Strengths

S1: Shot: McLaren is a very good shooter. He has a solid shot and is more likely to shoot it than he is to pass, which is good enough for a secondary scoring option at his level. With average wheels to go along with his shot and motor that won’t quite he will find a spot for himself on the Power Play and Top Six in his future.
S2: Offensive Zone Awareness: As noted above Nasher has all the skills to become an old school Power Play specialist. While not particularly strong on the puck, and with only average skating skills his game is best kept in a protected role. But when he gets the offensive zone starts he makes things happen. He is an underrated passer and will contribute points any way that he can.

Weaknesses

W1: Physicality: Like the Right Winger above him on the depth chart, Nasher at times seems to shy away from the big hits that come with the game of hockey. While not a big guy, under 200 lb., Don Cherry would be upset that a 6’1 North American plays such small man’s game. Nasher was able to find some hits this season, just shy of 50, but they were more bumps than checks.
W2: One Dimensional: To go along with the above point, Nasher does not seem to have anything on his mind when he steps on the ice except to put up points. In a very basic understanding of the game that may be the prefered mindset of one’s forwards, but in practice it is not always the greatest ideology and could be part of the reason that the Scarecrows were upset in the playoffs this season (not blaming Nasher alone, but the fact that the Crow’s two biggest offensive rookies were lackluster in their own end.

Opportunities

O1: Elite Scoring Potential: If Nasher wants to really elevate his game he should put a huge focus on getting better with his shot. Robb Wind won’t be hanging around St. Louis forever and when his time is over the puck will fall on Nasher’s stick when it is time to get the go ahead goal. If he works on getting stronger with the puck and putting more pucks on net we should see a future where Nasher is a consistent threat to lead his team in goals.

Putting It All Together

Nasher has not been the hardest working prospect this season, and that will likely show at the draft. However, he has not given up and looks to become a future SHLer. He is likely someone who will need 3 seasons in the SMJHL before he is ready to make the jump, and unless he kicks his training into a gear we haven’t seen before he will likely hold secondary roles for the majority of his career. However, there is always potential and that should not be overlooked. Nasher seems to be well liked by his team and could surprise many in the seasons to come.

Projected Round: Third

NHL Comparison: Gustav Nyquist
