When we discuss pure value selections in drafts, one of the initial names that should come to mind is none other than Elyk. He was initially drafted in the SMJHL by the Regina Force, with the forty-eighth selection in the S19 SMJHL draft. In the S20 SHL draft, he was drafted at the very same selections number by the Winnipeg Jets. Since then, he has been on a mission to prove the forty-seven selections ahead of him are not better than himself. Perhaps he has not been better than all of those players, but he certainly has been better than most and is perhaps the largest steal of the S19 SHL draft class. This scouting report will focus on his strengths, weaknesses, and his overall structure as a player currently.

Strengths:

Skating: Elyk is lighting quick with a pair of skates on the ice and can be considered one of the more dynamic skaters in the entire league. He can easily glide through sections of the ice that may be covered by defenseman and he still will not be touched, because he simply has that much speed and skills as it pertains to skating. Elyk maintains a strong and balanced stride when entering the opposition’s zone at full speed and has essentially mastered the technical skills of skating. Make no mistake about it, his skating ability is just not placed on speed, as evidenced in his play.

Strength: Elyk attends the gym on virtually a daily basis and it has certainly showed in his game thus far in his career. He is very difficult to rattle with hits and is it sometimes even more difficult to get the puck off his stick, though certainly not impossible. this strength also allows him to brush aside his opponents at times, though not in a checking manner, just from the muscles he possess in his arms.

Endurance: Elyk has a never say die attitude, which sort of equates to his motor on the ice. Rarely will you see him simply give up on a play or not give maximum effort into it. In addition, it takes several lengthy shifts in a row, in order for him to feel any significant form of fatigue, which allows him to carry an abundance of minutes and often allow his teammates who may get tired more easily, have longer breaks, in order to fully rest them properly. This obviously adds to their production, since they would hardly be tired.

Puck Handling: Very slick and creative with how he maneuvers the puck on his stick, Elyk is certainly a show to watch once he gains possession of the puck. Will make a Sports Center top ten list a few times a season, simply because he embarrassed one of the opponent’s defenseman with a skill move with the puck. Connects quite well with his goal scoring abilities, because once the opposition is faked out, he has more open space to shoot the puck, which logically leads to a higher percentage shot being taken.

Scoring: By far his best natural skill and traits as a player, Elyk can be considered the master sniped. He has pin-point precision on where he wants the puck to enter the net and can do so whether it is from an incredibly fast slap-shot or a rather sneaky wrist shot. Incredibly dangerous even close to the blue line and must never be given even a half decent look at the net, because if so, the odds of him scoring on you can be quite high. Furthermore, since he needs to be so well covered, his teammates often get more space to shoot, which can allow production on the team as a whole to be increased.

Weaknesses:

Checking: We are unaware if he simply afraid of hitting someone or making a fool out of himself by trying, but not only does Elyk never try to check someone, on the super rare occasion he does; he hurts himself more than the opponent. In fact, once he misses, the player with the puck is completely uncovered and this can lead to many two-on-ones or three-on-two plays. It is safe to assume that Elyk will never be a good checker in his career, perhaps not even a competent one.

Face Offs: Centers constantly screw up at times and get kicked out of the face-off circle. It is then usually a winger’s responsibility to fix the mess. Elyk cannot do this, because he lacks both sufficient timing and skill to win a face off. Honestly, should the center ever could eliminated from the circle, it is essentially an automatic win for the opposition. This can be detrimental, especially if the face off is for a crucial possession at the end of the game.

Fighting: A pylon might be more effective than Elyk when dropping the gloves. Has neither the demeanor or skill to energize his team through winning a fight. In fact, he might do so poorly that it will make his team just squeamish from pure disappointment and failure. Strictly a finesse player and should not be partaking in fights any time during his SHL career.

Good, but can use some improvement:

Passing: A capable passer, but certainly not one that will cause scouts, fans, and players alike to turn their heads from pure awesomeness. Can make the ordinary and required passes on a shift, but you cannot expect him to make the pass from down the ice that would lead to a breakaway. Has shown signs of improvement on this skill though and can quite possibly become a rather good playmaker in the future.

Defense: Average defensive player currently. He can get into the proper position to stop some offensive possessions by the opposition, but can also be fooled easily be some of the more dynamic forwards in the league. His skating is what currently allows him to not get burned constantly, but his pure technical defensive knowledge of the playbook is seemingly lacking. Can be a productive defender though in the future, should he work hard at it and absorb everything he can from his coaches.

Production: By no means can Elyk’s production be considered poor, as he did score fourteen goals in fifty-two games for the Winnipeg Jets this season, and that is certainly respectable. However, twenty-seven points in fifty-two games is simply average for someone of Elyk’s talents. He can certainly improve on production and most likely will, but for now we can only call him a decent producer.

Overall:

From where he was drafted, it is truly hard to complain about what Elyk has becomes as a player, in fact; it should be commended. He exemplifies the notion of never giving up and making those who passed over you pay for their mistake. He is a dynamic skate, which helps him get more room to shoot and use his best trait, which would be his shooting to become even more effective. His endurance allows these traits to be utilized to their fullest and lengthiest ability, because the Elyk will only first become tired towards the middle or end of the game.

Game of Thrones Comparison: Bronn

Bronn is one of the most underrated swordsman in all of the seven kingdoms of Westeros, simply because he came from a low level house, he is a sell sword, and did not become knighted until a much later date in his life. Make no mistake about it though, he is quite effective, and often catches people by surprise. Elyk has caught everyone in the league by surprise from where he was drafted and to what he is currently in the league. Elyk is productive and though he may not be the best player right now, do not underestimate him, or you will regret it once the game ends.
