BlueLine Media: Player Scouting Report

Joe 'Sloppy Joe' Degen
5'11 185 lbs
Left-Defensemen RH
Age: 21
Hometown: New York, New York

Wisconsin Badgers' left-defenseman Joe Degen has etched his name in the walls of college hockey history with a three-year display of brilliance and drama that could fill movie-theaters. A masterful puck-moving defenseman, Degen's journey from a promising freshman to one of the NCAA's most controversial and dynamic players. Degen now looks to further pursue his audacious hockey career in the SHL as an undrafted Free Agent.

Freshman Phenom (Year 1):

From the moment Joe Degen stepped onto the ice as a Wisconsin Badger, it was clear that something special was in the making. As a freshman, Degen tallied an impressive 25 assists, showcasing his innate ability to orchestrate plays from the blue line highlighted by his vision and IQ in the offensive zone. His passing percentage hovered around an astounding 85%, setting the tone for what would become a remarkable collegiate career, loudly establishing himself as a dual-threat defenseman from the beginning, demanding respect from his fellow peers.

Sophomore Surge (Year 2):

Building on his impressive debut season, Degen's sophomore campaign showed that his first was no fluke. His passing accuracy reached new heights at 90%, flashing his evolving playmaking abilities. Degen's on-ice vision and decision-making matured as the Badgers coasted to the Elite 8 but fell to the Boston University Terriers. Degen amassed 3 goals and 5 assists leading all Badgers in Playoff scoring.

A Saga Pt. 1 (Year 3)

By his junior year, Joe Degen had become a household name in college hockey circles. A magician with the puck, Degen's passing proficiency soared to an astonishing 92%, leaving scouts in awe. His numbers were off the charts, exemplifying his ability to control play when he was on the ice. Degen's decision-making under pressure became a hallmark of his game, proven by only 15 giveaways throughout the season. The left-defenseman's impact was undeniable, both as a scoring threat and in the Badgers’ defensive zone.

However, the glittering facade of instant success for Joe Degen was not without its shadows. Rumors of Degen's off-ice shenanigans began to surface – late-night parties, excessive drinking, and his trademark, showing up to practices and games hungover. The local fraternities became a playground for Degen, often resulting in disciplinary issues that tested the front office’s patience.

A Saga Pt. 2 (Year 3)

During the season, an infamous viral video of Joe Degen appeared on various social media platforms of him attending an off-campus fraternity event during what seems like the late hours of the night. Degen was recorded sloppily walking and falling over himself, mumbling the words, “Why won't she love me?” proceeding to fall down a flight of stairs, earning him the infamous nickname “Sloppy Joe.”

After a suspension for the rest of the season, Sloppy Joe Degen was able to lead the Badgers to a NCAA Title appearance, where they yet again fell short, but to the Quinnipiac Wildcats. Degen led the charge with 2 goals and 10 assists, showcasing why the Badgers have refused to give up on the player.

Year 4: Wild Ride

Sloppy Joe Degen started off the season on a record-breaking streak of 6 goals and 13 assists in the team's first 9 games. However, the chants of Sloppy Joe and opposing teams' trash-talk seemed to alter Degen’s mindset and confidence. Degen went on to take an absence of leave, abandoning the Badgers and leaving fans wondering.

Degen would not return to college hockey, only to recently announce his aspirations as a player in the SHL. Degen seems to be a target to a few teams looking for that quarterbacking right-handed defensemen that can play both sides. However, some teams wonder if his head is in the right place and whether they'll get Joe Degen, Wisconsin Badger, or... Sloppy Joe. Who will take the risk on Joe Degen?
