Basic Overview, Scoring, and Rewards

The SHL Fantasy League is a typical fantasy sports league, but centered around guessing the performances of players in the Simulation Hockey League. It runs every season, with the fantasy drafts beginning around the same time as the SHL Entry Draft. All players who sign up for the draft are sorted at total random into groups of 8 participants, who will then draft players in snake (reversing) order (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, and repeat). All participants have 6 picks, and are required to pick 3 forwards, 2 defensemen, and 1 goaltending option (selecting a team's goaltending efforts, not a player).

The players that you pick in fantasy are scored as follows.

Skaters:
Goals: 3.7 points (G * 3.7)
Assists: 2.7 points (A * 2.7)
Shots on Goal: 0.2 points (SOG * 0.2)
Hits: 0.4 points (HIT * 0.4)
Shot Blocks: 0.3 points (SB * 0.3) for Forwards
Shot Blocks: 1.0 points (SB * 1.0) for Defencemen

Goalies:
Wins: 5 points (W * 5)
Shutouts: 5 points (SO * 5)
Saves: 0.1 points ([SA - GA] * 0.1)

All scoring is done automatically by a spreadsheet. At the end of the season, scores and swaps are double checked by humans, then awards are handed out. In the extremely unlikely (but not impossible) event of a tie, the tiebreakers will be goals scored; then goalie wins.

The rewards are as follows:

Group Placement
1st: +5 TPE
2nd: +4 TPE
3rd: +3 TPE
4th: +2 TPE

Global Placement
100 - 87.5%: +3 TPE
87.4 - 75%: +2 TPE
74.9 - 62.5%: +1 TPE
62.4 - 50%: +$1,000,000 bonus

Participation Bonus (completed the draft)
+$1,000,000

Variant leagues (i.e. Dynasty, SMJHL or Champions leagues) will have an alternative reward structure; refer to the rules of the variant league.

Drafting Players

The draft begins when the thread for your group is posted; the first person in the draft order may make their pick immediately. Once the pick is made, that person must then send a PM to the next person in the draft order advising them that it is their turn to choose a player. You must not settle for an @ alert in your pick post; many people turn these alerts off, you MUST send an actual PM. Not sending this PM is considered a dick move and will land you on the shit-list of the group manager, the league manager and the person you didn't PM, so make sure you do it.

Each player has 18 hours to make their pick. When the 18 hours is up, the next person is not automatically on the clock; they may wait for the fantasy manager to declare the previous person is skipped and to officially start the clock, or they may make their pick immediately, so long as they note that the 18 hours has passed. If you are skipped, you may come back and make up the pick immediately.

Included in the information in your pick should be the full name of the player you have picked, and the position they play. You do not need to list their team (although some people do anyway because it looks nicer to have all the pips).

You need to make sure that you draft 3 forwards, 2 defensemen and 1 goaltender; if you pick too many, the group manager or league manager will ask you to pick again, and that pick will not have priority over previous picks. Check the roster thread forums for information on what position a player plays.

You must also make sure that you do not pick any players who have already been picked in your group- if you accidentally repeat a pick, again, the group manager or league manager will ask you to pick again, and your pick will not have priority over previous picks. The group manager will periodically update the list of players that have been picked in the draft to assist you there.

The draft will finish when all participants in the group have picked 6 players; we will always aim to try and have this done before the first sim of the season. If it isn't finished by the second SHL sim, all participants in the group will be invited to immediately submit all of their remaining picks, first in, first served, without regard to the existing draft order. After the 3rd sim has happened, no more picks will be accepted.

Swapping Players

During each fantasy season, you may swap one of your players. You may make this swap at any time, even before the draft has finished or before the SHL season has started, if you think you've made a particularly awful pick, and the last day you can swap is the day of the final sim.

To make a swap, you must post in the fantasy group thread with a; the names of the players you wish to swap in and out, and b; the statistics of the players you wish to stop in and out.

The statistics of the players you need to include are as follows,

Skaters
Goals (G)
Assists (A)
Shots On Goal (SHT)
Hits (HIT)
Shot Blocks (SB)

Goalies
Wins (W)
Shutouts (SO)
Saves (SA - GA) ("SA" means "shots against", not saves, so make sure you subtract goals against!)

Including the statistics of the players you wish to have swapped means that even if the group manager isn't able to make the switch before the next sim, they'll still have the right numbers from the time you wanted the swap to happen. Include statistics to make sure that your player is swapped.

Rules

Selecting an retired player is considered to be an invalid pick. Please do your own due diligence when picking players.

Don't do the following things.

Cheating
Cheating can be identified as,
  • Editing the fantasy scoring sheet to incorrectly reflect scores or player choices,
  • Editing or deleting posts in fantasy group threads that contain picks or swaps,
  • Knowingly posting incorrect information in swap requests.
Being caught cheating will result in being ejected from all SHL Fantasy groups and being barred from participating again indefinitely, and receiving no rewards for your participation in fantasy that season.

Tanking
Inexplicably this actually happens, but tanking can be identified as,
  • Deliberately picking players that you believe will post uncompetitive scores.
If a group or league manager believes you are tanking, they may ask you to justify your picks. If you are unable to give a satisfactory reason why you believe your picks will be competitive (where "satisfactory" is determined by the group or league manager), the group or league manager have the right to replace you in the group and you will receive no rewards for your participation in fantasy that season.

Failing to PM the next person in the draft
Failing to PM the next person in the draft can be identified as,
  • Failing to PM the next person in the draft. (shocker!)
If a player informs the group manager that you failed to PM them about their pick, the group manager will give you the opportunity to prove otherwise. If you can't, on the first offence (and any further offences), the group manager will leave a flaming bag of poop on your doorstep. On the second offence, the group manager will have the right to remove and replace you, and you will receive no rewards for your participation in fantasy that season.

Acts such as deliberately giving bad advice to other gullible people participating in fantasy; dumping all of the TPE from your checking stat to affect the results of a fantasy team; changing the lines of any SHL team you control to affect the results of a fantasy team; trading players away from teams you control to affect the results of fantasy team; or getting yourself elected to H.O. to influence other league rules in the hope of affecting the results of a fantasy team, are not against the rules. They are, however, considered unsportsmanlike, to various degrees, and you should refrain from doing these things.

Options to avoid being replaced in the draft

We tend to make several replacements during the course of the fantasy drafts. These tend to be people who don't bother showing up to make their picks; or forget; or don't have the time to do it. So, here's a few points of order.

A group manager will give you 48 hours to make up the picked you missed before seeking a swap. Even if you continuously miss your official pick window, you can still catch up after each pick and be okay. We would much prefer it, however, if you didn't, because it badly slows the groups down and we don't necessarily get a big window between the end of the SHL draft and the start of the season.

If you aren't picking because you aren't sure what to do, speak up. Group managers will answer all questions on how SHL fantasy works.

If you aren't picking because you aren't sure who to pick, ask friends. Other players in your SHL or SMJHL teams will happily give you advice on who are great options. If they aren't responding, or you aren't on a team yet (undrafted prospect), head over to the SHL discord and ask for advice. There's always people willing to assist.

If you aren't picking because you don't have the time to make your picks, nominate a proxy to pick on your behalf. Your SHL or SMJHL GM/co-GM will almost always be able to do this for you; But any friend who can show up will do, other than the group manager themselves.

Alternatively, you can PM your group manager with an ordered preference list for when your pick comes up. If you do this, make sure you list more preferences than the number of picks to be made before your turn, to make sure there will definitely be a name on the list your group manager can put in.

Above all, make sure you communicate with your group manager. Group managers are much more likely to look for a replacement if you completely ghost on them.

FAQ

Can I sign up for this even if I'm in the SMJHL?
-Yes! Anyone can sign up for this.

Where do I sign up?
-There will be a thread created titled "Season(?) SHL Fantasy League Signups" in the SHL Player Progression section. Just post there and you are all signed up!

I missed the signups, can I still get in?
-There is still a chance you can get in. There will be a waiting list created in the same section as the signups thread, and you may be sorted into either an existing group looking for a replacement or an entirely new group. However, if the SHL season has already started, you're probably out of luck.

Are we allowed to trade players or draft picks?
-You may not trade players or draft picks.

I'm not sure who to pick. Can I just ask for the best player available?
-No. You must specify a player. If you are uncertain who to pick, ask for advice in your locker room or on discord.

I was skipped, but I did not receive a PM asking me to pick. What do I do?
-You should post in the group thread stating that you did not receive a PM, and make up your pick as soon as possible.

My group manager is absent- not updating the group sheet or the OP in the group thread, or the draft has stalled and they aren't doing anything about it. What do I do?
-Message the league manager and ask them to update it (they will); group managers are expected to keep both the group sheet and the group thread OP up to date throughout the season.

I'd like to suggest that we split the way participants are sorted into fantasy groups...

I have a suggestion on what we could do for SHL fantasy that is not splitting the way participants are sorted into fantasy groups...
-Message the league manager with it.

I'd like to sign up to be a group manager. How do I do that?
-The league manager will sometimes post in the jobs board asking for new managers; but you can always message the league manager to register your interest, and they will come looking for you if they need you.

Archives

I'm currently in the process of taking the universal fantasy sheet template and filling them out with information from old fantasy seasons. For now, I'm just going to start with S32/31/30, but in theory I could keep going back with archives until either the fantasy group threads or the STHS indexes are no longer available. Having this information compiled means it'll be possible in the future to think about ranking our all time best fantasy players and participants, which I'm sure a few of our veterans would be interested in.
