Another disappointing showing from the Vancouver Whalers offense and a fantastic performance from Colorado goaltender Ekaterina Rudnikova leaves the Whalers seeking answers within their scoring.

The Colorado Mammoth have entered this season and surprised. While dipping to last in the West for a short while this season. The Mammoth have since seen a resurgence and have surprised much of the SMJHL. After an abysmal S30 season which saw a first round playoff exit and one of the worst records in the SMJHL for a significant amount of time. The S31 Mammoths look like a completely new team. They are an offensive powerhouse in a league filled with scorers and boast one of the best goaltenders currently playing. The Vancouver Whalers are bit of a quandry. At times they look like easily the best team in the SMJHL. Their defensive and goaltending play is probably the cream of the crop in the SMJHL but they struggle to find the back of the net with their forwars. Which can be a bit confusing considering that they currently ice some of the most deadly scoring threats in the SMJHL in Jon Ross, Conklin Owen and Steven Stamkos Jr.

The first period was not oring. The Colorado Mammoth came out firing. Peppering goaltender Maximilian Wehner with 14 shots in 20 minutes. The Goalie of the Year Candidate held strong and let nothing into the net. But the Vancouver Whalers were showing their inability to generate shots by only testing Rudnikova 6 times in the entire period. The Whalers looked like they were lethargic and the Mammoth looked ready to play. Surprisingly the period ended 0-0.

Second period play between these two teams bogged down even more. The entire period saw a total of 13 shots but what it lacked in shots it made up for in goals. Vancouver defender Ludwig Koch Schroder opened the scoring 10 minutes into the 2nd period with a laser of a shot that beat Rudnikova. Not long after the Mammoth defense responded with a beautiful goal from Maverick O'Dooley, leveling the game at one each. After an interference minor from Whalers defensive defender Brynjar Tusk, Mammoths star defeseman Matthew Leetch fired a fastball right through Maximilian Wehner to give the Mammoth a 2-1 lead. That is all they would need in this game.

The third period was much better for the Vancouver offense. Generating 12 shots throughout the period put pressure on goaltender Ekaterina Rudnikova, but unfortunately for the Whalers none of the pucks could hit the twine and Rudnikova proved again why she is one of the best goaltenders in the SMJHL.
