Mats Marner will be calling it a career at the end of Season Seventy Four. It has almost been four years in real life and eighteen seasons in the SHL since starting his career back in March 2020. Marner played for three SHL teams throughout his career including the Calgary Dragon (two seasons), San Francisco Pride (one season) and spent the majority of his career with the Chicago Syndicate (fifteen seasons) becoming part of Chicago’s captaincy group. In the juniors Mats Marner played his entire SMJHL career with the Newfoundland Berserker (four seasons) being part of their captaincy group as well. On the international stage Mats Marner represented team Latvia in the IIHF tournament for an impressive eighteen seasons being part of the team’s captaincy group for many seasons as well.

Marner was a part of Newfoundland’s Season Fifty Five Four Star Cup championship team and was blessed with being a part of many great Newfoundland teams that made multiple deep playoff runs. In addition during his junior career, Marner won various SMJHL individual awards along with setting the SMJHL FHM Fifty Game Era single season goal record.
In Season Fifty Seven at the SHL level in his first season Marner's play earned him a spot on the SHL's All-Rookie Team. After spending a couple of seasons between Calgary and San Francisco Marner’s career really began to explode offensively after joining the Chicago Syndicate in Season Sixty free agency. Marner's career really took off in Chicago having 10 seasons averaging over a point a game, being named a 1st Team All-SHL in multiple instances (Season Sixty Four, Season Sixty Five, and Season Sixty Six), leading the SHL in goals both in Season Sixty Four and Season Sixty Six, and receiving various SHL nominations/awards. In addition, Mats Marener got to experience a lot of team success in Chicago including winning the Challenge Cup with the Syndicate in season Sixty Four and having a couple deep playoff runs.

Here are some of the career statistical highlights for Mats Marner as of four games into his final season:

1123 Games Played | 531 Goals | 649 Assists | 1180 Points
*** Currently 5th all-time in SHL career points
*** Currently 3rd all-time in SHL career goals

1x Challenge Cup
2x President's Trophy
1x Four Star Cup
1x Laurifer Trophy

3x First Team All Star
1x SHL All-Rookie Team
2x Jay McDonald Trophy
1x Ron Mexico Nominee
1x Aidan Richan Nominee
1x Raymond Lindsay Trophy
1x Alex Light Trophy
1x Jared Hanson Trophy
1x Roberto Martucci Trophy

Looking back at Mats Manrer’s career I do not think much more could have gone right and really could not have asked for anything more out of Marner's career both on and off the ice. If regression was not so harsh I think Marner would have had an even longer career but it was important to retire at a point where he is still producing offensively around a point a game pace. The last thing on Marner’s career bucket list is to surpass 1,200 points which is currently twenty points away from happening.
