Deep Dive #1: Teemu Salami’s Draft Night
#1

Today we take a deep dive into Teemu Salami’s draft night experience. According to Wikipedia, Salami “is a cured sausage consisting of fermented and air-dried meat, typically pork.” Oh wait, not that Salami. Teemu Salami is who you came here for. That Salami is a Detroit Falcons forward currently playing in the SMJHL. How did he get there though?

In the weeks leading up to the S74 SMJHL Draft, the six-foot, 209-pounds right winger had a lot of hype. Despite just learning how to skate about a month before, there was a lot of buzz surrounding Salami. Many thought he would be a first round pick, with some projecting he would go as high as number two overall to the Carolina Kraken. It puzzled Salami because in addition to just learning how to skate, he didn’t even own a hockey stick. He watched the game of hockey as a kid growing up in Helsinki, Finland but that was about it. Regardless, Salami was excited about the upcoming draft and the prospect of becoming a hockey player.

Enter draft night on November 25th. As the picks rolled in and announcements were made, Salami started to fall. Tumble even. Was this particular salami too fermented? Were teams concerned of his diet consisting of salami and dino nuggets would become a problem? Nobody knew. One SMJHL team even live scouted Salami, perhaps an indication that they didn’t expect him to be on the board that late.

The first round concluded. Salami was still on the board. The second round then wrapped up as well. Salami was still sitting there. What was going on? Salami wasn’t sure, but he tried his best to stay calm and collected. While snacking on some salami and drinking some cold ones he picked up the night of the draft, the Finland native could be seen joking with fellow draftee Literally Wizard (@baz). Wizard had been drafted earlier in the first round by the Nevada Battleborn. For Salami though, the show must go on.

Enter the third round. The first few picks of the round started to roll in and Salami was still available. Following pick 34 which was forfeited, for some mischievous behavior surely, the Detroit Falcons were on the clock. The pick was in. “With the 35th pick, the Detroit Falcons select…Teemu Salami.” There it was. For Salami, it was a giant sense of relief. He was finally off the board after what seemed like an eternity of waiting at home. While Salami listened to analysts calling him a steal, he was more focused on getting to work.

The first round buzz proved to be all smokescreen, but the fall lit a fire under this meathead. Salami was eager to get to Detroit to meet his new teammates. He didn’t know much about the city of Detroit or the Falcons organization, but he was thankful for the opportunity they had given him. Salami flew to Detroit that same night where he was greeted by management, coaches, and players. He was thrilled to see some familiar faces in Stormlord Imotekh (@JoeSteel), Emil Karlsson (@dankoa), and Trevor Lahey (@DigDoug11). At that moment, Salami instantly knew it was meant to be. He wouldn’t have his draft night any other way.
