(x2 Draft Media) Elks Draft Review
#1

With the S61 SMJHL draft come and gone, its time to look at the picks of newly minted expansion franchise the Regina Elk.

Pick 7: Jaeger Jones - C
Current TPE: 233
Strengths: Screening 13, Checking 13, Strength 13
Weakness: Agility 10, Shot Blocking 10, Stick Checking 10

Analysis: The first ever draft pick for the Regina Elk. Jones came into this draft as a jack of all trades, but master of none. He begins his career showing strength playing in the dirty areas, and being hard to knock off the puck. He needs to improve his agility to really help his other skills shine through.

Pick 23: Yannick Svboda - W
Current TPE: 174
Strengths: Passing 13, Checking 12, Speed 12
Weakness: Balance 6, Hitting 7, Strength 10

Analysis: At pick 23 The Elks grabbed Yannik Svboda. The speedy right winger has showcased some soft hands and playmaking skills, making him a highly regarded player coming into this draft. The young Svboda should be fighting for time on the Elks third line this coming season.

Pick 25: Rebecca Montagne - G
Current TPE: 216
Strengths: Positioning 14, Reflexes 14, rebound 13
Weakness: Pokecheck 5, Puck Handling 5, Low shots 10

Analysis: At pick 25 The Elks grabbed their goalie of the future Rebecca Montagne. Showcasing some solid positioning and lightning quick reflexes, Montagne has all the tools to be the #1 stopper sooner rather than later. She looks to lock up that number one spot at the start of training camp.

Pick 37: Titanus Monsura - D
Current TPE: 178
Strengths: Stamina 13, Puck Handling 12, Positioning 12
Weakness: Screening 8, Speed 10, Acceleration 10

Analysis: Titanus Monsura is a player that showcases some dazzling puck handling skills, is always in position and has a high energy motor. He has all the skills to be a fan favorite defender in the coming seasons for Regina, and cause some major havoc on the powerplay.

Pick 50: Gordie Goodenough - C
Current TPE: 174
Strengths: Faceoffs 13, Offensive Read 13, Defensive Read 13
Weakness: Screening 5, Getting Open 7, Shooting Accuracy 7

Analysis: Getting into the later rounds Regina took young Gordie Goodenough at the first of back to back picks with number fifty. One of the better players at the dot in this draft, he has shown great awareness offensively and defensively and has the potential to challenge for a middle six position this coming season.

Pick 51: Theo Berglund - D
Current TPE: 201
Strengths: Passing 15, Getting Open 15, Stamina 12
Weakness: Shooting Accuracy 10, Puck Handling 11, Defensive Read 11

Analysis: At the second of their back to back pick Regina selected Theo Berglund. Currently at 201 TPE, he is shaping up to be a solid playmaking defenseman and possibly one of the bigger steals of the draft. An all too valuable future power play quarterback for this up and coming expansion squad.

Pick 55: Kentaro Kikuchi - W
Current TPE: 190
Strengths: Shooting Accuracy 15, Puck Handling 12, Speed 12
Weakness: Hitting 5, Passing 9, Positioning 9,

Analysis: Kikuchi is a speedy, sharp shooting left winger from Japan. With 11 goals at the prospect showcase Kentaro really put his shooting accuracy on display. He will look to solidify himself as Regina’s number one shooting option this coming season.

Pick 58: Finn McNast - D
Current TPE: 174
Strengths: Stamina 13, Stick Checking 13, Positioning 13
Weakness: Shooting Range 5, Hitting 8, Shooting Accuracy 9

Analysis: Finn Mcnast is a tough, minute munching defenseman picked at pick fifty-eight. He is rarely caught out of position and his timing with stick checks is impeccable. He will be relied upon heavily as a stable presence in the back end for this young Elks team.

Pick 74: Conner McLavish - G
Current TPE: 155
Strengths: Rebound 11, Recovery 11, Reflexes 11
Weakness: Blocker 10, Glove 10, Passing 8

Analysis: Connor McLavish is a bit of a raw goalie prospect, but shows great promise coming into this season. He has great strength in rebound control, reflexes and his ability to recover during scramble plays. He will look to challenge for the number 2 position in net this coming year.

Pick 79: Maximum Wright - W
Current TPE: 155
Strengths: Shooting Accuracy 15, Speed 13, Puck Handling 12
Weakness: Balance 5, Passing 5, Strength 5

Analysis: Quick, shifty and dead accurate. Words that describe Maximum Wright’s strengths that led to him being drafted to the SMJHL. His combination for puck skills and accurate shooting could make him one of the better right wingers that come out of this S61 draft.

All in all, what you can call a successful draft for Regina as they managed to gather plenty of young complementary pieces to begin their time in the SMJHL. Here is how their lines possibly shape up for this coming season:

Robert E. O. Speedwagon -- David Ramza -- Hail Bingus

Barry B. Benson -- Jaeger Jones -- Sam Seige

Kentaro Kikuchi -- Gordie Goodenough -- Yannik Svboda

DJ Lord -- IA Free Agent -- Tyler Wong

Josiah Hansen -- Albert Luck

Titanus Monsura --  Theo Berglund

Finn McNast -- Petyr Olindyr
