(GRADED) Deep Dive #2: State of Hockey
#1
(This post was last modified: 07-29-2022, 04:07 AM by Opera_Phantom. Edited 1 time in total.)

Welcome to my 2nd deep dive. As we, the members of the SHL have enjoyed the last 12 seasons of FHM simulated hockey in one way or another. We have seen teams rise, fall, dominate, and of course, flounder. Most teams get their time in the sun with regards to their talent and how things go.
The likes of Hamilton, Buffalo, and to a lesser extent Chicago all are both praised and lambasted for their continued success in equal measure. (Though the Steelhawks get more of the negative press.)

In a similar vein, we have seen teams rise to certain types of success. The Texas Renegades have gone through a full on rebuild and reached the pinnacle. The Toronto North Stars, while not having the kind of success in the playoffs of other teams, had, at one point, built themselves from the ground up like Texas to find themselves having regular season success. Several expansion franchises have made growth too such as Atlanta, Seattle, and Philadelphia. None of these teams have won the cup yet, but each are on their way up.

Other teams made headlines for their struggles at the lower end of the table. New Orleans, Winnipeg, Manhattan, and even New England get mentioned every once in a while. But 1 franchise i never hear about is the Minnesota Monarchs/Chiefs.

Its been 12 seasons. What have they done? Have they made the playoffs? Important picks? Why are they such a mystery?  Lets dive in.

S53: 12-33-5 for 29 points.

Well thats not great but they were not the worst team that season. Artemi Berezin lead their offence with 39 points in 50 games. Nobody else hit 30 but honourable mentions to Colin Gibbles and Noah Gallagher for ending with 29 each. Markus Tegernako was the netminder and ended the season with a Goals Against Average of 3.39, not great but also not bad. Also posted a .915 Save %, Solid.  Their highest TPE player was Collin Gibbles at 1360 TPE. Okay so young team maybe? 3 players with over 1000 TPE.

S54: 13-34-3 for 29 Points.

Next season see little change i guess. 4 players hit 30 points this time. Boruvka Banananak lead the way with 35 points and Markus was back again. This time sporting a GAA of 4.13 ouch. Also a Save % of .916. So basically this team gets shelled often and it looks rough. 4 players with over 1000 TPE this time including the goalie.

S55: 12-48-0 for 24 Points.

Well, i suppose they needed a full rebuild and should soon start seeing top end talent show up. NOBODY hit 30 points this season and Gibbles lead the way with 28 points. Tegernako between the pipes with a GAA of 3.67 and a save % of .925 showed that he was trying and maybe the defence was improving from last season at least? Looks like a long road but it is growing. Same 4 players have over 1000 TPE but all have grown by at least 200 and notable newcomers Jack Kennedy and Cal Lambovich both join the team as the next two nearest to 1000 TPE.

S56: 16-32-2 for 34 Points.

On the way up slowly. 10 more points gained and a better team we can see in the rest of the stats too. Mika Mayfield leads the newly minted Monarchs with 40 points. Thats the most i have seen here yet. Gallagher, Lambovich, and Gibbles round out the over 30 points crowd. Markus Tegernako is here for the 4th time and putting up more average numbers compared to last season. GGA is down to 3.30, best its been yet. Save % was down to .910 but it is likely that he was also very unlucky. Team is still getting shelled but not as bad. 5 players with over 1000 TPE as Mayfield joins the 4 from last season. Importantly, Cal Lambovich is only 100ish away. Kennedy is gone though.

S57: 21-42-3 for 45 Points in 66 games.

S57 marks the beginning of the SHL's 66 game era. How much growth here is Minny making gains and how much is just a continuation of averages, i don't know. For this era, it is fair to say that solid depth comes from scoring 40 points now, not 30. To that end, MASSIVE jump for leaders as Mika Mayfield manages 67 points. 4 other players had over 40 which is a nice boost. Markus Tegernako is putting up better numbers. GAA of 3.17 and save % of .914. 6 players at over 1000 TPE means things are looking super promising.

S58: 23-36-7 for 53 Points.

Team is on an upward trend in earning points. Its not much but it is honest work. Scoring is down at the top end. Mika only got 60 points and 4 people got over 40 points. Markus Tegernako is still between the pipes and getting better by the year. GAA of 3.09 and a save % of .917. Still only 6 at over 1000 but 2 more players are close. got the makings of a real team soon.

S59: 30-34-2 for 62 Points.

So close to the playoffs. Things have moved slowly but surely upwards. Cal and Gold both topped 60 points but only 2 more players managed over 40. Its a series of ups and downs but they just have to stick to the plan. Markus Tegernako shows off with a 3.10 GAA and .921 Save %. Back down to 5 players over 1000 TPE is a trifle concerning.

S60: 29-31-6 for 64 Points.

BREAKTHROUGH! After all those seasons learning a new system and growing slowly but surely Minnesota have made the playoffs. Gold was best with 72 flipping points. 2 other players had 50 points but nobody else topped 40. Markus Tegernako only played 48 games and had a rough go of it. 16-28-4 with his usual 3.40 GAA and .914 Save %. Hugo Gronroos Started 18 games going 13-3-2 with a GAA of 2.49 and a save % of .915. perhaps change is on the horizon? Markus Tegernako got the nod in the playoffs but was dismal with a GAA of 5.03 and a save % of .892. Rough. Players have over 1000 TPE which is a huge reason why they made it i think.

S61: 30-30-6 for 66 Points.

Their first .500 record. Awesome. Cal got the 72 points this time, but the rest of the team hit off 6 players over 40 points. The sign of growing depth. Hugo Gronroos is now the starter with a GAA of 3.13 and a .911 save %. It is not easy to be a goalie. Only 4 games in the playoffs again. But Hugo posted a .919 Save % and a GAA of 4.01. Now i am not saying that's good enough. But it is better than last season. 9 players over 1000 TPE including their first 2000 TPE player of the FHM era. Future is bright.

S62: 31-34-1 for 64 Points.

Minor backslide i suppose, but things happen. Gold leads again with 64 points this time and Cal has 60. 4 others have over 40 and its okay but does not feel like enough. Hugo is suffering from the workload with a GAA of 3.39 and a save % of .910. Life is tough for young goalies. Again he fairs better in the playoffs and even earns the Monarchs their first playoff win in FHM. Even though it was their only one. GAA of 3.98 and save % of .924 show he is capable. 11 out of 17 players at over 1000 TPE with 3 more crossing 950 shows a healthy roster ready to fight for it.

S63: 18-42-6 for 42 Points.

Not sure why the bottom has dropped out on these guys. From slipping into the playoffs to a rough fall. Cal only nabbed 53 points as the leader. 2 others had 40 points. Okay so scoring took a HUGE hit. Understandable. Hugo Gronroos and Valtteri Aalto shared the net. Hugo put up a record of 9-17-3 with a GAA of 4.04 and a Save % of .896 ouch. Aalto went 9-25-3 with a GAA of 3.85 and Save % of .902, not perfect. 11 players over 1000 TPE but neither goalie is even close.

S64: 22-43-1 for 45 Points.

Back to the grind of improvements. Seems like old hat. Cal still lead the way with 53 points again. Kynwyl Pearce also crossed 50. Nobody else even topped 40. Scoring is dying up bad. Hugo Gronroos took back the net with a GAA of 3.68 and save % of .920. Massive bounce back from the last 2 seasons. 10 over 1000 TPE but neither goalie is earning at all.

S65: 6-59-1 for 13 points.

The bottom has dropped out yet again. Points leader was Pearce with only 35. Only 1 other lad had over 30 which is not going to do any good really. Enes Gundogan has taken over the starter's role but its like being fed to the wolves. GAA of 4.69 and Save % of .915 shows he and Hugo are getting shelled. 6 Players over 1000 TPE shows off why things are not going as well.

S66: 3-23-1 for 7 points through 27 games.

This brings us to now, and while it doesn't bode well, it will likely be an incremental improvement over last season. 3 players are set to average over 40 points, Enes Gundogan is back to getting absolutely shelled and he is suffering. But he is earning TPE so he could be on the rise. Its a young group of royalty and they may finally put all the pieces together by S70.

Its featured a lot of ups and downs but i do think we don't hear much about the Monarchs because they haven't factored in much and now are working on a slow build back up.

Its like 1600 or so words.
