There are these clouds of gas that surround galaxies called the circumgalactic medium. These are long lasting, staying around galaxies for ages. Many would think they'd collapse in on themselves due to gravity, but no. They stay spread across this area because of supersonic turbulence. This can happen because space isn't a perfect vacuum. The speed of sound within these circumgalactic mediums is so low that it's not uncommon for these particles to go supersonic and generate shock-waves (like you see on a fast moving jet). These shock-waves are what keeps these particles from collapsing in on themselves.
