S63 Defense Prospects (DOUBLE DRAFT MEDIA)
#1

(1395 words DOUBLE DRAFT MEDIA)

SHL general managers have had their hands full the last few weeks. The holiday season is stressful enough on its own. Add on the pressures of GM tasks, drafts, and the hangover from celebrating the fact that Hamilton did not win the championship again and it all quickly combines into a Herculean task.

In an attempt to aid all you fine general managers at the last minute, here is a scouting report on all of the active defenders of the S63 draft class. I based this according to the SHL analytics listing. There were a couple players that were listed as defenders there but as forwards in the index. It is what it is. If someone is listed here that should not be or vice versa, my apologies.

Spreadsheet

San-sam Emerson
Emerson is the current leader in TPE of the S63 class. Emerson finished the season tied for third most points among S63 defenders with 30 overall. He led the defenders with 15 on the season, which was good enough for second most among all SMJHL defenders. It is no secret that Emerson is aiming to be one of the premier offensive defenders of the league. On an offensively struggling Regina team, Emerson factored in on almost 20% of their goals. There is certainly more to be desired from Emerson’s game. Given his time on ice, he should be producing more. He finished the season with a 97.3 PDO. That is not great but his relative possession numbers are top of the class. Expect his offensive production to make a jump next season.

Rolf Korhonen
Saint Louis’ Rolf Korhonen is a defense first, no nonsense kind of defender. He leads all rookie defenders in shorthanded time on ice, averaging close to two minutes per game on the penalty kill. To go along with the crucial shorthanded time, Korhonen leads the group in takeaways with 34 and is second in blocks with 113. Korhonen will best serve a team that needs a stay at home defender that is not scared of getting in the dirty areas of the ice.

Tekkeitsertok Towtoongie
Nevada Battleborn defender and name most likely to elicit a god bless you from someone in the room had a solid rookie year in the J. As of the time of writing, TT sits third in TPE in the S63 class. He put up a respectable 17 points on the season which made up about nine percent of Nevada’s offense. TT had a pretty average season and I do not mean that as an insult. While other players in the class had high highs and low lows, TT was one of the most consistent players in S62.

Drakocarr Sunazzo
Next, at 280 TPE from the Anaheim Outlaws is Drakocarr Sunazzo. Sunazzo was a workhorse for the Outlaws this season. He averaged almost 21 minutes of ice time a night with 1:44 of that being shorthanded. DS made those minutes count, too. In addition to 19 points from the back end, DS handed out the most punishment among these prospects. DS threw 139 hits in his rookie season which worked out to just over six hits per sixty minutes. Sunazzo is the kind of defender that is going to get fans hyped every game solely because of his physical play.

Rand al'Thor
Newfoundland’s Rand al’Thor is the Dragon Reborn and after his rookie campaign he deserves to be the reincarnation of Lews Therin Telamon. Rand led all rookie defenders in points with 34. He also played a ton of power play time, averaging just over two and a half minutes a night. On the flip side, He played almost no time shorthanded. Rand al’Thor has shown that he is a serious offensive threat which will draw a lot of attention from teams around the SHL.

Ergo Nomic
Carolina’s Ergo Nomic had a typical rookie season on a talented J team. Nomic was able to contribute regularly offensively with 21 points and was part of Carolina’s good puck possession numbers. Unfortunately for Nomic, they did not see a huge amount of ice time even strength or special teams. This does not speak to their effectiveness on the ice. This is just a result of being near the bottom of the depth list on a strong team. Those numbers will be way up next season.

Dexter Kirk
Dexter Kirk was the ice time leader of the class. Skating just above 21 minutes a night, with very little of that being special teams. Kirk is a 5on5 beast with all but one of his 30 points coming even strength. Kirk was also able to snag the top spot in goals per 60 with 4.1. If those numbers hold, Kirk will be electrifying the crowds in Vancouver on a regular basis.

Bilbo Baggins
From the Shire to Great Falls, Bilbo Baggins had a solid season. Baggins put up a respectable 22 points and was one of the best in terms of goals against per 60. Baggins is another defender who had a fairly level season overall. With continued good play hopefully Baggins will add another ring to his collection.

LaCarpetron Dukemarriot II
Dukemarriot is what some might call a goon. In his rookie season, he dropped the mitts eleven times. This sounds great for those old time hockey fans out there but unfortunately for LDII, he only won three of those bouts. Goon probably isn’t the best term for LDII considering his 22 points on the season in Anchorage. My only advice would be to take some MMA classes in the off season.

Warrior Enskidou
With a name like warrior it makes sense that he was undefeated in fights during S62. A perfect 1-0. Enskidou is a pass first defender. He only took 75 shots on the season and just 1 one of those found the back of the net. His 23 assists more than make up for his deficiencies shooting the puck.

Brent Ashe II
Ashe landed second in points for rookie defenders with 33. This is even more impressive given the fact that he did not get a whole lot of ice time, just over 18 minutes. In his limited ice time, Ashe was able to contribute to almost 15 percent of Great Falls’ offensive production. That speaks to great coaching and a young player making the absolute most of the ice time that they are given.

Devin Williams-II
There sure are a lot of IIs in this draft class. Williams didn’t put up dazzling offensive numbers himself but was a key part of Newfoundland’s success. His goals per 60 was an excellent 3.6 but even better, his goals against per 60 was an astounding 1.9. I am sure that these numbers will continue with increased responsibilities next season.

Chris Chelios JR
I started this before the unfortunate news of Kev411’s passing so it does not really feel right to do a deep dive on Chris Chelios JR. What I will say is CCJ was an absolute friggin beast when it came to blocking shots. He was blocking more than nine shots per sixty minutes played. Head and shoulders above the rest of the S63 defense prospects.

Rest in peace, dude.

GREY Rosey
Rosey helped Colorado generate a lot of shots in S62. Rosey themself put up 120 shots with a 4.20% shooting average (nice). Per 60, Rosey can be relied on to generate close to 38 shots. To go along with this offensive boost, Rosey also throws the body. Rosey threw 107 hits in S62. When we take into consideration their average ice time of 16:12 that makes the second most aggro player per 60 in the class with just over 6 hits per 60. Shots and checks are a recipe for a fan favorite player in the future.

Hardcastle
Hardcastle had a fairly average rookie season in Anchorage. Outside of some rough relative possession numbers, Hardcastle had an overall stable season. Some bright spots for one named wonder are a PDO of 102.7 and strong goals for and goals against per 60 at 3.3 and 2.4 respectively.

Mateo Lavoie
Lavoie had a pretty rough rookie season but in his defense it is pretty hard to put up solid numbers when you are only playing 6:43 a night. Hopefully Lavoie and have a strong bounceback sophomore season.

Let's see who my companions to imprison the Dark One will be.

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”
