S42 PT #4 - The Difference
#31

Pretty much everyone could see the Manhattan Rage's ultimate place in the League standings from the outset. From the time Luke Atmey was cashed in for prospects and draft stock. For this season at least, it would be a miracle to not finish dead last and far and away the number one slot for the first overall selection in the S43 SHL Draft. It's hard to say who made the difference since a lot of us who are active on the team are young.

I would like to think I made a positive difference. Cedric Moreau has his first year under his belt and ready to take on more challenges in the coming seasons. Yannick Berger has been a positive impact, leading the team in a tough campaign and sure to have a higher score once other prospects roll in. Shoyu Kikkoman has been a solid holdover as well on the defensive line. Hans and Rove were pretty good as well. Overall, we are simply a very young team. We expected it wouldn't be an easy season and we were probably going to go back to the well with a 1OA or 2OA. This was a season to measure by progress rather than standings. Next season may be as well.

With the regular season winding down, there's still something to play for, for the Edmonton Blizzard. While the Blizzard have a playoff spot locked up, they are still in a battle for first place in the West and also for the President's Trophy. Entering the final games of the season, there are 3 teams battling it out at the top, the Calgary Dragons, Hamilton Steelhawks, and Edmonton Blizzard.

In the West, the Dragons lead the Blizzard by one point, 62 to 61. The Dragons have one game left, while the Blizzard have 2 games left. If Edmonton wins their final 2 games, they clinch top spot in the conference. That would give them home ice advantage throughout the West playoffs.

As for the President's Trophy, the Steelhawks are currently leading that race. They have 65 points, with 1 game left. If Hamilton gets just one point in their final game, they clinch the President's Trophy. However, if they lose their game and Edmonton wins both of their games, the Blizzard would win the President's Trophy by virtue of the ROW tie breaker.

So as you can see, even at the very end of the season, the Edmonton Blizzard still have a ton to play for. The Blizzard have a couple of tough games to finish the season, but the biggest obstacle will be the game against the Jets. The Jets are fighting for their playoff lives so they are going to give Edmonton absolutely everything they can handle. My prediction is that Edmonton wins the West, but loses the President's Trophy to Hamilton.

The Manhattan Rage are certain to finish in last place this season, and have been for a long time. With two games left to play, we are a whopping 15 points down from the next closest team in EITHER conference. That being said, I don't think there is one person on the team that you can say made a difference that negatively impacted the team. The difference was just this teams sheer youth. For example, it is Reginald Rove's second season on the Rage (and fourth total including juniors), and he is already a first liner. While yeah we would've liked to win some more games, it certainly wasn't any of our expectation. Despite all this, I am still very excited for our future ahead. I know it doesn't seem like we have a bright one after only scoring a total of 27 points this season, but we have an extremely strong young core and should be good sooner rather than later.

Where to start really with what helped West Kendall end up where they are after this season?

Would we have liked to finish a bit higher than where we did? Definitely, but the team went through a lot of ups and downs as the season went, going from hot to cold all the time, so having some buffer to lock up a playoff spot isn't the worst, but we really wanted that #1 seed. Some of the main reasons we made it where we did is the play of Biscuit in net. Finally starting to come into his own, he has given West Kendall it's first real rock in net in a long time. Consistency is all that is needed, and he is starting to deliver it in spades. Next is the winger party we seem to be experiencing. Light - Forsberg - Wilson and Vyskoc all really took a big step this season in carrying the team offensively, and even though 2 of them are regressing, there seems to be no slowing down as they keep producing for the team.

As I am writing this, the season is finished. The New England Wolfpack finished third in the east and I will be honest, I am quite surprised. I expected the New England Wolfpack to have a sub-par season and miss closely the playoff. No instead, we finished tied with the West Kendall Platoon for second in the conference, in everything except goal differential, where they beat us for the second seeds. All to say that the match up between the West Kendall Platoon and the New England Wolfpack will be pretty exciting seeing how equal both teams are. What went right for the New England Wolfpack was the top line. Oisin Fletcher and Xander Green had a killer chemistry during the season and both finished in the top five scoring of the league, with Fletcher being the current scoring leader with 64 points. Toivo Kosonen also greatly helped the team to stay afloat from the blue line with his 49 points.

Kelowna pretty much had been on top of the SMJHL standings for 75% of the season and was looking like a shoe in for the top spot until the backup goaltender had to play. kelowna's offense started to take a crap at the same time the goaltender switch occurred. And since there is a policy in the SMJHL where you can't swap goaltenders out in the same sim Kelowna ended up playing Reece Artois for 8 games. He went 3-5 and Kelowna lost the top spot. He also was not swapped for the final 3 games of the season and even though he won all three it wasn't enough to take the top spot back again. So basically Kelowna ended up with the backup goalie playing the last 11 games of the season. I don't know if this was strategic in an attempt to get a more favorable matchup in the Kelowna GM's minds or not but Kelowna now tries for the threepeat from the number two slot instead of the number one. Time will tell if this will work in their favor.

The season is over. The reign of Winnipeg Jets domination is over. There were a couple moves in the offseason that may have had a huge impact on the team as we lost a lot of offensive firepower and physical presence. Visser and Bearss didn't put up epic numbers like they did last season. Bearss just went back to his sucking ways I guess. Total regression. Total decline. give him more money! But really, everything was going great and then we transferred to a new site and nothing worked. So obviously the new site is to blame for our losses. Hopefully our management will take a deep look at what went on this season and fill some of those holes that have been created. The moves we made were positive for our future, but the rest of the team wasn't able to make up for all of our losses. so obviously, we had negative effects from the changes.

It was another roush season for SFP, and even though we had a bit of a run sitting inside the playoffs we ultimately finished last in the West. I think the biggest difference came from Chris Partridge, who was a bright spot for the Pride all season despite the team’s poor record. He kept us in there almost every single night, and made every game winable. Partridge has had very little help from the team in front of him so far in his career, debuting just one season ago, and there look to be a few more rough seasons to come. Despite this, he has shown that he is a very capable starting goaltender, and he continues to improve every week. So if the Pride get this build along on schedule, Partridge should still be well within his prime age. The Pride know they can count on Chris between the pipes, and he was the unsung hero of S42.

Our season was pretty good considering our preseason expectation until the last 10 games of the season when our whole season completely blew apart. The objective set before the season was to get a playoff spot and we were on our way to reach this goal until the last stretch of the season when we lost nine out of our last 10 games which ended up our season in a big disappointment since things were looking good because we are an up-and-coming team with a lot of young players. Both our special units were decent, we finished the season fourth on the power play and eight on the penalty kill. However, we still seem to have a defensive problem since we finished our season giving up and 3.34 goals per game on average which place us at the fourth worst place in the league in terms of goals against. Since our core is still mainly made of young players, things are looking good for the next few seasons.

The Calgary Dragons after a hard fought season ended up second in the Western Conference. While the end was tough and we slipped out of the President's Trophy we are proud to make playoffs yet again. I think one of the big difference makers in Calgary staying in the playoffs for yet another season is our defense. While our offense wasn't a slouch by any means but more middle of the pack the defense really stood out as the backbone of the team. Calgary had the second lowest goals against in the league and the 4th lowest shots against in the league. So not only were they limiting the shots to the goalie but Hocolate played a big part in winning us some games. On top of all of this Calgary was also 1st in the league in penalty kill percentage really showing how much leg work the D really put in. Now if we could get the offense rolling like it should be we'll be sitting pretty.

Well, scrublord Pietra Volkova seems to have had a pretty detrimental effect on the Jets to the point that they missed the playoffs entirely. While her linemate Zach Evans was off carrying their team for the first half of the season, she was racking up an astronomic career-high 70 PIMs. While she ain't that great of a player anyway, having a second-liner in the box all the time was not exactly the most useful thing for the Jets. That being said, it's not like she took advantage of the time she did spend on the ice anyway. She was able to rack up another career-high in hits with 198 (didn't even break 200, the fucking loser), at the cost of having her worst scoring year since season 36. With only 34 points in 50 games, she might as well have been a pylon on the ice throughout the entire season. Hell, even a pylon would have had a cleaner, better defensive performance, Volkova ended the season with a -10, another stat she hadn't achieved since S36. Clearly, her useless performance was one of the biggest failures on the Jets, facilitating their unprecedented playoff miss. Way to go, Volks.

Oh don’t even stress. The blizzard are gonna beat out the dragons for top spot in the west and go on to win the damn cup. Ace is gonna fuck with the lines and were gonna get 10 goals a game bada bing bada Boom. We’re currently 2nd in the west but in the great words of Rickey Bobby, “if ya ain’t first... ya last”. Words to live by right there. Life isn’t a game people! Well it is a game.... BUT IT IS NOT A CEREAL! Wait it’s that too isn’t it.... shit where was I going with this... look the point is that life is a lot of things. So why not make it the time to win the cup. With the blue and white in blizz town. With ace doing GM things and being an all star player he is a huge difference maker in a positive way. That’s why we’re the best team out there.

The Vancouver Whalers finished the season strong with a big push at the end to clinch the conference champions headed into the postseason over the Kelowna Knights. The season had a little back and forth for a while but Vancouver won 10 of their final 11 games which was enough to secure the top slot by 2 points. Vancouver had a lot of chemistry on their lines and had some of the best forwards and defensemen in the league. Interestingly enough looking at the assists leaderboard you can see that four of the top 10 are all from Vancouver. Now I don't know a damn thing about hockey but I would assume that this means there wasn't really one person leading the charge, or a "get the puck to x" kind of mentality. Instead Vancouver's players played together extremely well and were able to elevate each other to success by playing smart.
