Comment One:
Three Stars of the Game

1 - Xena (ANC)
Xena didn't like the Raiders taking the lead, so before the first period could end, she got her fifth goal of the season at 17:09. She also contributed to the game-winning goal in the third period and had one more shot on goal on a hit, as well as won 64% of her face-offs, proving her place on the first line for Armada and a promising center.

2 - Bust (ANC)
Bust was not a bust this game, helping the Armada with the game-winning goal in the third period at 9:09. Bust also had five other shots on goal and helped on the penalty kill.

3 - Dean Colt III (ANC)
Dean Colt III helped tie the Armada up with the Raiders with ten seconds into the second period. He also had two other shots on goal, two hits, and succeeded on 62.5% of his face-offs (15/24).

Comment Two:
Armada vs. Raiders Mid-Season Match-up

Armada came into this game 1-2 against the Raiders this season, so they were eager to tie it up. The Raiders were coming off a win from Armada just four days prior and had won their last three games. Armada had won their last game against the Whalers by only one goal and had lost their last three games prior, the last game lost to the Raiders. The two teams are the furthest apart in the SMJHL, but this back and forth win and lose game have possibly made both friendly rivals as they've been also teetering between fifth and sixth place in the league, vying for the playoffs. This game brought out the best in lesser-scoring Raiders like Mr. Faceoffs and Thomas Speardane, while the Armada relied on Xena and bust who both had good seasons last year, along with leading point-getter Dean Colt III this season.

Comment Three:
Goal of the Game

After eight minutes into the third period, both teams were looking to make the game-winning goal. It started with Xena intercepting a pass by Desmond Carey in the neutral zone and then passing to Eero Niemi who faked a shot before passing to Xena to make her shot that was blocked once again by Desmond Carey. The puck bounced off Carey's stick, and it went near the Armada net where Niemi took his shot but it missed the net. The puck free again and too far from Justin Wills, it was quickly picked up by Bust's stick who took a shot on instinct, proving practice makes perfect with the game-winning goal in the back of the Raiders' net. This put Armada at 2-2 against the Raiders in the season thus far.

Raiders Hot Start vs Armada's Slow and Steady

For most of the first period, it looked like this was shaping up to be another easy win for the Raiders who were already up by a game in the season series between these two teams. They had a hot start, scoring two goals in the first, one of those goals coming on a Power Play after an Armada double minor for roughing from Karl Von Wittelsbach. This is why you make sure not to draw blood, kids. However, the Armada didn't let the period pass them by without responding with Xena tallying their first goal of the game at 17:09. The Raiders wouldn't score again for the rest of the game, meanwhile the Armada proved that slow and steady really does win the race, scoring one goal per period for the rest of the game, allowing them to walk away with a 3-2 victory and split their record against the Raiders right down the middle.

How Did Penalties Impact the Game?

The short answer? They didn't change the final outcome of the game at all. There were eight penalties in the game, five taken by the Armada and three by the Raiders. The Raiders had a slightly more effective Power Play than the Armada, scoring one power play goal on five attempts, resulting in a Power Play that was twenty percent effective. This beat the Armada power play, which went zero for three making it zero percent effective. However, the Armada still managed to win the game. Had the Raiders not scored on any of their power play attempts, the Armada's lead would have been larger, but they didn't need to beat them by more than one point to win the game. Karl Von Wittelsbach was the game's worst offender, taking two penalties--a minor and a double minor. Armada management and coaching staff may want Von Wittelsbach to work on his discipline a little, but in this case, it was no harm no foul.

PK:                  raiders 18/21 (85.7%) Armada 13/16 (76.9%)

This was the fourth meeting of the Armada and Raiders. Each team is 1-1 at home with three games to go. Both wins for the Armada have been low scoring affairs, 3-1 and then tonight 3-2. Halifax has outscored Anchorage 14-11 on the season, but scored 11 of those goals in their two wins alone. When their offense is clicking, the Raiders dominated the Armada.
A fascinating detail from the season series: each team has played three different goalies during the season series. Anchorage’s Larry Atta is the only goalie to appear in three out of four games, with a 1-2 records in two starts and one relief effort to Hank Scorpio in their 6-4 loss.

The head to head stats tell an interesting story: both teams have 102 shots on net, though Halifax has been more productive, both at even strength and on special teams. Halifax converted 3/13 powerplay attempts and killed 85.7% of Anchorage’s powerplays. Halifax also took significantly more penalties through four games (42-26) and significantly outhit the Armada (71-51). This aggressive, physical game has not seemed to hurt the Raiders, as Anchorage was only able to score three times with the man advantage on 21 tries (14.3%). This will need to improve for them in the coming games.

The teams will meet three straight times from Day 33 to 37, twice in Anchorage (Games 67 and 73) and once in Halifax (Game 69), to finish their seven-game series.

Nathan Cosco, despite only appearing in two games for the Raiders, was a standout performer, going 2-0 with a 2.5 GAA and a .918 save percentage. Look to him to get the starts against Anchorage the rest of the way.
As you would expect, the Kovacs brothers, Oliver and Kristoff, picked up where they left off last season. In the season series, the brothers have each scored four points, for a total line of 1-7-8 with three power play points. Their frequent linemate, Vince Rieper, has two goals and an assist. This trio, whether playing together or with Crush Cile replacing Oliver on the top line, will factor heavily in the rest of the series.

A surprise performer against Anchorage has been forward Richard Metcalf, Jr. The third year player has a goal, three assists, and a +4 rating going into Game 5 of the season series.

Centers Dean Colt III and Xena lead Anchorage. The pair has four of the Armada’s 11 goals against Halifax, and will likely have to keep up their high level of play if Anchorage is to be competitive in the last three games of the series. They are both also among the few players without a minus rating through four games.

On Xena’s right wing is Eero Niemi, who is tied with her and rookie Mika Mayfield for the team lead in points (4). Niemi’s paired smooth passing (1-3-4) with a strong defensive game (+2), though he could stand to shoot a little more (7 shots in four games).
