next defenseman on the list). At the time Darian also retired at with the second most blocked shots in SHL history only behind Brendan Cant with one thousand one hundred and ninety six blocked shots. At the end of his career, Darian additionally had the record for the most Steven Trophy awards (for the best defenseman in the SHL in a given season) given to one player during their career with four. While many of Darian’s records have been broken in the last twenty five seasons since announcing his retirement, he had changed the SHL forever with his play and was hands down the best defenseman during his time in the SHL.

While Yousuf was never the flashiest player in the SHL, he consistently put up great point totals season after season having one sixty six point season, three fifty point seasons, and eight forty point seasons over his eight season career. He was a perineal all star getting many nods to represent his team and was a first line franchise center for most of his career. Yousuf also had multiple hundred hit seasons and was never afraid to lay out the body and play a strong two way game as a forward. In the end Yousuf finished with a career of an incredible total of seven hundred and fifty one points (two less points than his brother) and a whopping one thousand four hundred and seven five hits. Yousuf was also a two time Aidan Richan Nominee for the most improve player in a given season.

Both brothers would go on to be first ballot hall of famers and spent most of their careers playing together for the Toronto North Stars. The only knock against this family is that both Scherbluk brothers were not able to win a Challenge Cup like other great SHL families such as the Aittokallio, McZerhl, and Wong families that have each won six cups respectively. However the rest of the on ice stats don’t lie that they were the most dominant brother duo during their time in the SHL.

I really don't know how anyone could beat the McZerhl Family at this point. There are a couple good familys out there that has had success but the McZ accomplishments really speaks for themselves.

I think the McZerhl family is the greatest SHL family in history. 6 Challenge cups, 7 1st all stars and 5 Mexico nominations with 2 wins is quite the resume. Along with a plethora of other awards from a wide variety of different player archetypes it’s hard to content with that.

McZehrl family has to be the most iconic in SHL history. Daddy Chris stands behind of the young lads and calls the shots, pulls the strings. VLAD was an absolute legend, but Chris is a god. Can't be anyone else.

I, poopity scoop, have no siblings. I also have no parents. I was a direct creation of the supreme Kanye West. Being a creation from Yeezus is a blessing and help me win awards.
