S29 Championship Week S29
#46

TASK ONE: (worth 3 TPE)

Written: Pick any goal scored in the S29 playoffs so far and write the play by play for it. (150 words)

We've got 11 minutes left on the clock in this tied game between the Calgary Dragons and the Edmonton Blizzard, both at two goals. Faceoff in the Calgary zone between Esa Anrikkanen and Sasha Alexei Smirnov, Smirnov wins the puck to the defensemen as Windsor tries to make a breakout pass but is intercepted by Sachimo Zoidberg at the blueline, he passes it to Pedersen, who tries to move around Velvera but loses the puck in the process. Berger receives the puck but is also intercepted at the breakout pass. Windsor grabs the puck and tries to get it out, intercepted by Boychuk who tries to pass it to the slot, who gets intercepted by Windsor who also gets intercepted by Boychuk, he finally gets the pass through to Chris Johnson, pass to Esa, Esa's pass is intercepted as the Blizzard cross the redline and dump it in for the line change after some sloppy play in their own end

Hunter Wong comes out of the net and takes the puck and passes it to Esa who breaks the puck out to Pedersen who also dumps it in for the line change. Jackson Rogers-Tanaka attempts to get the puck out by is intercepted by the line-changed Jamie Hill who brings the puck in. To Bubba, to Pergher, to Alex Mack. Alex Mack takes a shot from the side as it misses the net and comes to Jamie Hill but she can't get a hold of it and the puck misses wide as well. Pergher takes the loose puck looking for a pass. Mack comes to the point as Randleman goes to the front of the net for a deflection. Mack one-times the puck from the point, Tipped in front by Randleman! IT'S IN! CALGARY TAKES THE LEAD WITH 10 MINUTES LEFT IN THE THIRD! CAN THEY HOLD ON!

TASK TWO: (worth 3 TPE)

Written: Choose a standout player in the regular season, and write 200 words on how they’ve measured up so far in the playoffs. Must include at least three stats.

Griffen Simons had a spectacular year, setting record high points for his career with 25 goals, 33 assists for a total of 58 points. He was a +13, had 1 minor penalty and 1 fight, and had 22 hits, with 23 shot blocks. He lead the Steelhawks in points in one of the best 1st lines in the SHL regular season with linemates Dean Colt and Rider Clitsome. Despite talks of retirement, it doesn't look like Simons is slowing down. In the playoffs, Hamilton becomes an unstoppable monster, Simons is definitely one of the reasons why. After the first two series, versus West Kendall and Toronto, Simons, in 12 games, has a total of 20 points, 9 goals, and 11 assists, as the first line of the Steelhawks has carried their team to the finals of the Challenge Cup. Simons has the most points in the playoffs, the next two players are his linemates Dean Colt and Rider Clitsome. Simons has played just as well, if not even better than his regular season point totals as his PP/20 in the regular season: 0.86 compared to his Playoff PP/20: 1.18 has almost a .30 difference which is insane when you think about it. Simons scores .3 more points in the playoffs than his regular season, at least in this playoffs.

TASK THREE: (worth 3 TPE)

Written: Choose what you think is a pivotal moment in any of the series’ so far, and flip it on it’s head. What happens if one team loses a game seven instead of wins? What happens if one goal isn’t scored, or is? How does the playoffs change, and how does the series change? (200 words.)

While some would say that the Toronto vs Hamilton OT goal was the playoff changing goal, I have a different one, the game winning goal by Randy Randleman to propel the Dragons to the finals. The Dragons have proven in game 1 that they can outscore the Steelhawks, but could the Blizzard have as well? What if Randleman's deflection goes wide, the Blizzard's 2nd line winger Ivan Koroviev (<a href='index.php?showuser=1827' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-62'>Alucard</a> ;Wink ) does the same to Calgary, except it doesn't miss the net, and he brings the Blizzard to the Finals? With one change, the finals predictions changes completely, the Blizzard was the best team in the West, and had the best player in the league in a player known as Theo Kane who tied the record set by Chris-McZehrl for most points in a single season at 67. While Theo may not have kept the same pace in the playoffs, Simons has, and he is the leading playoff scorer. Now it would be the two offensive juggernauts face off against each other, Hamilton vs Edmonton, Simons vs Kane. Calgary won game 1 with the heroics of Jamie Hill, would Edmonton have done the same? Would Nikolaus Scholz have been the hero of game one of the finals? We'll never know, unless JayWhy decides fuck it, and at the end of playoffs just says: Edmonton wins, go home losers

TASK FOUR: (worth 3 TPE)

Written: Your player has won the Challenge Cup! Write 200 words about what he or she does on his or her Cup day. (This applies even to players whose teams didn’t make the playoffs)

The New England Wolfpack have just pulled the biggest underdog move ever, after just barely coming into the playoffs after Toronto choked like it was playoff season, the SHL dubbed New England Softpack was going to face the Minnesota Chiefs, the president's trophy winner. New England swept them, then they won the Quarter finals in a dramatic game 7 triple OT winner. Finally the Wolfpack won in 6 games vs the Calgary Dragons, an almost personal battle for Patrikov Bure as he faced off against S24 1st Overall draftee Randy Randleman, a rivalry continued from the SMJHL, Vancouver vs Kelowna, the good old days. Today was Bure's cup day, he had received the cup from Roman Morenov in Russia where he attended a very quick 2 hour parade, lifting the puck to show to his Russian brethren. As tradition, he filled the cup with Vodka and drank it all in one gulp. He then flew to Vancouver where everything started for the Russian winger.

A couple familiar faces from his Whalers roots were training at the gym where he went to meet them. Retired Zach Hoover, Geoffrey Allen, Andrey Barbashev, Jack Durden were all training. Luke Fleming was also there with Hoover for obvious reasons. Although they wanted to touch the cup, Bure just shot it down with a quick, "This is mine"

They insisted so they decided to play Poker and the winner could touch the cup. Turns out Bure is really fucking shit at Poker and the cup got tossed around like a prostitute in Vegas. Oh well

Task 4

Winning a championship would be so unreal. Being drafted with Texas was an amazing experience, I always wanted to win with them because that team was the only team to believe in me. Once I got traded to Manhattan, it was different but then Los Angeles made me feel like home but it was also different as well. Texas will always be my home, I want to win a championship for them. *Season 30 arrives* Texas win the Challenge Cup, they are the champions once again!! Sterling Knight is one of the few players who get to hold the cup first. Later on in the summer, Knight brings the cup to Manhattan first where he was born. He had a great time with his family at lunch, went to go eat somewhere with his whole family while the cup was with him. They got to celebrate and take picture with it. Later at that day he has a party at his mansion, brings a lot of his old boys and plenty of girls to go around. Everyone is just having a good time right now, lots of drinking going around, Knight playing some beer pong with his boys, drinking out of the Challenge Cup. It was just an amazing night for him and bringing his old boys to celebrate.

Task One

We know you're excited, Dragons fans...your very own Randleman bobblehead, sponsored by Chicken Parm, You Taste So Good ™!

Task Two

Task Three
Undoubtedly, the most exciting moment of the playoffs so far was the series between the Calgary Dragons and the Edmonton Blizzard. A veritable Song of Ice and Fire, these two Western Conference powerhouses have won the last two cups, but only once could move on to the finals. Predictably, the series went to seven games, but game seven was one for the ages.

In front of a crazy excited Edmonton crowd, the Dragons dominated the first period of play, scoring the only two goals and putting up 12 shots to Edmonton's 5. In the second, Edmonton halved the deficit--and then pulled even four minutes into the third. There's no question that that arena was absolutely deafening after the Sarantez goal. You could hear people cheering "Re-peat, re-peat, re-peat..."

But they cheered too soon. Six minutes later, Randy Randleman, the incredibly gifted Welsh sniper who is the youngest member of the Dragons' core, scored a goal that would put the Dragons back in the lead, and the Blizzard away for good.

What if he hadn't, though? What if Aitto had saved that goal? Well, the Blizzard were definitely picking up momentum late in the game, outshooting the Dragons in both the second and third periods. It's totally possible that the game would've gone to overtime, at which point it could have gone either way. The Dragons have the offensive firepower; the Blizzard have top-notch defense and goaltending. In a game 7 OT situation, which one wins? Unfortunately, we don't get to find out, because Randleman put the nail in the coffin early. In doing so he did save lots of Dragons fans from some heart attacks, so...there is that.

Task Four

When the Wolfpack eventually win the Challenge Cup, it will be fitting that the Captain of #TeamPlayForFun will spend his cup day having as much fun as possible. Of course, because living well is the best revenge, it will start with him instagramming a picture of himself hugging the cup, with the caption "#PlayForFun #WinningIsFun". That taken care of, he will get to work spreading as much fun as possible--he'll take the cup to the Boston Pride Parade, because saying "if you can play, you can play" into a camera is all well and good, but unambiguous shows of support are much better.

Pride is a lot of fun, which is kind of the point--but then Makinen will take the cup to a local hospital, bringing it around to those who are ill and letting them in on the fun. Makinen has been quoted as saying, "I don't want to be just a hockey player; I want to be a good person," and his actions in the community are a sign of that. Sharing his cup day with people in hospital is just another way to give back to his city.

Finally, after he's spent most of the day spreading the fun around, Makinen will have some fun of his own. He'll have a private party, attended of course by Pack teammates, Knights teammates, Finland teammates, other friends, and family. Obviously, because it's Makinen, there will be a giant green bouncy house to go with the booze, because what possible better combination could there be than those two things? The private party will go into the early hours of the morning--but only soft attendees will be allowed.

Task One:
It's Game 4 of this series and we're in overtime as Toronto tries to close it out in a sweep while Minnesota is hanging on for dear life. Scherbluk moves the puck in the Minnesota zone and pulls up as other North Stars come across the line. He finds himself a lane and the veteran rips one towards the net. It's tipped by Falk just wide! Scherbluk gets the puck as it wraps around the boards and he one-times it wide! Barbashev grabs the puck and fires his own shot wide as the North Stars are really piling it on. The puck makes it way back to Scherbluk at the top of point, he rips a shot past the screen in front...

....and it's in! The veteran Scherbluk scores the game winner in overtime as the North Stars advance to the Eastern Conference Final! With a final of 3-2 Toronto surprises the world by upsetting the best team in the SHL this season!

TASK ONE: (worth 3 TPE)

Written: Pick any goal scored in the S29 playoffs so far and write the play by play for it. (150 words)

4. Minnesota Chiefs , Jamie Hawkins 1 (Richard D'amour) at 13:29 (Game 3, Minnesota V. Toronto)

There was a buzz in the late night air as deafening shouts from the Minnesota home crowd filled Richard D'amour's ears as he took his shift late in the second. This series had been going very poorly for Minnesota, but that didn't stop the slew of people from filing in each home game, proudly displaying their dark green jerseys and cheering on the home team. D'amour lined up and took the puck straight off the faceoff, whirling around behind Robert Andersson. Skating up the left side of the ice, D'amour smashed the puck up the boards to Jamie Hawkins, who had been waiting a step behind the Toronto defense, a rookie error. Hawkins strode into the offensive zone, skated right into the slot, and snapped a high wrister past the Toronto netminder's blocker.

As they were skating back to the bench and congratulating one another, D'amour heard it:

"Your MINNESOTA CHIEFS PLAYOFF GOAL. Scored by forward JAMIE HAWKINS. Assisted by Defenseman RICHARD D'AMOUR. at 13:29 of the second period!"

TASK TWO: (worth 3 TPE)

Written: Choose a standout player in the regular season, and write 200 words on how they’ve measured up so far in the playoffs. Must include at least three stats.

If there has ever been a player that has given his all this season, that would be Griffin Simmons, for the Hamilton Steelhawks, who are still currently going through a long, tough playoff run, having just narrowly beaten the Toronto North Stars. He spent this season breaking his own records, with a high of 25 goals and 33 assists, boasting a whopping 58 points throughout the season, a spectacular performance. I'm sure Simmons was hoping to see this transition into playoff success for both himself and his team, and so far that appears to be the case as he is boasting a .75 G/gp, and 5.67 sht/gp, meaning that his shooting percentage is a very impressive 13%. Now there is only one question left for Steelhawks players and fans alike; can Griffin Simmons hold this production to a Challenge Cup victory? Can Griffin Simmons continue to live up to the hype? Is he overhyped? How much is Simmons contract going to look like after his current one expires? Will he return to Hamilton? More on the current state of the challenge cup at 10. For now, this has been David Davidson for ESPN, back to you Colin.

"THE MINNESOTA CHIEFS HAVE DONE IT! THEY HAVE BEATEN THE TORONTO NORTH STARS IN OVERTIME ONCE MORE!"

D'amour thought about all the events that had happened in the past few days; Those two overtime wins were way too close for comfort, as the series was. There would be league spread embarassment in the event that Minnesota lost this series, so it was truly a winner take all situation, and D'amour and the Chiefs were NOT going to settle for a second place finish.
GM Daniel Merica was furious. He rarely came by the locker room before or after games anymore, as he was usually standing benchside hours before the game began, angrily chewing gum and examining his roster. He looked like he hadn't slept for days, and most likely wouldn't until this series ended. This was a test for him just as it was for us, the players. His reputation as a GM was being put to the test here after a great regular season.

As the team was stepping off the bench after their last overtime win, he tapped Andersson with his stick. "Your girlfriend's gonna hate the fact that I have to keep the beard a little longer eh?" Andersson gave D'amour a hard tap in the shins with his stick and grinned stupidly at him, pulling at his coarse brown scruff. "Yeah how do you think your mother is going to feel?"

TASK FOUR: (worth 3 TPE)

Written: Your player has won the Challenge Cup! Write 200 words about what he or she does on his or her Cup day. (This applies even to players whose teams didn’t make the playoffs)

"Nah dude trust me, it'll make for an awesome photo opportunity!" D'amour looked at Robert Andersson stupidly, as if he was out of his mind. "Well, are you booking the plane tickets to Antarctica?"

Three days later and here they were now, skating carefully on thin sheets of ice, in nothing but thin Chiefs T-Shirts and worn out jeans. "I think my testicles have reascended.... Why did I let you talk me into this?" D'amour shivered once again as he brought the cup up to his midsection, barely managing a goofy looking smile as a photographer snapped photos of him with the cup. "Don't lie to me, you're having fun." Andersson, the natural born Swede, was obviously having a ball, skating figure eights in the thing ice. "Bringing the cup here was a fucking horrible idea." The photographer gave D'amour the thumbs up, and he passed the cup to Andersson, who began his photo op. D'amour began skating circles trying to warm himself up, and that was when the helicopter flew in. "Right on time!" Andersson took the cup and skated over to where the helicopter now hovered a few feet above ground, the reporter in tow. D'amour simply laughed and skated over to the helicopter, hopping in. "Where are we headed?"

"Jamie Hawkins' place. His turn next after all."

Task 4
The city of Saint Petersburg hadn't seen a parade this big on the Nevsky Prospekt since the USSR days. One of their own won the Challenge Cup. Everybody was going crazy, even skipping work to attend the event. They were even thinking of renaming the Winter Palace the Maximova Palace. Maria thought it was a bit much but she couldn't speak against the entire population. I mean, Ivan Koroviev had a street named after him in his native city after he won the Championship so she could settle for the same thing. An entire palace was maybe a bit too pretentious. Anyway, that parade was some pretty crazy shit. With jets, fireworks, jugglers, tanks and stuff. The Russians went all in here because they had no other parade to organize. While they'd do something similar for Ales Smirnov in his hometown, nobody knows where it's located so instead they just decided to put his face on every Smirnov Ice bottle.

But as her alarm rang, Maria woke up and realized she was not hugging the Cup, but her cat, General Mittenov, who looked most displeased. The fat ginger animal gave her a couple of slaps, leaving scars on her face. She'd later pretend she got them fighting a bear while camping back home.

Task One
We’re at the midway point of overtime period number one in game three of the Eastern Conference quarter finals. The North Stars are currently up 2-0 in the series and trying to keep the pressure on the favorite Chiefs here in overtime.
The Toronto North stars are crashing the net with Barbashev and Eriksson getting shots on goal but they are not getting through due to Goody blocking them. The Stars are all over the Chiefs mid-way through the first overtime period. Wartooth finally gets a shot on Andersson and Andersson stops it, and the Stars crash the net!
Andersson takes a whack at Wartooth after he crashed the net and the ref did not like that. But they are only calling Andersson after the North Stars totally crashed into him!
The Stars are now on the powerplay.
The Stars win the draw and set up the power play.
The Stars keep playing it to the point for big shot Scherbluk.
Scherbluk rips one…
ITS IN THE NET!!! Goal Goal Goal
THE NORTH STARS WIN GAME THREE IN OVERTIME, AND WILL TRY TO GO FOR THE SWEEP IN GAME FOUR!!

THE CHIEFS AND THEIR FANS ARE STUNNED.

Task Two
Theo Kane was one of the best players in the SHL regular season he scored 31 goals and 36 assists for 67 points in 50 games. His shot percentage was really high in the regular season which was 13.42 percent which could be an indication of whether or not he could sustain it for the playoffs. He also has 204 hits which is pretty good considering he is a skill player. His regular season was simply amazing and Kane has established himself as one of the SHL’s best and he still will likely be next season as well. After having an amazing regular season you would think Kane would light it up in the playoffs, so let’s take a look and see. In the Playoffs for the Blizzard Kane had 5 goals and 5 assists for 10 points in 12 games. His shooting percentage was pretty high in the playoffs too at 9.62 percent which is pretty high but not as high as his regular season one. He also had 39 hits in those games which is fairly decent for a player of his ability. Kane kept his physical presence like he did in the regular season. It looks like Kane’s amazing regular season did not translate to an amazing post season. The Blizzard ended up losing to the Calgary Dragons in seven games. So was Kane a product of his high shooting percentage? We will see next season.

Task Three
The pivotal moment in the Chiefs-North Stars first round series was in game two when the North Stars pounded on the Chiefs 6-1 and went up 2-0 in the series. Prior to this game the Chiefs were only down 1-0 in the series and nothing to worry about really. They also got pounded in game one but that should have been a one off, but instead they got pounded again. So if we turned this game on its head and the Chiefs came out with the win how would this series have been different? The Chiefs would have had all the momentum back and probably wouldn’t have been swept. I think they would have pulled it out and won the series. The Chiefs are a great team and getting their offense going in game two would have changed this series completely. Also would have liked to see the Chiefs defense perform a bit better along with Andersson. The Chiefs were a great regular season team and needed confidence in the playoffs. Game two would’ve been a springboard to winning that series. Instead the Chiefs decided to pack it in and got smashed in game two again. Which then led to them getting swept with two consecutive overtime losses.

Task Four
First Bjornsson would obviously attend the parade in downtown Portland with the Cup. His next stop would be to go to Kelowna his second home where he played his Junior Hockey. He would take it to the Knights home arena and have a party with all the fans. He would set up a big festival for that everyone in Kelowna could enjoy with carnival rides and other fun things the family can do. Other than Kelowna he would take it back home to the Czech Republic where he grew up. That is where he would have his party with his friends and immediate family. He would also take the Cup to his hometown of Gavle, Sweden where he was born. He still has some family in Sweden so that would be somewhere he would take the Cup. His person day with the cup would also include having Lucky Charms inside the cup with some nice milk. He would also pour chocolate milk in the cup and drink from it because Bjornsson loves his chocolate milk. If and When the Admirals win the cup, Christoffer Bjornsson will have a lot of fun with it and will travel a lot with it.

1) The score here is 4-4 late in the third period. The Riot have really stepped it up this period and just scored a goal thanks to the relentless hard work of Sekkusu Gan. It definitely appears Calgary and Seattle will go to OT in this fifth game of the series.

Oferyn Martell retrieves the puck from the corner and makes his way up the ice. He finds Alex Mack who skates around King with ease and now they have some room to work with. Mack skates in and feeds Jagr. Schnitinfritz Jagr skates in, one-on-one with Tsizling, and fires a hard wrister through the defenders leg and................IT IS IN! Calgary fires right back and has taken the lead once again! HOLY MOLY what a shot by Jagr! Osgoode definitely did not see it but you cannot take any credit away from that ridiculous shot.

That is Jagr’s first of the playoffs and what a time to score it. The Dragons are now just 1:12 away from moving onto the next round.

-171 Words

2) Theo Kane was easily the most productive player offensively this season. He led the league in goals with 31 and points with 67, in just 50 games. He outscored every other player by at least 9 points and will definitely be bringing in a good amount of hardware at the upcoming SHL Awards Show. For now though, Kane is more focused on helping his Blizzard win another championship.

The Blizzard currently are tied with the Dragons 3-3 in the Western Conference finals, as the Alberta rivals look to cement their place in the Challenge Cup Finals. While Theo Kane has been one of their best contributors, it is hard not to be a little let down after such a strong regular season campaign. Kane currently has 5 goals and 10 points in 12 games. While you do expect his production to drop slightly given the increase in competition, a drop from 1.16 PPG to 0.83 PPG is not that small.

Additionally, Kane also averaged 4.02 hits per game with 204 in 50 games (5th in the SHL) during the regular season. While you can understand points dropping slightly, with how physical the playoffs is in comparison, you would expect Theo to ramp up his physicality even more. Unfortunately, he has just 39 hits in 12 games, which is just 3.25 hits per game. While recording 10 points and 39 hits in 12 games is hardly bad or even close to poor play, you do expect players like Kane to step up their game at such a crucial time of the year. If the Blizzard want to get past the Dragons and go on to win the Challenge Cup, they will need Theo to do exactly that.

-286 Words

3) The Hamilton Steelhawks are up 3-2 in this first round matchup with the West Kendall Platoon, but the Steelhawks have certainly been dominated in this game. After such a great last three games, the Steelhawks should have all the momentum but it seems like a reversal of roles in this one.

The score is 3-3 in OT and the Platoon have badly outshot Hamilton 38-24 after regulation. Martins Ziepins skates up the ice, now just short of five minutes into the extra session. Zarins is with him and he is fed the puck as he makes a quick move and fires it over to Colt! DEAN COLT SKATES IN ALL ALONE!! BUT HE FIRES THE SHOT JUST WIDE! The puck rolls along the boards and is picked up by Zallerras Szlerchek. The dynamic forward skates by the side winger and has lots of room. He lifts his leg and shimmies past the defender and now finds himself practically alone. He fakes left before lifting it top shelf on the backhand!!!!!!! IT IS IN!! The Platoon have won and have stolen momentum back! The West Kendall Platoon have forced game seven and Toronto looks deflated. This might be the worst possible result for the North Stars. They fall just short and now need to recover mentally for a very difficult game seven against the crafty team from West Kendall.

4) Gunnar Rask has brought home his first Challenge Cup as a new member of the Seattle Riot. The Swedish forward, who has been touted as one of the league’s top prospects, had a successful rookie campaign with Manhattan before being traded as a part of a major package for VLAD McZehrl. What will he do when the Challenge Cup comes home to Sweden?!

“I think I just want to have a really nice gathering. I have a lot of friends and family, some old coaches and some old teammates who have been there every step of the way. These are the people who helped me get where I am today and for that, they deserve this day just as much as I do.”

Those were the words of Gunnar Rask on the night they won the cup, and today that is exactly what he did. Around thirty people showed up to Gunnar’s new place in Sweden where he hosted them for a barbecue and some entertainment as well. Mainly it was a chance to catch up with friends and family. Afterwards, he went to the old bookstore he used to work at to sign autographs for any public who wanted to come take a picture with Gunnar and the Challenge Cup.

Esa Anrikkanen is the best player in the SHL. He has done been the leader all season for the Calgary Dragons and has continued this play in the S29 SHL playoffs. This team will win and lose on the back of Anrikkanen and if his play thus far in the playoffs is any indication that means great things for the Calgary Dragons. Lets take a closer look at how his play has been this season

Points Per Game
During the regular season Esa Anrikkanen led the Calgary Dragons with 53 points in 50 games, good for just over 1.0 points per game. Anrikkanen has kept this play up in the playoffs and has 11 points in 11 games thus far, good for 1.0 points per game. I expect the superstar to ramp it up in the finals and propel this team to another Challenge Cup victory.

One area of his game that has changed during the playoffs is his hitting. Anrikkanen averaged over 4 hits per game during the regular season, tallying 212 in 50 games, but thus far in the playoffs he has 30 his in 11 games which is just under 3 hits per game. It seems that Anrikkanen has decided to try and save his energy he would usually spend hitting guys and instead try to use it for late game pushes for goals. While other players are tired from throwing their bodies around Esa the wily vet has gas in the tank to help the Dragons pull out late victories.

Time on Ice
A model of consistency, Esa Anrikkanen logs huge minutes for the Calgary Dragons. During the regular season he was on the ice for an average time of 23.77 minutes each game. Now deep in the playoffs Esa has continued chugging along with those huge minutes averaging 23.88 minutes of time on the ice per game. These huge minutes allow other skill players like Alex Mack, Jamie Hill, and Shane Gagner to be fresh when they hit the ice and this has proved to be a huge asset for the Calgary Dragons.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Game 7 - SHL Western Conference Finals - 9:50 to go in the game - Calgary vs Edmonton tied 2-2
Alex Mack carries the puck into the Edmonton zone and lets the shot go, but it's blocked by Friedrich Müller. Jamie Hill picks up the lose puck, she takes a quick shot but misses wide and Bubba Nuck is there to gather the lose puck in the corner. Nuck throws a beautiful saucer pass to the far point towards the tape of Alex Mack - OH! Theo Kane gets his stick on it a split second before it gets to Mack and Kane is behind him in the blink of an eye! Kane has a breakaway! He's coming in at full speed on Wong, Kane fakes, and takes - SCORESSSSSSSS! THEO KANE WITH THE INCREDIBLE PLAY!!! Edmonton Blizzard 3! Calgary Dragons 3! Ten minutes to go in game seven and this Calgary crown is in a stunned silence! The Blizzard have the lead! Can the lizzard hold on for the last 10 minutes of this game and punch their ticket to the Challenge cup?!

The teams come out for the ensuing faceoff and the Dragons look deflated. A late goal on a turnover that looked to be a fantastic chance for the Dragons has sucked the life out of this Dragons team. Karpotsov easily wins the draw and now it's on the tape of Koroviev who dances past the Dragons defenders WOW what a move! Calgary looked dumbfounded there and Koroviev goes bar down that's a 2 goal lead just like that folks! This may be the end for the Calgary Dragons Challenge Cup dreams!

Task 1

It’s a tied game with 32 seconds left on the clock. If the Whalers can hang on and force overtime, there’s a chance that they could forestall a Scarecrows victory and take this series to game 6. The last thing the Whalers need right now is a penalty, but a whistle blows and Jon Ross takes a seat for tripping. If this St. Louis power play does its job, the Scarecrows will be hoisting the Four Star Cup tonight.

As the seconds tick down, Alexander Charlyb’y wins a face-off versus Charlie Conway in the Whalers zone. He knocks it back to DarryL Landry, who passes to Frans Erichsen. Erichsen passis to Dos Diablo, who slaps a hard one-timer toward the net, but it’s blocked by Pablo Biznette. Vincenzo Matteo grabs the rebound and fires off another shot that goes wide. Landry goes to the boards to collect the puck, and takes a shot from a wicked angle. And it’s slips behind the right shoulder of the Whalers goalie, for the championship winning goal!

Task 2

Mikael Talo, top line center for the Kelowna Knights, had an incredible season. He was 4th overall in league wide scoring in both the regular season and the post season, and along with linemate Mikko Linna, formed one of the SMJHL’s most productive duos.

In comparing his regular season performance with his post-season performance, Talo seems to have played comparably well in both. He was second in scoring for the Knights in both the regular season and the post season. In the regular season, he put up a total of 48 points (18 goals and 30 assists), just one behind Linna. In his 11 playoff games, he put up 16 points (6 goals and 10 assists), the same total as Linna, though lighter on goals. This is the same number of points as St. Louis’ Frans Erichsen and only two less than league playoff scoring leader Sebastian Strange, also of St. Louis, despite the fact that both played five more postseason games than Talo.

He took a lot more shots in the regular season--200, second overall in the league--and his shot percentage reflects that. In the regular season, 9% of his shots found their way to the back of the net. In the post-season, 19.35% of his 31 shots hit their mark.

His +/- rating was +7 in both the regular season and the post season. In the regular season, his PIM was 20, and in the post-season it was 4.

[w/c 241]

Task 3

The pivotal moment in the SMJHL playoffs was the tripping penalty taken by Jon Ross in the dying minutes of game five versus the St. Louis Scarecrows in the Four Star Cup Finals. This penalty led to the cup winning goal scored by St Louis’ DarryL Landry with less than forty seconds left on the clock. Had Ross not taken this penalty, Landry’s goal probably would not have happened. The last-minute power play gave Landry the opportunity he needed to seal the Whalers fate. However, had he not scored this goal, the Whalers would have been able to force an overtime period and may have been able to take the series to game six. Going into game five, the scarecrows were leading the series 3-1. Taking into account their regular season performance versus the Whalers regular season performance, the Scarecrows probably still would have walked away with the cup. This being said, the Whalers were able to rob the Knights of their chances at facing the Scarecrows in the finals by forcing a game 6 and then a game 7. The Whalers seemed to excel this post-season when the pressure was on. I stand by my assertion that the series would have ended with a Scarecrow victory, but it certainly would have been a much more exciting series.

Task 1 - PbP (150 words)

7. Hamilton Steelhawks , Griffin Simons 11 (Martins Ziepins, Rider Clitsome) at 2:57

The overtime has just kicked off and it’s all Hamilton at this point. They’ve had their 2 goal lead established in the first completely wiped away, and even went down by one, but managed to find a late tier to bring them to this epic ending, the Toronto North Stars and the Hamilton Steelhawks battleing off in game 7, overtime!

Harter has made a couple of good saves in the opening minute, and Joe McKeil had the game on his stick, but shot the puck wide. The North Stars tried generating a chance, but the Hamilton players look poised to end this, and end this right away.
Harter with the save on Clitsome! He gets his own rebound, banks it off the boards to Ziepins, he throws it on net, SCORES! It looked like it changed directions, I think it was Griffin Simons who got a piece of it, and sends his team to the finals!

Task 2 - Standout player (200 words)

The Hamilton Steelhawks have been depending on the superstar quality they’ve got in their offense for a few seasons now, and when you think of point producers for the Hawks, 2 players come to mind. Griffin Simons and Rider Clitsome.
So it should come to no surprise that this dynamic duo is topping the charts in scoring in this years Challenge Cup Playoffs. Simons has managed 9 goals and 20 points while Clitsome has also managed to put the puck in the net 9 times, and has 9 helpers to bring him to 18 points. They are also head and shoulders above the rest of the league in plus minus, with 13 for Simons and 11 for Clitsome. They have been playing unreal minutes, just over 28 min for Simons and just over 29 min for Clitsome and are also 1-2 in shots on goal. Clitsome leads with 79 shots on goal, while Simons is second with 68. To add to all these amazing stats that the duo has brought to the Hamilton Steelhawks, they are also extremely disciplined, Simons having never entered the penalty box, and Clitsome only have a single minor to his name.

There is so much these 2 players have brought to the Hawks not only in recent seasons, not only in this past regular season, but they are also the 2 MVPs heading into hte finals of this year’s Challenge Cup Playoffs.

Task 3 - Pivotal moment (200 words)

There have been so many pivotal moments in these playoffs, both conference finals going the distance to game 7. However, one that really marks this year’s final is the game 7 between the Edmonton Blizzard and the Calgary Dragons.

The Dragons pulled off the vicotry, and head to the finals to face the Hamilton Steelhawks. The hawks were relieved, becasue in the 2 games that these 2 faced, the Haws won both in regulation, out scoring the Dragons 6-2 in the proccess. So the Hawks, without getitng over-confident, can feel good about their matchup in the finals, knowing they have already defeated the Dragons twice, and in addition to that, haven’t lost to the Dragons this season.

However, what if Edmonton would have won that pivotal game 7? The Hawks went 0-2 against the Blizzard this season, the exact opposite record then theirs with the Dragons. They also lost their games by being outscored by a combined 9-2. So a huge sigh of relief was made by the Steelhawks organisation when they found out Calgary would be their final oppoenent, because it gives them a huge advantage in the mental status before game 1. Being able to head into a series with the thoughts of “we can beat these guys” is always much more successful than that lingering voice buried as far back as you can bury it that is ithcing, and screaming “We’ve never defeated these guys”.

Task 4 - What do you do with the cup? (200 words)

They Challenge Cup is coming home baby! After this amazing victory, we’re taking this baby back to the hometown fans, and then we’ll each get our day with the cup!

For my day, I plan on taking it back home to Montreal and having the family and friends over for a sweet bar b q at my place. I’ll warm up the pool and get some nice steaks on the grill. We can have fun in the sun, take turns taking pictures with the cup, and even drink out of it!

But I want to do as much as I can with my day, so I’m going to get up real early to get as much in as I can. I want to go the arena where I first played hockey, where I learnt alll the basic skills a kid needs to learn, and set up a little half day with the fans. Maybe even get a small fundraiser going for the arena, to try and improve the facility for the kids.

Late at night, after the bar b q is done, I would love to take a drive with the cup and my kids, head up to Mount Royal and just enjoy the beautiful view of the city, with my beautiful family and my beautiful trophy!

TASK ONE:

And after an icing call against the Knights our second period play here in Game 1 of the SMJHL playoffs resumes. Dominique wins the face-off against Evgeny Yakikov in the Knights zone. Birkeland with the puck as Dominique is hit by Dabkowski. Pass by Birkeland intercepted by Dahlssen in the neutral zone and we’re back the other way. Dahlssen tries to pass but it’s intercepted by Dominique and dumped into the Mammoths zone for Dahlssen to retrieve.

He makes for the pass but Landvik is there. Goddard intercepts her attempted pass to Bent and heads up the ice, but Birkeland gets the stick on a giveaway and sends it back to Landvik in the offensive zone. She passes but Yakikov is there. Bent is on Yakikov’s heels and swipes the puck out from under him as he lets it go, attempting to send it up the ice but landing on Dahlssen’s stick instead. Dahlssen tries to send it back to Yakikov, but Landvik snags it and sends it up the ice to Birkeland on the doorstep, who SHOOTS… but it’s stopped by Andrews without a rebound, and both teams will make a change.

Talo wins the face-off against Stamkos Jr. in the Mammoths zone and passes to Linna, who shoots…

AND SCORES. Goal

MIKKO LINNA WITH HIS FIRST GOAL OF THE PLAYOFFS. 41 seconds into the second, the Knights are up TWO NOTHING.

TASK TWO:

Rookie defenceman Cara Hohenberg quietly shored up the Kelowna Knights’ blue line throughout the regular season, providing a less physical but no less critical role in her second-pair partnership with Fedor Shirobokov. She notched a total of 30 points throughout the season (10 goals, 20 assists), as well as a respectable 55 shots blocked. Though she only landed a total of 14 hits in 50 games to her d-partner’s 114, she also registered only 6 PIM on a team who was often bit in the ass by their lack of discipline. Her puck moving abilities and two-way play made her a crucial part of the Knights game. Cara finished the season ranked sixth amongst all SMJHL rookies.

Hohenberg did not disappoint in the playoffs, leading all Knights rookies in points with 10 in 11 games. Her play remained consistent as she got in the way of 4 shots, doled out one hit, and did not take any penalties. Cara was ranked sixth amongst all defencemen in the SMJHL playoffs, behind stars like Vancouver’s Pablo Biznette, Four Star Cup winners Danny Foster, Joe Kerr, and Kelly Rivet, and her own veteran teammate Mia Landvik. She dropped only one place on the SMJHL rookies leaderboard from the regular season to the playoffs.

TASK THREE:

Game 7 of the Western Conference Final between the Kelowna Knights and the Vancouver Whalers saw Beau Bent score his first goal of the playoffs on the powerplay, just 39 seconds into the game. That goal was answered by Vancouver’s Dahlstrom just four seconds later. But what if Theodore Graham kept his stick to himself and never got called for hooking at 0:23?

Though this scenario might seem to take away an advantage the Knights surely wanted so early in a crucial game, the lost opportunity for Birkeland, Dominique, and Bent to combine on their powerplay goal is also a lost opportunity for the Whalers to get angry. Without that goal, Dahlstrom loses that tiny bit of rage he was using as motivation, and he never scores his second goal.

That gives the first goal of the game to the Whalers with Kubrak’s goal at 3:34. While the Knights could be discouraged by this, Landvik would never let such an opportunity to crush the dreams of her opponents pass her by. Her goal assisted by Talo at 4:07 remains the same. Assuming Kilgore’s goal-scoring play at 16:26 also remains the same, the first period ends with the score 2-1 Vancouver.

The Knights are still at a disadvantage, but their goalie Laukkanen will only have let 2 goals in rather than 3, and the Knights would be looking to tie it up with a roomy forty minutes to do so. The elimination of Graham’s first period penalty changes the tone of the game and allows for the Knights to bring their best game to the table. Considering the Knights’ best game posted them a 6-1 regular season record against the Whalers and got them up 3-1 in the series, it’s safe to say that they likely would’ve made their way to the Four Star Cup Final.

TASK FOUR:

In a glorious world where the Kelowna Knights won the Four Star Cup Final, Mia Landvik spent her Cup Day in her hometown of Hell, Norway. In attendance at the celebrations were her parents and a large number of her Knights teammates, as well as a few of her IIHF teammates. As is the way of the many tourists Landvik saw come through her town in her youth, she took pictures with her crew and the Cup in front of every sign with the word “Hell” on it.

There’s not much to do in Hell except say you were there, but there is a beach, so most of the day was spent just hanging out by the water. Landvik came down to the waterfront with the Cup already filled with candy and then, somehow, ate literally all of it until it was only wrappers. No one is quite sure where she puts all that sugar, but the entire crew knew better than to question her or do anything but duck for cover once her sugar high hit.

Twenty minutes later, Landvik chased Mikko Linna through the sand while carrying the Cup, eventually catching him and dumping the wrappers over his head. It was a bad idea, considering she then had to pick up all the wrappers and put them in the actual garbage. Linna seemed to think that was hilarious until Landvik pouted at him enough that he gave in and helped her.

TASK ONE: (worth 3 TPE)

Written: Pick any goal scored in the S29 playoffs so far and write the play by play for it. (150 words)

Welcome back, everyone, hope you didn't leave your couch for too long. Seattle and Calgary are ready to jump back into the action. If you are just tuning in, Seattle has just scored the equalizer with a minute and a half to go. The Riot really just controlled the play during that attack, they kept generating shot after shot, it was only a matter of time before one found twine. Sean Leonidas faces off against Jagr. Jagr wins it back to Randy Randleman, who dumps it into the offensive zone. He and Riot winger David Benson rush for the puck. Benson picks up the loose puck, but doesnt have a chance to move it before being absolutely hammered by Randleman! Oh my, the fans in the top row are going to feel that one. Oferyn Martell scoops up the puck and gets the attack started for Calgary. Martell sends it to winger Alex Mack, who immediately sends it back to the point to Martell. Martell goes tick-tack to Mack, who tries to enter into the slot. But then he sets up Jagr with a beautiful no look back hand pass! Jagr winds up, blasts a shot, and IT GOES IN!!! SCHNITINFRITZ JAGR SCORES!!! Just 19 seconds after being tied up, Jagr scores the go ahead goal and gives Calgary the lead with a minute twelve remaining! What a play by the Dragons!

TASK TWO: (worth 3 TPE)

Written: Choose a standout player in the regular season, and write 200 words on how they’ve measured up so far in the playoffs. Must include at least three stats.

Esa Anrikkanen is a name that is very familiar throughout the SHL. The poster boy for Calgary was a huge key to their regular season success, leading the team with 1.06 PPG. So far in the playoffs he is tied for the team lead in points, with 16 points in 16 games, but something has been off. Lets look at three stats that show something is off with Esa's game:

Hits/Hits Taken Ratio
in the regular season, Esa was a physical force to be reckoned with. Averaging a 1.66 Hits/Hits Taken ratio, Anrikkanen was laying players on their ass more than he was sitting on it. In the playoffs so far, he has produced a 1.47 Hits/Hits Taken ratio. Its not a huge difference, but it shows that he has been tiring throughout this whole playoff run

Shooting Percentage
Esa has never been a high percentage shooter, he is more in the mold of "if you keep generating shots, eventually one will go in". During the regular season that philosophy worked out for him, giving him 21 goals and a 8.79% shooting percentage. So far in this playoffs, Esa has only three goals and a 4.76% save percentage. clearly something is off in his shot.

Shot Totals
Esa led the Dragons in shots with 239 in the regular season. He is currently in third on the team with 61 shots in the playoffs. Whether this is Anrikkanen or a result of Calgary's game plan, it is something that could be a problem for the team moving forward.

Game seven of the Western Conference finals was an incredibly stressful one between the last two cup champions. With Calgary leading Edmonton 3-2 with three seconds left in the third period, Mark Longford fires a shot at the net. Now we know that Hunter Wong stopped the shot and covered it up, leading to the end of the game and Calgary moving on to the cup finals. But what if the shot had gone in, and Edmonton won the game in OT?

Edmonton would be playing in the finals against Hamilton right now if that were the case, and i believe if that happened we would already be looking at our back to back challenge cup champs. Why do i say this? Because Hamilton has some of the best scorers in the game on their team. Despite this, Calgary has at the very least kept pace with them. Hunter Wong has performed admirably, but has a .905 save percentage after averaging 28.25 shots faced per game. Edmonton's goalie, Jakub Aittokallio, has had a .908 save percentage after averaging 30.08 shots faced per game. Hamilton's top line is dangerous, and it must be contained at all costs, and that starts with the goalie. I think that this slight difference could have had the cup back in Edmonton.

TASK FOUR: (worth 3 TPE)

Written: Your player has won the Challenge Cup! Write 200 words about what he or she does on his or her Cup day. (This applies even to players whose teams didn’t make the playoffs)

So you want me, Richard C. Motherfuckin' Hocolate, to plan out my Cup day? well, after I make the greatest save in SHL history to secure the Calgary Dragons get the cup back, I'll just be waiting for my cup day. First thing I'll do with the cup is eat cereal out of it for breakfast, because lets be honest, that's what like everyone wants to do with it. After that, I'll bang my smoking hot wife because when you're a highly paid handsome cup champion goalie you get to have sex whenever you want. After that, everything is just gravy. Naturally I'll go to the amusement park. Have you ever seen someone take a league championship trophy onto a roller coaster before? I didn't think so. The next logical thing is to fly down to whatever city we beat in the finals, rent a limo, stand out of the top of the limo hoisting the cup, and shout "You suck" and "Your city is track". You know, the normal stuff. After that, I'm going to fly home and have the greatest beer pong tournament ever! Just imagine how great of a game it would be if you had to bounce the ball into the challenge cup? After that, I would probably just pass out on the couch and cuddle with the Cup. Hell, its prettier than some of the girls I've hooked up with when I was drunk
