Game 39: Prince George Firebirds @ Halifax Raiders

Game 39 would pit a streaking and frankly red-hot Prince George Firebirds team up against an equally hot Halifax Raiders team. With the regular season coming to a close fairly shortly, the possible playoff matchups are finally starting to take shape in either conference. It’s looking to be a two team race in the Western Conference between Kelowna and Prince George and likewise in the Eastern Conference as Halifax and Montreal are battling for the top spot. Prince George would get off to a great start in this game as they would score twelve minutes into the first period thanks to Smirnov Light Jr.’s thirteenth goal of the season. It was a beautiful individual play that was set up by a long breakout pass made by Isaac Cormier-Hale in which Smirnov deked, ducked, dipped, dived and dodged around the Raiders defense and eventually tucked it home with a neat finish. Prince George would double their lead just thirty seconds before the end of the first period as the top line for the Firebirds would come up huge. Dani Forsberg would rifle home a beautiful one-timer goal thanks to a great play made by Chris York who initially got it from Teodors Cukurs. Prince George is really feeling it at this point in the season and could be headed for a date with the Four Star Cup if things keep up. The second period saw more back and forth play between both teams as Prince George tried to extend their lead while Halifax desperately tried to get back into it. Greta Iverson made a costly mistake with three minutes left in the period as she hauled down a Prince George player and went to the box for tripping. Prince George would waste no time and score 8 seconds later thanks to Teemu Sirius’ 10th goal of the season. Smirnov Light Jr. and Karl Hertzberg would have the helpers on his goal. The third period started off great for the Raiders as they managed to get a goal back within the first thirty seconds. Off the faceoff, Solaire Azarov took a Greta Iverson pass and took advantage of some really shoddy defending and eventually slammed it home after Harris got a piece of the initial shot. Halifax would then cut the lead to one goal as Zanarkand Abes would score his 12th of the season. Halifax’s top line saw a ton of time late in the period and eventually that paid off as both Brandon Gauthier and Zander Rhys got in on the assists for Abes goal. That would be all she wrote for scoring in the game however as the Firebirds would hang on to take this one. Stephen Harris had a great game up until the final period and even then he made some huge saves late to give the Firebirds the W they so desperately needed. Firebirds 3, Raiders 2

Game 40: Colorado Mammoths @ Prince George Firebirds

In what has turned into a pretty big rivalry as the season has gone on, Prince George welcomed the Colorado Mammoth’s to British Columbia for the final time this regular season. Despite Colorado being decently behind the Firebirds in the standings, they are actually leading the season series between the two clubs. The first period was an eventful one as penalties were handed out like skittles as things got completely out of hand. During the 20 minute first period, over 29 penalty minutes were handed out between the two teams. Teddy Kesler opened up the scoring for the Mammoths just past the fifteen minute mark thanks to an absolutely dynamite feed from Zinaida Titova. These two have some natural chemistry and they’ve been tearing up the Firebirds defense all season. Exactly one minute later the two connected again as Teddy Kesler got his 14th of the season, second of the game, to put the Mammoths up by a score of two goals to zero. Zinaida Titova, again, got the lone assist on his goal as both players achieved multi-point evenings before the first period even ended. There was a huge brawl at the end of the period that saw Nick Dupuis, Vincent Garland, Isaac Cormier-Hale and Finn Larsson go off for fighting as well as Dani Forsberg, Dante Gallo and Teodors Cukurs go off for various other infractions in what was the Firebirds first line-brawl of the season. Prince George got one back early in the second period thanks to Dani Forsberg’s 8th goal of the season. Nick Celej and Teodors Cukurs provided the two helpers on that one. The second line was again instrumental in another big game as Smirnov Light Jr. tied things up just under halfway through the second period. Light and Karl Hertzberg have been absolutely deadly for the Firebirds over the past dozen or so games. Smirnov Light Jr. would strike again and sink the Mammoths chances of grabbing a win in this game as the Firebirds would take the lead just over seven minutes into the third period. After a Landgon Alger tripping penalty sent the Firebirds on the power play, Smirnov Light Jr. would take the feed from Karl Hertzberg who received a pass from Caelen Fearghal, dance around the defense, and wrist it home for what would ultimately be the game winner. Stephen Harris managed to crawl above the .900 save percentage line right at the end of the game as he certainly settled down after letting two early goals in. Not his best game, Harris was a brick wall at the end of the game when Colorado was pushing for an equalizer. He’s at his best when the lights are brightest. Firebirds 3, Mammoths 2

Game 41: Prince George Firebirds @ Vancouver Whalers

The Firebirds went into Vancouver for the final time this season with the hopes that they could extend their winning streak to six games. All signs pointed to this being the probable outcome as the Whalers sold off current assets for future ones at the trade deadline and depleted an already young squad even more. Despite Vancouver’s poor record, they are a very pesky team to play at home as they have die-hard fans who pay good money to see their boys play. Vancouver would get off to the start they were hoping for as Berard Gutler opened up the scoring with only his fourth goal of the season. Gutler has scored the majority of his goals this season versus the Firebirds as his unique style just seems to confuse the Prince George defense. Bob Layton and Maricis Kalvis both were responsible for the assist on Gutler’s goal as the home crowd started to really get into the game and believe they could upset one of the best teams in the league. With their top lines struggling, Prince George got a huge lift from their fourth line as Noah Stevenson scored his first goal of the season, forty one games in, to tie things up with just under a minute left to play in the second period. Taemin Gede, who’s fared much better than his line mates Stevenson and Riccardelli on the scoresheet, picked up the primary assist while rookie Declan Reilly, who its known more for his defense than his offense picked up the secondary assist. Vancouver Whalers rookie Phenom Emiya Shirou gave the Whalers the lead back eleven minutes into the third period after Rurik Razin and Four Four held the puck for a while, passing D to D, all while tiring out the Prince George Defense. Eventually, they passed it to Shirou who used his small but extremely agile frame to cut through the Prince George defense and give his team a one goal lead. Prince George would battle back though as Nicklas Bjornsen would take a terrible penalty with under three minutes left to put Prince George’s recently lethal power play on the ice. Karl Hertzberg, who’s been huge for the Firebirds, scored his 13th of the season just under a minute into the power play thanks to a feed from Nick Dupuis and Caelan Fearghal. This one was headed into OT but unfortunately for the Firebirds, their top lines were completely gassed from a few late power plays and Vancouver capitalized on some weaker opposition and scored just 57 seconds into the extra period. Tyler Toews, a late season free agent pickup, got his 5th of the season from Ghost Bear and Nicklas Bjornsen. Bartholomew Cechove had an absolutely fantastic night as he saved 32 of a possible 34 shots on net, keeping his team in the game until they won it in OT. Vancouver was heavily outshot all game by a margin of 34 to 23 so if Cechove wasn’t on his game, this could have been a blowout. Whalers 3, Firebirds 2

Game 42: Montreal Militia @ Prince George Firebirds

Prince George would welcome the Montreal Militia back to BC for the final time this season in game forty two which is certainly a good thing. Montreal’s style of play has caused all sorts of problems for Prince George all year long. Montreal on the other hand need this win to stay within striking distance of the Halifax Raiders in order to take the easier road of being the number one seed to the Four Star Cup. Montreal would break the Firebirds fan’s hearts just over a minute into the first period as Michael Walker would score his 17th goal of the season. Walker has absolutely torched the Firebirds all season long and he’ll be a huge threat if these teams end up meeting in the Cup finals. His goal was assisted by Montreal’s two stud homegrown defensemen in Jack Dodds and Ryan Strathairn. Despite a few power play opportunities for both teams, the score would remain the same throughout the first as both teams would get ten shots on net. Prince George would tie things up in the second period, at around the thirteen minute mark, thanks to Smirnov Light Jr’s 16th goal of the season. Isaac Cormier-Hale and Teemu Sirius would get the two helpers on that one but Smirnov did most of the work as he’s absolutely flying late in the season. Montreal would grab the lead back thanks to rookie Elias Lindstrom’s 5th goal of the season. Despite him having a 25 game penalty, Lindstrom has found a way to claw his way back into the rookie scoring race and is especially deadly versus the Firebirds. Ted Mcdonald got the lone assist on Elias’ goal as he flipped it out of the zone and Elias caught the Firebirds on a line change and made them pay. Smirnov Light Jr. who has been the hero for the Firebirds over the last few games, would score his 17th of the season just over three minutes into the third period. The assists on this goal would mirror Light’s last goal as Isaac Cormier-Hale would pick up the primary assist and Teemu Sirius would pick up the secondary assist for the Firebirds. This one would head into OT and it was all Firebirds from the drop of the puck in the extra period. They held the Militia to zero shots on goal during the overtime period but unfortunately for them, were unable to convert on any of their chances themselves so this one went to a shootout. Chris York opened up the scoring for the Firebirds on the shootout but was instantly matched by Tim Elliot from the Militia. Jean Girard won it for the Firebirds on the last shot before it would have went to a sudden death period and the Firebirds would take this one. Both Thaddeus Prince and Dean Melanson were great in this game. Melanson got the start to give Harris some rest before the playoffs. Firebirds 3, Militia 2 (SO)

Game 43: Halifax Raiders @ Prince George Firebirds

Halifax would travel to British Columbia to take on the Firebirds as both teams are deadlocked in fierce battles with their divisional foes to determine the seeding for the Four Star Cup playoffs. Both teams desperately needed a win here as both Kelowna and Montreal had played earlier and won their games. Halifax got off to a dream start for them as they have struggled against the Firebirds in Prince George. Brandon Gauthier scored his 14th of the season just over twenty seconds into the game as the extremely potent Halifax top line went to work on a seemingly unprepared Prince George top line. Gauthier won the faceoff, the puck came to Sepp Reiter who carried the puck into the zone. Reiter dropped the puck back to Zander Rhys who found Gauthier streaking down the left side of the ice and hit him with a beautiful pass and Gauthier made no mistakes on the shot as it went top corner as Melanson didn’t stand a chance. The Prince George Firebirds got their fans back into is as they responded with a goal of their own just over two minutes later. Rookie Xander Green got his 9th tally of the season as the third line for Prince George has been a consistently producing threat all season long. Declan Reilly and Jean Girard would pick up the two assists on Xander’s goal. The second period came and went and saw the Halifax Raiders pin the Firebirds in their own zone for long stretches of the game. Luckily for the Firebirds, Melanson was up to the task and stopped all ten shots by the Raiders in the second. The third period was a different story as Frankie Latta gave the Raiders the lead just over eight minutes in off of a fine pass from John Zoidberg. Halifax would double their lead five minutes later as another one of their rookie additions would score. Luca Meier, a dark horse first rounder for the upcoming SHL draft, would score his third of the season off of a pass from fellow rookie Jakub Dvorak and Gail Kapperkanen. Zander Rhys would be guilty of a hooking call that could have been a penalty shot but the ref awarded Prince George the power play. They were able to capitalize as Nick Dupuis scored his 7th goal for the Firebirds from the backend. Dupuis has been a surprisingly good addition for the Firebirds who took him late in the entry draft. Karl Herzberg provided the lone assist on the goal as he was forced to take the faceoff after the Firebirds center man was thrown out for an infraction. Unfortunately, it would be too little too late for Prince George as time would wind down to zero with the score remaining the same. Neither goalie had a particularly great evening as not that many shots found their way to the goalies overall but Max Smith-Frey made the big saves when his team needed them most. Raiders 3, Firebirds 2

Game 44: Prince George Firebirds @ St. Louis Scarecrows

This would be the final meeting in the regular season between the Prince George Firebirds and the St. Louis Scarecrows. This is lucky for St. Louis as Prince George has had their number all season and has yet to lose against the Scarecrows in regulation. St. Louis was another team thought to have been going for it at the trade deadline but their GM’s were unable to find any good enough deals. Prince George would score first on the power play. Geoff Reine would be sent to the sin bin for two minutes for roughing because of some shenanigans after the whistle and Prince George would capitalize moments later. Karl Hertzberg, one of the Firebirds unsung heroes this season, would score his 14th of the season after some dominant play in the offensive end by the Firebirds. Smirnov Light won the faceoff cleanly back to Nick Dupuis who did well to keep the rolling puck in the zone. He circled around and ended up back on the blue line but saw Hertzberg cutting in from the boards and put a pass between the defenders legs right on Hertzberg’s tape. Karl made a nice move to shake his defender and did a half spin-o-rama and surprised Jimmy Wagner as the puck went right through the five-hole. The Firebirds lead wouldn’t last long as St. Louis would answer back four minutes later. Ryan Todd would score just his fourth goal of the season after a nice play between a few of the St. Louis rookies. Brett Kennedy and Riley Jako would combine for 6 passes to one another before the puck eventually come to Todd who tucked it home. This young St. Louis team is absolutely flying here thanks to the loud support from their home fans and Matthew Auston would break the deadlock three minutes later. Another all-rookie goal, Matthew Auston took a pass from Niklas Zetterberg and slammed it home after Melanson gave up a juicy rebound on Auston’s initial shot. Cameron Dubois was credited with the other assist on the play. Early on in the second period St. Louis would double their lead thanks to Crossfit Jesus’ 4th goal of the season. Jesus, who looks strikingly like Matthew Auston really grinded out this goal with his linemates as they pinned the Firebirds in their own zone for well over a minute. Eventually the puck popped loose to Stuart Minkus who then tossed the puck over to Joonas Rasmussen who dumped it in deep. Crossfit Jesus won a battle of wills down in the corner and retrieved the puck. He wrapped around the net and flung the shot on net and it deflected off a Firebirds defender and ended up in the back of the net. The definition of a greasy goal put the Scarecrows up by two. St. Louis would completely lose their composure in the third period as they would end up killing penalties for over half of the 20 minute time frame. Prince George, who’s powerplay overall has been disappointing this season, has been red-hot recently and made the Scarecrows pay. Teodors Cukurs scored his 15th of the season just under halfway through the third period to pull the Scarecrows lead back to one. Tapper Kottbulle and Chris York would be the two helpers on the play. Geoff Reine would take another horrible penalty late in the game and Prince George would step up, with their net empty, and tie it up with just under ten seconds left to play in the game. Tapper Kottbulle scored his 2nd of the season off of a huge bomb of a shot thanks to an Isaac Cormier-Hale fake shot which fooled the entire defensive core of the Scarecrows. This game headed into OT and saw neither team really take advantage of any of their opportunities in the extra frame. The shootout was one for the ages though. Chris York scored right away for the Firebirds but that was matched by Fletcher Carric. Karl Hertzberg then scored for the Firebirds and was immediately matched by Joonas Rasmussen for the Scarecrows. Both teams then missed the net/had shots saved for 6 straight rounds until Smirnov Light Jr. scored for the Firebirds only to be matched by Stuart Minkus of the Scarecrows. Fourth liner Noah Stevenson would then score for the Firebirds and Dean Melanson would stonewall Andreoff to give the Firebirds the win. Jimmy Wagner had a hell of a game stopping 36 out of a possible 39 shots but couldn’t get it done in the shootout, letting four goals in twelve go in. Firebirds 4, Scarecrows 3
