Game 50: Detroit Falcons vs Colorado Mammoths
Game Link
Summary:

The game had started with a quick goal by Colorado 1:44 into the period. Then Colorado got into penalty trouble taking 3 minor penalties before the period would be over. They got lucky as Detroit wasn’t able to convert on any of the man advantages.

1-0 Colorado goal ( Colton Hagan from Finn Larsson & Finn Kruger)

Heading into the second period Colorado got into penalty trouble again but Landon Boeing stood tall and kept the 1 nothing lead. 6:27 into the second Colorado manages to add another goal to give them a 2-0 cushion. But that wasn’t enough for them 6 minutes later they would add another one to give them a 3-0 lead which is a safer lead that they could work with. Not counting out Detroit yet they would come back with a late goal just before the period was going to end at 18:22.

2-0 Colorado goal ( Finn Larsson from Colton Hagan & Jake Brosnan)
3-0 Colorado goal ( Maxwell Andrews from Jaime Bennitez & Suri Uedo)
3-1 Detroit goal (Yuriy Starkonov from Noro Wozy & Harper Wright)

The 3rd period wasn’t all that exciting no goals happened just more penalties by Colorado and Detroit still couldn’t take advantage of the undisciplined Mammoth team.

Goalie Comparison:

When it comes to goalies they can usually make or break a hockey game in this case Landon Boeing of the Colorado Mammoths stole this game for the Mammoths. With how much they spent on the penalty kill and Boeing getting peppered from all angles and still being able to take the win is beyond me.

Patrick Diehl (Detroit Falcons) 19 saves from 22 shots (0.864)

Landon Boeing (Colorado Mammoths) 29 saves from 30 shots (0.967)

(Boeing wasn't taking his eye off the prize tonight)

3 stars of the Game:

1st Star: Landon Boeing

No surprise here as Boeing stops 29 of the 30 shots he faced. He adds another win to the record and helping Colorado work their way up the standings. Boeing is going to be a key piece in Colorado’s success.

2nd star: Finn Larsson

Very well deserved star for Larsson managing an assist on the first goal of the game and then scoring the game winning goal not much better than that. Also managing to win 9 out of 15 draws which isn’t the easiest to do in such an elite league.

3rd star: Colton Hagan

Colton managed to score the first goal of the game to get things rolling for the Mammoths and also put the first assist on Larsson’s GWG. Hagan also played a physical role in the game with 3 hits for his team.

Karri's Keeper Corner

Week 3 - Game 50 - DET vs COL

Diehl vs Boeing

Keeper of the Match:

This right here tonight folks was the Landon Boeing show. 29 saves on 30 shots - securing his team the 3-1 victory over Detroit, is almost the definition of Keeper of the Match. He was the goalie tonight that faced the most shots and the strongest chances against - some of his saves tonight were electric. You could tell his team was comfortable with him in net, as they were relaxed and loose (maybe a little too loose!Wink in all ends of the ice. They knew Boeing had their backs at all times tonight, and he did just that. The one goal against was a result of his team's loose play, but he gave his best effort and almost secured the shutout. Great game tonight by Boeing.

<div align="center">Head to Head
Falcons vs Mammoths </div>

Faceoff Wins: Detroit 38 - 47 Colorado
Colorado won the most face offs on the circle, they had way more puck possession and the final score showed for it. Kesler had 18 of those faceoff wins for the Mammoths.

Shots: Detroit 30 – 22 Colorado
The Falcons had the most shots in tonights matchup, however Boeing was on his game tonight and managed to stop 29 out of 30 shots keeping his team alive. Trocheck led his team with 6 shots and Zbyněk led their team with 5 shots.

Hits: Detroit 16- 19 Colorado
Pretty even game tonight when it comes to hits, however Zinaida Titova came out strong tonight leading the team with 5 hits.

Blocked Shots: Detroit 8 – 13 Colorado
Mammoths were hot tonight when blocking shots, also another reason why Boeing had a great night. A special shout out goes out to Rambo for blocking 8 shot… I’m sure he will be sore tomorrow but he helped the mammoths win tonight.

PIM: Detroit 6 – 16 Colorado
The Mammoths were not disciplined tonight, however there were no power play goals by either team, they didn’t have to pay for their actions since the penalty killing teams were great tonight.

2. Landon Boeing Mammoths Boeing held the fort with his team being outshot early in the game, preserving the early one goal lead. He shut the Falcons out in the 3rd period as well, only giving up a goal late in the second period sitting on a 3 goal lead. He was there when his team needed him.

1. Finn Larsson Mammoths Picked up 2 points, including the game winning goal in the second period. Picked up the primary assist on the opening goal, and dominated the dot with 60% wins.

<center>Unsung Hero</center>

Rambo - Right Defenseman - First Pairing -Colorado Mammoths

Tonight's Unsung Hero is without a doubt Rambo, who sacrificed his body all night long stopping pucks from getting to the net. By himself, he matched the number of blocked shots by the entire Detroit Falcons squad, putting up an other-worldly 8 blocked shots.

The Mammoths goalie, Landon Boeing, was peppered all night long, putting in an masterful performance while stopping 29 of 30 shots faced. That number would have been much higher if not for the effort Rambo put it getting in the shooting lanes and making it difficult for the Falcons to find a path to net.

Interesting stat of the night: Rambo totaled 7 blocked shots in the second period alone. He blocked 2 shots in 4 shots towards the end of a period during a massive flury of shots by the Falcons, in which they attempted 4 shots in 8 seconds.

TSN Turning Point
The turning point of this game is the first goal of the Mammoths by Colton Hagan at 1:44 of the 1st period. The early goal set the tone of the game and the Mammoths will go on scoring 2 more unanswered goals to finish of the game. The early goal throw off Detroit’s game plan and started playing catch up. Though they had the most shots on goal, most were harmless. Jack Bubbles had 5 shots, a guy that only played 10min without any powerplay time. Falcons shoot on sight tactic didn’t work against the Colorado this game.

1 - Landon Boeing (COL)
Amazing performance rookie goaltender. He faced 30 shots and saved 29 of them providing a solid backbone to this already talented and deep team. Great positioning out there and rarely gave any rebounds.

2 - Finn Larsson (COL)
Finished the night with a goal and an assist with only 15min if ice time. He also won 9 faceoffs out of 15 for impressive 86.6%. His assist on the first goal came from a brilliant individual play and a fine shot by Larsson resulting in a rebound, which Hagan buried. For his overall efficiency on the ice tonight, Larsson get the 2nd star of the game.

3 - Colton Hagan (COL)
The 3rd star of the game goes to Colton Hagan. Not only he opened the scoring but also finished the night with an assist for a total of 2 points in 15:52 of ice time. His goal showed his instinct as a scorer and his ability to drift off and be at the right spot at the right moment. He was also a physical presence in that 2nd line and also played over a min during penalty kill. For his great two-way performance, he deserves the 3rd star.

Unsung Hero
My unsung hero in this game has to be Yuriy Starkonov. He was a constant threat every time he was on the ice. Not only he was able to find space and unleash 6 shots at net, he also finished the night with 4 hits providing a physical presence to the Falcons top line. Starkonov played 2min and efficiently killed 2 penalties.

Landon Boeing
29 saves on 30 shots
<a href='index.php?showuser=2554' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>boeing33</a>

Landon Boeing has been one of the SMJHL's most surprising young goalies this season. After a rocky rookie year in net, Landon has taken on the workload for the upstart Colorado Mammoth. Becoming a rock in net and performing on levels heads and shoulders above his rookie campaign. The young goalie showed yet again why he is an integral part of the Colorado Mammoths and maybe the most valuable part of their success in the S34 SMJHL season. Stopping 29 of 30 shots in the game and being the difference maker as his Mammoths were outshot 30-22. Boeing is becoming a gamebreaking goaltender and with continued success and time training - the young man from Maine could become a solid SHL goaltender. Only time will tell the fruits of his labors but tonight Beoing was something absolutely special.

Goon of the Game

Olson Stuart
4 PIM / Cross-Checking and Roughing

During this hard fought game between the Mammoths and Falcons - one player took it upon himself to try and be the lawmaker on the ice. This player was Olson Stuart. His 4 penalty minutes lead all skaters and he nearly was involved in a scrum with a couple Detroit Players. Stuart is a passionate player and sometimes lets his competitiveness and fondness for his new teammates get the best of him. Taking a Cross-Checking penalty can sometimes be dangerous but Stuart was lucky to not injure anyone and not take any more than 2 minutes for the penalty. The Roughing penalty came near the end of the game as Stuart tried to antagonize one of the Detroit players who had been chirping all game. This ended in two minutes and Stuart got an early night in the locker room!

Finn2Finn Tracker

This segement deals with analyzing the amount of points that Finn Krüger and Finn Larsson were able to combine on for the Colorado Mammoth. During the 50th game of the SMJHL season Krüger and Larsson teamed up for the first goal of the game only 1:44 into the game with beautiful tape to tape feeds to each other and a pass to Colton Hagan which Hagan buried in the net! Another example of the beautiful Finn2Finn connection!

Heat Check

Yuriy Starkonov

The reason why I chose this young talent over the guys with more of a statistical output this game is because all eyes were on him tonight. He topped all players with 6 shots despite being a pass first guy, he was able to net the only goal for the Falcons and put on a show with his speed and control. He also showed off his physical side by lading his team in checks so if he keeps on performing like this, the fruits will come, he is playing hockey the right way.

<div align="center">Bad Luck?</div>

The Falcons outshot Colorado in the 1st and 3rd period, only in the 2nd did they not outshoot them, rather both teams had 8 shots on goal. When the game was over, Detroit amassed 30 shots while Colorado only managed 22. Despite the 8 shot differential for Detroit, Colorado still managed to win with a 2 goal lead. There weren’t any powerplay goals, so we can’t attribute the extra goals to special teams, and the goalies came in with somewhat similar records: Diehl 5-4-1 and Boeing 6-3-4. I am neither a Detroit homer or a Colorado hater, but this game just seems like one of bad luck for Detroit, and good luck for Colorado. These types of games happen where the bounces go your way.

Game MVP

Landon Boeing got the call in goal for Colorado tonight, and his performance was remarkable. Facing 30 shots, Boeing surrendered only one goal, giving him a 0.967 save percentage on the way to his 6th win of the season. The Falcons dominated the shot count 30-22, but they had no answer for Boeing.

Key Stat

Falcons 0/7 PP Falcons

As is seemingly the case rather often in the SMJHL, failing to take advantage of multiple PP chances is likely to end up in a defeat. This was the case tonight as well, with the Falcons anaemic PP unit failing to generate a goal despite having 7 different chances to do so. Some credit of course has to go to the Mammoths' PK, but ultimately it was the poor execution from Detroit that was their undoing.

Three Comments

The defensive pairing of Otto Lahti and Aaron Crawford really struggled in this game. Both finished at -3 with 0 points in just under 24 minutes of play.

Olson Stuart was playing some physical hockey in the third period, too physical for the refs. He was penalised for cross-checking and roughing in the final period.

Teddy Kesler deserves some credit for his hard work for Colorado. Despite not getting on the scoresheet, he put in 8 and a half minutes on the PK. He won 18/39 faceoffs, and he was certainly fatigued after the game having played 23 minutes.

Welcome to our newest PGS segment!

<div align="center">WHO DUNNIT BETTER
Where we take an in depth look at who performed certain aspects of the game better; face offs, special teams, etc.</div>

Face Offs
When looking at who performed better in the center-dots, we'll look at percentage and +/- (as winning a face off is indicative of given possession).

Another busy night for centremen for both teams. We saw a series high 85 draws tonight, which is enough to give the ref the need to ice his arm. But, we're not here for the refs. We're here to talk about who Dunnit Better. RIGHT GUYS? Okay, team-wise, we're looking at the home team, Colorado Mammoths championing the face off wins with 47 wins against Detroit Falcons performance of 38. When your team wins 55.3% of the face off draws, you're looking at a higher chance at winning. Which is what happened tonight when Colorado won, 3-1.

But perhaps we can discern something different from the players' perspectives. Let's look at how face off-takers who took at least 15 draws.

Jack Grey lead his team in terms of % at 10/18 for 55.6%. Unfortunately he didn't get enough support from his fellow centerman, Harper Wright who only won 36% of his draws. And he took most of 'em - 36 draws to himself.

However, the winning team had a lot easier night at the dots. Finn Larsson had the better percentage at 60% when he won 9 of his 15 draws. A very exhausted Teddy Kesler took 39 draws, but only won 18 of them, to give him a sub-50% draw win-rate.

Who Dunnit Better? Finn Larsson! Congratulations!

Three Stars

1. Landon Boeing Mammoths Landon save the day for Colorado. The mammoths got out shot 30 to 22. He had 29 saves from 30 shots which is a 0.967 sv% and he was able to beat Noro Wozy with ease.

2. Finn Larsson Scarecrows The swedish playmaker scored a goal and added an assist for the night, in 15:07 minutes played. He was also a key player for the team as he won 9/15 faceoff which was very critical to get an easy possession for the team.

3. Colton Hagan Mammoths Colton played very good all-round game tonight. He played great on the offense as he scored a goal and an assist and he also shots twice. Plus, he was an agressive player for team with 3 hits on the opponent for an easy turnover.

Unsung Hero

Rambo Mammoths The falcons couldn't get their shots on the net because of Rambo. He had 8 shots blocked during the game. He also had 3 hits. He sacrificed his body all night and he worked as much as Landon. The two of them were just unstoppable tonight.

Difference Maker

The Falcons had 7 chance to score and only score one on even strength. If they want to win then they should had put more effort on the power play. Those advantage are giving for free. If you're not showing up on the power play, don't expect to win the game. Hopefully they learn their lesson and play seriously next time.

Teddy Kesler nails the detroit netminder with a backwards bicycle death jab, nice feature

Turning point
Code:
Arthur Heikki (DET) for Slashing (Minor) at 6:46

This penalty came right after colorado took their 2-0 lead. Detroit was clearly very frusterated at this point, and let their tempers get the best of them. and Heikki took a very bad penalty, now Detroit killed this off but Coloardo came right back afterwords to score again and give them a 3-0 lead. That powerplay gave Colorado all the momentum, and they carried it to score another, then lock it down defensively, and thats why this is kits turning point.
