<div align="center"> COME JOIN TEAM AUSTRIA </div>

There's no question that Team Austria has been down for a while now, but we are primed for a comeback with the mix of vets and youth we have. As you decide on your country when you create a new player, we ask that you strongly consider Austria as your birthplace.

We have some great vets in King, Flamel, Bursyk,Kinsler, Pomery and Brojled. The past couple of seasons, we have added some great active youth as well in Laine, Malkin, Vader, Feist, Watcher and a great, young goalie in Berger who stood on his head in his first IIHF tournament for us.

We have also been lucky enough to nab a couple of players off of the unassigned player list in Pellegrino and Gan.

But more is needed to complete our comeback, We need depth in all areas especially center, defense and a backup goalie. Even if you haven't chosen Austria as your country and feel that you will not get a chance to compete with your country for several seasons, we are interested in you as an assigned transfer as well.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to either of the co-heads of Austria in Gaia or hockeyis66 and we look forward to having you help Austria get to the top of the internation hockey mountain.

Can't even spell my name right.

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”

Although Austria was coming into the S27 IIHF tournament with low expectations, the feeling around the locker room was upbeat with the additions of several new players – Winger Don Pellegrino fresh from his rookie season in Hamilton, winger Sekkusu Gan who finished his last season in the SMJHL with Halifax, defenseman Johnny Cahill who also finished his last junior season with St Louis, winger Xavier Lane who joined juniors after the draft and juniors rookie Marc-Andre Malkin. These players joined second year IIHF vets in Feist, Wachter, Vader and Berger and joined the much more seasoned vets up front in Kinsler, Brojled, Flamel, Bursyuk, and King and Pomery on the blueline.

Canada v Austria The first game was going to be a tough test right out of the gate as Austria played host to Canada. Austria would actually be up 2 to 1 after the first period behind goals from Kinsler and Wachter while Canada got a goal from Zerchai. Unforetunately for Austria, those would be the only two goals they would score in the game as Canada added two more goals in the second period and two more goals late in the third period to win the game 5 to 2. Berger made 22 saves in goal. The positive Austria took out of the game is the close was close for over 55 minutes and those two late goals skewed the final score. Cahill and Lane each had assists in their first games for Austria.

Uk v Austria Austria was the road team in game 2 of the tournament as they played the United Kingdom. Brojled would give Austria a 1 to 0 lead after the first period but the UK would score two goals in the second period to take a 2 to 1 lead and then Burch would add an early third period score to put the UK up 3 to 1. However, Kinsler would score his second of the tourney to pull Austria back within one goal with a little over five minutes left in the game. However, Austria would not score again and lose their second straight by a score of 3 to 2. Berger made 27 saves.

Canada v Austria Game 3 was the return match with Canada already in what would turn out to be a pretty exciting game. The teams exchanged goals in the first period as Wert scored for Canada and Brojled for Austria. The two countries would do the same thing in the second period, but Austria would score first behind Pellegrino’s first ever IIHF goal and then Zerchai would score his 3rd of the tourney (all against Austria so far too). Austria would outshoot Canada in the third period, but neither team would score as the game went into overtime. Just over a minute in, Horvat’s shot would find the back of the net and Canada would win the game 3 to 2 in overtime. Berger had a huge game in goal with 32 saves as Austria musters their first point of the tourney.

Finland v Austria Still in search of their first win, Austria played host to Finland. The Fins would jump out to a 3 to 0 lead with two goals in the first period and the first goal in the second period before Austria would get on the scoreboard as Chamas scored his first right before the second period was over. Finland would hold Austria scoreless in the third period while adding another goal to win the game 4 to 1. Berger faced a lot of rubber in the game and made 30 saves on 34 shots while his offense didn’t help him out much by only getting 22 shots on goal.

Usa v Austria The halfway point of the round robin schedule had Austria facing off against the USA. Austria would take a 2-0 lead in the first period behind goals from Chamas and Bursyuk and then double their lead in the second period as Brojled scored both goals for Austria. Crutchfield would ruin the shutout bid with a little more than six minutes left in the game with USA’s only goal, but King would put an exclamation point on Austria’s first win of the tourney with his first as Austria won the game 5 to 1. Berger stopped 28 out of 29 shots he faced. King, Bursyuk and Brojled all had multi point games in the win.

Usa v Austria So, as great as the last game was against the USA, the next game against them was equally as bad. Crutchfield scored the only goal of the first period as the USA went up 1 to 0, but it was the second period where Austria fell apart as both Fleming and Knight scored two goals each while Austria got two goals from Bursyuk as the USA took a 5 to 2 lead into the third period. Jesster would add one more goal early in the third period for the red, white and blue as the USA won 6 to 2. Berger didn’t have his best stuff tonite as he stopped 11 of 15 shots while Kubicky came in relief and made 12 saves on 14 shots. Bursyuk and Brojled each had two points in the loss.

Uk v Austria After getting hammered by the USA, Austria faced the UK for the second time. Only one goal was scored in the game through the first two period and that was by the UK’s Killington just 27 seconds into the game as the goalies were stealing the show. Austria would tie the game at 1 to 1 just over a minute into the third period as Flamel scored his first, but the UK would respond with not only one goal, but two goals within six minutes after the Austrian goal to win the game 3 to 1. Berger was once again solid in net by making 27 saves.

Sweden v Austria Game #8 would be the first game of the tourney against Sweden in a back to back situation. Sweden would score a late power play goal in the first period off of the stick of Eriksson for a 1 to 0 lead, but at the time, no one would know that would be the only goal of the game for the Swedes. Late in the second period, Wachter would tie the game at 1 to 1 with Gan and Malkin getting the assists and their first ever IIHF points. In an exciting third period, Berger would stop all 10 shots he faced while assisting on Flamel’s power play game winning goal about halfway through the period as Austria won the game 2 to 1. Berger made 24 saves in picking up his second win of the tourney. For his efforts, Berger was named the number one star of the game.

Sweden v Austria Oddly enough coming into game 9 of the schedule, Austria was still mathematically alive in making the top 4 even though they were in last place. Not only did they basically have to win their last two games, they needed the countries above them to gain nothing more than a point. Things didn’t get started as Austria liked as Lidstrom scored just 27 seconds into the game, Flamel tied it up shortly after that as the period ended in a 1 to 1 tie. Austria would take control in the second period as Bursyuk netted his 4th of the tourney and Gan would score his first IIHF career goal to give Austria a 3 to 1 lead going into the third period. Flamel would score his second of the game early in the third period to give Austria a 4 to 1 lead before Sweden would get one back to make the final score 4 to 2. Austria would fire 44 shots on goal in the game compared to 31 for Sweden and Berger would stop 29 of them. Pellegrino, Kinsler and Flamel each had two points in the win. However, even with the win, Austria would be eliminated from medal contention since the countries above them also gain victories.

Finland v Austria For as much success Austria had against Sweden, Austria could find little success against Finland and it showed in the last game of the tourney. The two teams did exchange goals in the first four minutes of the game as Linna scored for Finland and Flamel scored for Austria, but that is about where the game stopped being competitive as Finland ran all over Austria the rest of the way. Salmon scored two more goals in the first period for Finland as they went up 3 to 1. Anrikkanen scored the only goal of the second period as the Fins increased their lead to 4 to 1. Then Thomaz, Ruutu and Onoprienko added to the Finnish total with goals as they won the game going away 7 to 1. Berger did his best in goal with 22 saves on 28 shots and was replaced by Kubicky who made 8 saves on 9 shots. Lots of minuses besides players names on the Austrian side after this one.

Austria finishes 6th in their group with a 3-6-1 record good for 10 points, an improvement over last year’s tourney at least. They only scored 22 goals while giving up 35 for a difference of -13. Austria was led by Flamel in both goals and points as he had 5 and 9 respectively. Kinsler and King each had 6 assists to lead Austria in that category. Nobody on the team was a plus, while Kinsler and Vader each had 10 penalty minutes to be tied for the highest on the team. Berger was 3-6-1 during the tourney with a 3.47 GAA and .887 save percentage in playing the majority of minutes over the course of the 10 games.

For the younger players, it was a tough learning experience as Pellegrino had a goal and two assists, Wachter had two goals, Gan had a goal and an assist, Cahill, Vader and Malkin each had two assists and Feist and Laine each chipped in with an assist. However, many of these players were facing a higher level of competition for the first time and gained some invaluable knowledge about what it takes to make it at the next level.

With a new season now upon us and international transfer now open again, the Austrian National Team would like to announce that the #1 faceoff specialist in the world has decided to transfer to Austria and team up with his pal Cahill…..

Alexander Charlyb'y!!!!!!!!

Alexander will take over the 3rd line duties and allow Austria to move around wingers back to their wing spots as well as adding another active member to the LR. Austria did get one commitment from a free agent who joined the SMJHL after the draft in Aronne Zamloch who is also a center and will hopefully stay active and keep updating. The team will also be on the search for another defenseman, at this point unassigned, to bump one of the inactives out of the starting lineup and more than likely pair with Malkin on the 3rd grouping.

Announcement

After the assigned transfer of Charlyb’y to Austria, Austria was still in need of an active #6 defenseman. One name stuck out on the unassigned list and that was Hunky Monkey of Prince George. We threw together a proposal and was able to get him on board with us to replace Eichel Jordan who had gone inactive. What is the neat thing about the transfer is that both him and Malkin are the younger members of the SHL in terms of real age and are now part of Austria. Even though they were not on the same line together, one day they could anchor a strong Austrian defense since Malkin is more of a two way offensive type of player while Monkey is more of a stay at home type. They should compliment each other well down the road.

Game Recaps

Game 1 – Lativa Latvia vs Austria Austria
The first period of the first game of the tourney was quiet for both teams as neither one of them could score as Austria outshot Lativa 14 to 7. It seemed like the second period was destined to end scoreless as well, but Austria received a late power play chance and Flamel would score with assists going to Kinsler and Pellegrino. Austria would add two more goals in the back half of the third period as Bursyuk and Brojled each netted their first and Berger would not allow any goals in for his first IIHF shutout as Austria won 3 to 0. Lativa would actually come back and outshoot Austria 31 to 30 in the game, but Berger was the difference in goal and earned the number one star of the game for his efforts. Pellegrino and Kinsler each had two assists in the win. Flamel led the team in shots in 5 shots, Vader led the team in hits with 5 and shot blocks with 3 and Charlyb’y was 5 for 10 on faceoffs.

Game 2 – Austria Austria vs Czechoslovakia Czechoslovakia
Austria scored the only goal of the first period as Pomery scored his first goal of the tourney on assists from Flamel and Vader late in the period. The Czech’s outshot Austria 9 to 6. However, that was end of the good news for Austria as the Czech scored five times in the second period, including 2 goals in the first 37 seconds of the second period, to take a commanding 5 to 1 lead in the game. Just 4 seconds into the period Laflamme, then Satan scored on the power play just 33 seconds later. Then Satan scored his second of the game a little more than 7 minutes later and about six minutes after that, he completed his natural hat trick with his third and final goal of the game. Szlerchek finished out the scoring in the period with his first and the rout was on. Neither team scored in the third period as the Czechs fired 40 shots on goal compared to 25 for Austria in the 5 to 1 win. Berger made 35 saves in the loss. Kinsler had 4 shots while Cahill had 3 shot blocks and a whopping 11 hits to lead Austria. Charlyb’y was 5 for 16 on his faceoffs.

Game 3 – Austria Austria vs USA Usa
Coming off of a tough loss, Austria faced the USA and Austria would jump out to a 1-0 just under three minutes into the game as Bursyuk scored his second of the tourney with Kinsler and Pellegrino getting the assists on the goal. Both teams would only have five shots on goal in the period as Austria held onto a 1-0 lead. The USA would outshoot Austria 12 to 2 in the second period and would tie the game just over two minutes into the second period on the power play as Reid scored his first. However, Austria would score to make it 2 to 1 later in the second period as Bursyuk netted his second of the game and 3rd overall. Kinsler picked up another assist as did Vader on the goal. The USA outshot Austria 9 to 3 in the third period and 26 to 10 overall for the game, but Austria did not give up the tying goal in the final period as they won the game 2 to 1. Berger made 25 saves in earning the third star of the game. Bursyuk had two goals to be the number one star while Kinsler had 2 assists to be the number two star. Cahill dished out 9 hits this game along with 3 shot blocks to lead Austria while Charlyb’y was 4 for 8 on faceoffs.

Game 4 – Canada Canada vs Austria Austria
Austria again scored the only goal of the first period in a game as Kinsler found the back of the net just 21 seconds into the game for a 1-0 Austria lead. Bursyuk and Pellegrino assisted on the goal as Austria outshot Canada 8 to 6 in the period. Just short of four minutes into the second period, Flamel scored his second of the tourney for Austria to put them up 2-0. Vader and Pomery got the assists. Brojled made it 3-0 Austria a little bit later with her second goal as Gan and King assisted. Canada would strike back before the end of the period when Horvat scored to make it 3 to 1, but Austria would not cave and would score a power play goal with just 8 seconds left in the period to increase their lead to 4 to 1. The goal was scored by Cahill, his first, from Kinsler and Flamel. Canada would cut the lead back to two again just under three minutes into the third period but thirty seconds later, Flamel would score his second of the game and the last goal of the game to give Austria a 5 to 2 win. Pomery and Vader got the assists. Canada outshot Austria 32 to 28 in the game and 15 to 8 in the third. Berger made 30 saves. Brojled led in shots with 4 while Vader had 7 hits and Cahill had 4 shot blocks. Charlyb’y only won 4 out of 16 faceoffs.

Game 5 – USA Usa vs Austria Austria
Typically, Austria beats USA by one goal in the first game and then in the second game, USA crushes Austria. Austria would score the only two goals of the first period for a 2-0 lead as Lehner scored early in the game again for Austria and Gan would score his first late in the period. USA only had one shot on goal in the period. However, they crushed Austria 18 to 8 in the second period and outscored them 3 to 1 as the game went into the third period tied at 3 to 3. Kinsler scored the lone Austrian goal, his second of the tourney, while the USA got goals from Reid, Russell and Jesster. Normally, Austria would fall apart in the 3rd period in a game like this, but not this time as Laine and Gan scored third period goals and the Austrian defense limited the USA to just 5 shots as Austria won 5 to 3. Berger made 21 saves for his 4th win in 5 games. Gan had 2 goals, while Pomery, Brojled and Kinsler each had two points. Pomery and Vader were both a +4, Kinsler had 9 shots, Hunky Monkey had 7 hits and Vader had 2 shot blocks to lead their categories. Through 5 games in this tournament, Austria is 4 and 1 and in first place and has won more games than many of their previous tournaments.

Game 6 – Austria Austria vs Canada Canada
Ah yes, the return match in the first game of the back half of the round robin that would find Austria to struggle to get points. Canada absolutely dominated the first two periods of the game outshooting Austria 27 to 12 and outscoring them 4 to 0 behind goals from King, Longford, Einstein and Kane as the Canadians flexed their international muscle. Austria did score early in the third period as Flamel netted his 4th, but they couldn’t get another goal the rest of the game while Boychuk added a late goal for Canada to make the final score 5 to 1. Shots were 35 to 20 in favor of Canada. Berger made 30 saves in taking the loss. Flamel had 6 shots on goal to lead Austria while Laine had 6 hits and King led with 3 shot blocks. Charlyb’y was 8 for 14 in the faceoff circle.

Game 7 – Austria Austria vs Latvia Latvia
Even though Latvia outshot Austria 14 to 8 in the first period, the game remained scoreless as both goalies were on top of their game early on. Latvia again took it to Austria in the second period by once again outshooting them 15 to 6, but could only score one goal compared to none for Austria. Johnson scored the goal, his first of the tourney as Latvia took a 1-0 lead into the final period. Latvia was hanging on, but with less than four minutes left in the game, Brojled scored her 3rd of the tourney to send the game into overtime even though Austria was outshot 12 to 5 in the third. Neither team scored in overtime as both countries had 3 shots on goal. Berger stopped the first two shooters while Austria was stopped once and missed the net twice and then Hamilton scored the game winner for Latvia as they won 2 to 1 in a shootout. Berger made 43 saves and was named the game’s number one star. Brojled had 8 shots on goal to lead Austria while King had 3 shot blocks and 4 players had 3 hits each in the loss. Charlyb’y was 9 of 13 in faceoffs.

Game 8 – Czechoslovakia Czechoslovakia vs Austria Austria
This was a big game since the Czech destroyed Austria 5 to 1 earlier and the two teams are fighting to get into the medal round. A win would get one country basically close to being in, while the other will have to fight the final two games to get in. Flamel scored his 5th goal of the tourney and the only goal of the first period as Austria went up 1 to 0. Wachter and Vader got the assists on the goal. The Czech scored early in the second period on the power play to tie the game, but with less than five minutes left in the period, Kinsler put Austria back on top with his 3rd goal of the tourney as Cahill and Bursyuk got the assists. Before the period was over however, Laflamme tied the game once again with his 6th as we went into the third period tied at 2. Neither team was able to break through most of the third period until with just over a minute left in the game, Pomery scored his 2nd goal of the tourney to give Austria a 3 to 2 win. Flamel and Vader would assist on the game winning goal and send Austria to the medal round for the first time in a while (maybe ever?). Austria outshot the Czech 19 to 16 in the game. Berger made 14 saves for his 5th win. Flamel and Vader each had two points in the win. Bursyuk led Austria in shots with 4, Kinsler and Laine each had 3 hits and Cahill and Bursyuk each had 3 shot blocks. Charlyb’y was 8 for 12 on faceoffs.

Games 9 and 10

Austria Austria vs UK Uk / UK Uk vs Austria Austria

Austria dropped the first game to the UK 3 to 1 even though Austria opened up the scoring in the game in the second period behind Flamel’s 6th goal of the tourney, but the UK would score 3 straight goals in the third period to take home the win and outshoot Austria 31 to 20 in the process. Collins, O’Callahan and Palat scored for the UK. Berger made 28 saves in the loss. Pellegrino had 4 shots for Austria while Vader led in hits with 3 and Malkin and King each had two shot blocks. Charlyb’y was dominate again on faceoffs by winning 10 of 13.
In the second game, Palat gave the UK a 1-0 lead in the first period but Austria would score the first two goals in the second period to take a 2 to 1 lead. Kinsler netted his 4th and Charlyb’y scored his first international goal and Monkey got his first international point with an assist on the goal. However, the UK would tie the game on the power play in the second period and win the game in the third with the only goal of the period. Killington scored the final two goals for the UK in the 3 to 2 win. Berger stopped 21 shots as his record fell to 5-4-1 in the tourney. Kinsler had 4 shots and 4 hits along with Vader to lead Austria while Cahill added 3 shot blocks. Charlyb’y was 6 for 16 on faceoffs in this game.

Quarterfinals vs Russia Russia

Finishing 3rd in their group, Austria will cross over and play Russia who finished 2nd in their group. Russia is also a former IIHF winner and a great model for Austria to follow in learning how to build up an international hockey program. The nerves were there early on as Russia scored just 8 seconds into the game and then added another one shortly after the period was halfway over for a 2 to 0 lead. However, Austria would go on the power play shortly after the Russian goal and King would score with the man advantage to cut the lead to 2 to 1 after the first period in which Russia outshot Austria 11 to 5. Austria would fire 16 shots on goal in the second but Harter would stop them all while Russia got one goal on 12 shots to take a 3 to 1 lead into the final period. Koroviev scored for Russia. Austria did get one goal back but that was on the power play with just 11 seconds left in the game as Pellegrino scored from Malkin and Kinsler as Russia won the game 3 to 2 even though Austria outshot them 30 to 27. Berger made 24 saves in the loss. Flamel had 10 shots on goal but could not get any past Harter. Cahill had 4 hits and Vader had 4 shot blocks to lead Austria in those stats while Charlyb’y was 9 for 16 on faceoffs in the game.

SMJHL Player Profiles

Alexander Charlyb’y – Scarecrows St Louis Scarecrows Scarecrows – Alexander transferred from Canada after his pal, Cahill did the season before. Charlyb’y is a face-off specialist as he won almost 63% of the draws he took in the SMJHL (nearly 1,200 of them). He did chip in with 3 goals, 11 assists in 50 games. He was also responsible defensively as he was a +10. He found himself in the penalty box for 28 minutes, dished out 38 hits, took 36 shots and only blocked 3 shots. In the IIHF tourney, he played about 13 minutes per game and scored one goal and was a +2. He was also about 49% on his faceoff wins. Looks to be playing another season in juniors and then getting the call up to the SHL.

Eugene Feist – Scarecrows St Louis Scarecrows Scarecrows – Feist is coming off of a big year for the Scarecrows as he led them in scoring with 40 points and was second on the team in both goals scored with 17 and assists with 23. He was also a +11 with 43 PIMs, 60 hits, 130 shots and 18 shot blocks. He is more of a winger than he is a center since his passing attribute is the lowest among them all. He played nearly 15 minutes per game in the tourney but did not register a point. He was even with 2 PIMs, 4 hits, 3 shots and no shot blocks. Looks to be playing another season in juniors and then getting the call up to the SHL.

Xavier Laine – Laine is a solid all around winger who isn’t afraid to take the body. He scored 14 goals and had 11 assists in the SMJHL and was a huge +23 on the season with 38 PIMs. He took 80 shots and gave out 114 hits while blocking 6 shots in just over 14 minutes per game. For Austria, Laine saw nearly 17 minutes of action per game and he contributed a goal and an assist and was a +1. He had 4 penalty minutes, 27 hits, 9 shots and did not block any shots. He saw a lot of hockey from the second line and provided Austria with some fine play as the future looks bright for him. Will be playing at least one more season in juniors

Hunky Monkey – Firebirds Prince George Firebirds Firebirds– Monkey was coming off a tough regular season for Prince George as they came in last, but then shocked everyone by making it for the 4 Star Cup finals where they lost in 4 games. However, Monkey led his team in scoring with 21 assists and 27 points while scoring 6 goals. He was a -16 on the season with 56 PIMs and saw a lot of action on both the power play and penalty killing units. He took 69 shots while dishing out 78 hits and 52 shot blocks. He did get his first international point as he assisted on a goal in the last game of the round robin, but that was his only point of the tourney. His record in the tournament was 5-4-1 with a .917 save percentage and a 2.48 GAA along with one shutout. He was twice named the number one star of the game and set Austrian records for the most wins in the round robin and is now the winningest goaltender in Austria short IIHF history.

Announcements

With their available international assigned transfer, Austria is pleased to welcome JR95 (Jon Ross) from Canada. Ross is a playmaking center/left wing who we have kept an eye on all season long as he played for Vancouver in the SMJHL and has been an active member of the site throughout his young, but successful career. He will get a taste of international hockey right away, unlike some of his draft mates, as he will probably center our 4th line this tourney

Looking back at where Austria was just a couple of seasons ago and where they are now, it has been quite a journey. It has been a total group effort to get Austria to where it is now. To be able to get players like Brojled, Kinsler, Flamel, Bursyuk and the original Austrian, King, a bronze medal was quite an experience for everyone involved. The locker room is fun and great and filled with so many great people and I am glad to be a part of it.

As you consider what country you are going to sign up for, we hope you give Austria a hard, long look and will join us on a journey that certainly isn’t even close to hitting its peak yet. Plus, GAIA makes one heck of a strudel, so you certainly cant pass that up.

The teams exchanged goals in the second period as Hohenberg scored her first ever IIHF goal to put Austria up 3 to 1, but with just 23 seconds left in the second period, Sarantez pulled Ireland back to within one at 3 to 2 going into the third period. Canada would then score the only goal of the second period to set up a huge third period show down with the game tied at 1-1. Canada outshot Austria 13 to 8 in the second and they would outshoot Austria in the third as well 10 to 5, but one of those 5 Austrian shots would go in as Pellegrino scored his 5th goal of the round robin to give Austria a 2 to 1 win. Austria scored three goals in the second period as Bursyuk scored two of them, his 4th and 5th of the tourney while Pomery scored his first. Medal Round Recaps

Quarterfinals – Finland Finland vs Austria Austria – Finland swept Austria a couple of seasons ago in the round robin portion of the IIHF Season 27 portion, but the fans were rocking in Austria and the home team did not disappoint in the first two minutes of the game. Gan got things started just 39 seconds into the game and then just 44 seconds later, Pellegrino scored and Austria was up 2-0 not even 90 seconds into the game. The game settled down after that and with less than five minutes left in the first period, Jones scored for Finland to cut the lead in half. However, just over a minute after that, Kinsler scored to put Austria back up by two again, 3 to 1, heading into the second period. Austria outshot Finland 11 to 3. Finland held Austria to 7 shots in the second while getting 8 of their own, but neither team could score as the game went into the third period with Austria holding a 3 to 1 lead. Finland would cut the lead to 3 to 2 just under three minutes into the third period and you could feel the home crowd getting a little anxious. Wartooth took a holding minor shortly after that and just about a minute into the power play, King’s shot found the back of the net and Austria went back up by two goals again. With just over five minutes left in the game, Kinsler added his second of the game to make the final score 5 to 2 in favor of Austria as they move into the semi’s for the first time. Berger made 26 saves in the win. Kinsler had two goals and two assists to lead Austria while King had a goal and an assist. Charlyb’y was 11 for 18 in faceoffs.

However, about five minutes later, Wollker tied the score at 1-1 for Norway. Austria outshot Norway 8 to 7 in the first period as the game went into the second period tied. Austria scored the only two goals of the second period – one early in the period by Brojled and then by Brojled again late in the period as Austria took a two goal lead into the third period after outshooting Norway 15 to 5. As good as the second period was for Austria, the third period went in the opposite direction as Norway outshot Austria 16 to 2 and outscored them 3 to 1. Alexandersen and Rogers-Tanaka tied the score at 3-3 within the first five minutes of the third period to quiet the crowd quickly. Gan added his second goal of the game with about seven minutes left in third but Norway got a late power play chance and tied the score with just 54 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Just 29 seconds into overtime, Pellegrino takes a shot, but it hits the post for Austria. Austria not only gets one power play, but two power play chances, but cannot covert on either. Norway puts on some pressure past the halfway point of the overtime period and a shot by Wollker finds the back of the net and Norway wins 5 to 4 in overtime despite being outshot by Austria 9 to 3. Berger made 26 saves in the loss. Brojled and Gan each had two goals in the game while Flamel added three assists. Charlyby’ was 9 for 15 in faceoffs.

Bronze Medal Game – Canada Canada vs Austria Austria – Even though the Austrians did not make the gold medal the game, the fans were still pumped up to help the team win their first ever IIHF medal against the favorited Canadians. Just over four minutes into the game, Wachter put Austria up 1-0 with his second goal of the tourney. Canada would strike back about six minutes later as Kylrad tied the game at 1-1, but with less than two minutes left in the period, Vader scored his first ever IIHF goal to put Austria up 2 to 1 after one period. Toohoots assisted on both goals and both countries had 11 shots on goal each. The second period was tight defensively as Canada mustered 9 shots on goal compared to 8 for Austria, but it was the home team that scored the only goal of the period as Bursyuk netted another one to give Austria a 3 to 1 lead in the game. This is the second straight game Austria has taken a 3 to 1 lead into the third period. Austria took an early third period penalty and just over a minute into the power play and just four minutes into the period, Velevra made it a one goal game again. You could hear a pin drop in the arena for the next couple of minutes after the same thing happened the game before as Norway actually tied the game, but this one would be different. Austria would score three goals in a 12 minute span to win their first medal in international competition 6 to 2. Flamel scored a couple of minutes after the Canada goal, then Kinsler added one and Pellegrino finished the game off late with a power play goal. Shots were pretty close in the game as Canada had 30 and Austria had 29. Berger won his 9th game of the tournament by stopping 28 shots.
