New Graphics Head
#1

Hello SHL! My apologies for the delay on this and the other job postings, I ended up with some unexpected news at my yearly physical last week and ended up getting tied up with a series of medical specialists. Luckily it turned out to be a false alarm but dealing with that was legitimately all I was able to handle. I’ll deal with everything else tomorrow.

That being said, I’m happy to announce our new head of graphics grading. He had a stellar application which absolutely blew me away, and I have no doubt he’ll be great for the future of the SHL.

I’d like to welcome our new graphics head, @king! Congrats!

First of all, I would like to thank Eggy and the head office for this opportunity they have given me to contribute to the league in a role that I am very passionate about. The SHL has been around for a long time and many people have done many jobs that have contributed to its success so it’s exciting to get to put my drop in the bucket now.

@“Ghost” set the bar extremely high for head of graphics. You don’t need to browse through the Graded Weekly Submissions for long to realize just how many graphics he’s graded during his tenure. The fact that he’s been able to keep such a high standard for grading quality, consistently explaining in detail why each piece of graphics received the grade it did, and how those producing the graphics could improve their work, is astonishing.

We currently have a great graphics grading group with @“karey”, @“Kesler17” and @“Insayne”. I’m looking forward to learning from them, and it goes with out saying how much time each has put into graphics.

With that said, we’ll be going in a bit of a different direction with how graphics will be operated. The following is the outline for our plan moving forward. The implementation of our plan will begin Tuesday July 31st (since I have a final exam that morning)

Phase 1: Address the back log and solidify the grading team

- The two month back log of media needs to be addressed immediately. I will begin grading it myself starting Tuesday using the current grading rubric. It's an ambitious project but I hope by grading such a large volume of graphics content early on in my tenure will give me the adequate experience needed to address the current grading rubric, and in making a more informed choice of what qualities to look for when hiring future graders.

- We will re-examine the grading team. The three people we have right now are excellent, and I would be humbled to work with them going forward. With that said, we will be changing how grading is done and the pay system, so we'll need to all have a discussion to see if it makes sense for the current team to stay in their current roles, considering the direction graphics is going.

Phase 2: New payment system and new grading rubric

- New payment system for graders. Graders will get paid per piece they grade. This is to incentivize regular grading, and not let people sit on a paycheque. An appropriate amount per graded piece will be decided upon, by considering both how long it takes to grade a piece effectively and how much money graders have been in the past on average per article.

- New rubric. A very clear rubric that encourages art that contributes to the website. There is a decent amount of low quality graphics that get pushed through the system to make easy money. Media is a great way to impact the website, providing high quality signatures for all members. We will be putting in incentives on, making signatures for other members and for jersey swaps among other things. A second hope is that each user who makes their money through graphics in the SHL can decrease the quantity of pieces they produce and increase the quality. Allowing them to make the same amount of money for the same time, but be able to create pieces of work we'll see on the website

I would rather have one excellent signature that a user actually uses, than 5 meh signatures that are made and never used.

Phase 3: League wide graphics contests

- This is something that has existed in the past but I hope to put some more structure around it, and use it as a means to channel our communities creative abilities into making lasting contributions to the website. The first league wide graphic contest will consist of designing an alternate jersey for which ever team finishes last in the SHL Logo contest. Every submission will be given to the SHL GM anonymously and the top 5 will be given cash rewards. A special bonus will be given if the SHL teams decides to use that jersey as their official alternate.

Thank you.

sounds like all this is going to do is discourage relatively inexperienced people from making graphics because they're going to be graded more harshly and paid less?

We will definitely spend a lot of time playing around with different systems, and I'll be consulting with a lot of people. Trying to find something that helps encourage high quality content with out stifling new users.

sounds like maybe grading on a 1-10 scale for quality would work? maybe 100k per point up to 5, then 75k for every point after?

good work team let's do it

The pay scale is pretty good now, the rubric isn't however and if that gets a redux, I'm onboard.

Congratulations on the job and thanks for clearing the backlog. As for the new grading and payout, we have had that before and went to a more casual grading that rewarded time and effort over quality to try and be more fair to all users and not discourage those who are learning. It has to be balanced against writing media articles in terms of time spent.
