Vancouver Whalers : 1 - Halifax Raiders : 0

This game got off to a wild and quick start after an early slap shot from the blue line that hit the post by defender Tauras Karazija of the Whalers only 17 seconds into the game. Unfortunately for the Raiders, that shot off the post bounced straight through Pierre Laroche-Durocher's feet to Whaler Center Carlo Russo opening up the scoring early. Pierre Laroche-Durocher seemed increasingly frustrated with himself on the bench after the play also struggling to open a new bottle of lemon lime Gatorade, eventually removing his gloves to conquer the task.

Vancouver Whalers : 1 - Halifax Raiders : 1

The Raiders tie up the game a few minutes later with the help of third line rookie Defender (and future San Francisco Pride Prospect) Ray Bork. After Bork jumped into Whaler Winger Jack Kennedy's shooting lane his shot missed the net by what seemed like a mile. The puck wrapped around the boards and was retrieved by Raider Winger Vince Rieper. He and linemate Winger Oliver Kovacs give and go up the ice like magicians to tie up the game.

Shots for this period are 10 for Vancouver Whalers versus 8 for Halifax Raiders.

Vancouver Whalers : 1 - Halifax Raiders : 2.

After a Carlo Russo lazily dumped the puck, it was picked up by Raider Winger Rainbow Dash and her and her linemates put on a passing clinic. Tape to tape seven times before a missed wrister by Dash quickly picked up and scored by Raider Center Mr. Faceoffs in stunning fashion. Also stunning fans and teammates alike, after performing a 10 out of 10 backflip on the ice in celebration of his goal.

Vancouver Whalers : 2 - Halifax Raiders : 2.

Less than two minutes later the Whalers tie it up. After first taking advantage of a bad line change by the Raiders, an additional sloppy rebound by Raider Goaltender Kata Vilde off the Whaler shot by fourth line Center Crystal Roy. Whaler fourth line Winger Noah Nowes put it away, powerfully scooping it up top over the Vilde's glove popping Vilde's water bottle all the way into the stands hitting a man in the face focused on eating his BBQ nachos. The puck then luckily bounced off his head into his beer making for a nice souvenir and spilling very little beer.

Code:

Vancouver Whalers : 3 - Halifax Raiders : 2.

After Raider Mr. Faceoffs runs into the mystery Referee losing the puck. The Raiders capitalize, scoring again just over a minute after tieing it up to take their second lead of the game. During the TV timeout Mr. Faceoff is seen chatting with one of the ice scrappers who moments later "accidentally" bulldozed the same mysterious Referee.

Goal Third Period Goals Goal

Shots for this period are 7 for Vancouver Whalers versus 12 for Halifax Raiders.

Vancouver Whalers : 3 - Halifax Raiders : 3.

Just thirty seconds into the third period. Raider Mr. Faceoffs, evens it up with a wicked wrister. This time electing not to perform a celebratory backflip - rather joining with teammate Ray Bork to perform a Besti squat, a spread-eagle like move where the skater glides on two outside edges with knees bent.

Vancouver Whalers : 3 - Halifax Raiders : 4.

The teams decide to switch the lead again, this time the Raiders Winger Oliver Kovas scores SHORTHANDED  Ahh . After Whaler Buck Maverick's silly pass attempt was intercepted by Raider Defender Pierre Laroche-Durocher, a quick couple of passes back and fourth ending with the puck in the back of the Whaler's net and a single tear down Maverick's rosy cheek.

1:39 of 3rd period - Shot by Oliver Kovacs.
1:39 of 3rd period - Goal by Oliver Kovacs - Vancouver Whalers : 3 - Halifax Raiders : 4.

Vancouver Whalers : 4 - Halifax Raiders : 4.

Can't stop, won't stop - San Francisco prospect and seemingly future All-Star SHL Winger Luke Thomason put on a dazzling display, skating past three Raiders after picking it up the neutral zone then scoring backhand... after a spinorama, evening the score once again. Thomason was seen afterwards blowing a kiss to fellow Pride prospect and current Raider Ray Bork.

5:21 of 3rd period - Goal by Luke Thomason - Vancouver Whalers : 4 - Halifax Raiders : 4.

Vancouver Whalers : 4 - Halifax Raiders : 5.

Not to be outdone by fellow San Fransisco Pride prospects, Raider Winger Vince Rieper gets the game winning goal half way through the third period. The Raider's successfully performing the flying V straight out of the Mighty Ducks movie, it was truly a sight to behold. Fans were curious why they would try something so odd on the powerplay but hey, I guess it worked.

Play of the Game

The Whalers' second goal of the game demonstrated all-around 110% effort and was a perfectly executed zone entry. Fourth lines are often undervalued and underrated, but Noah Nowes sure knew how to take advantage of the out-of-position Raiders, who were just coming off of a line change. The chip pass into the zone was beautiful and caught the backchecking Halifax skaters off guard, uncertain momentarily as to the puck's location. Buck Maverick, a defender, jumped up into the rush and grabbed the puck along the wall. Reading this move, centerman Crystal Roy fell back to Maverick's usual spot and was waiting for a pass back, unleashing a laser from the blueline worthy of a powerplay quarterback. Noah Nowes, who started the play, had followed through and was waiting in the slot, forgotten by the opposing defenders. It was an easy, but well-earned, tap-in from there.

Prospect Watch

Whalers Shaquille Derisraka, Lillie Jacobs, Tauras Karazija (2 A), Barret McCarthy (2 PIM)

raiders Mister McCarty, Kristers Dzelme, Bernard Brendorowski, Rainbow Dash (1 A, 4 PIM), Mikael Choybuk, Ray Bork

The Prospect of the game has to be Tauras Karazija, who notched 2 assists in the match, including setting up a pivotal 4-4 tying goal before Halifax scored on the powerplay to seal the match. Karazija also has a primary assist on the first goal of the game. It appears that a lot of the Vancouver offense in this lost stemmed from the prospect.

Also of note in the game was Rainbow Dash, the highly touted prospect who went 1st overall in the SMJHL Entry Draft at the beginning of the season. Dash put up 1 assist in the second period before running into penalty problems with back to back minors at the start of the third. Barret McCarthy also had a minor penalty in the game.

3 Stars of the Night

1st Star:Vince Rieper 2 Goals, 3 shots
Pretty easy to see why he would the first star of the night. Vince scored both the first goal and the last goal for his team which also happened to be the game winning goal for the Raiders over the Whalers. He played real well and his 3rd shot was just a hair from going in as well

2nd Star: Mr. Faceoffs 2 Goals, 2 shots
Mr. Faceoffs despite his name lit the lamp twice that day, maybe he should even change his name to Mr. Snipe as he was 100% with his shots for the night. He also had an impressive 16/22 faceoff winning percentage and scored key goals in the 5-4 victory over the Whalers

3rd Star: Oliver Kovacs: 1 Goal, 2 assists, 1 shot
Kovacs had the most points in the game and had real nice assists to help his team outscore the Whalers of course. He scored a short handed goal, secondary assisted the powerplay game winning goal, and secondary assisted Vince's 1st goal of the game. He had a fantastic night overall and deserved the 3rd star for sure.

Unsung Hero
For me, the unsung hero goes to rookie Luke Thomason on the Vancouver Whalers who has been expected to be a key performer for the Whalers last season and in this game he had 1 goal, 1 assist night, as well as having a big check in the game to keep the Whalers alive. Thomason was the only player on the Whalers with a 2 point night as the Whalers offense came from all different lines aside from himself of course. If Thomason can continue his offensive production, the Whalers will become that much more of a dangerous offensive threat especially considering how deep their team goes forward wise.

Turning point of the game: Bad penalty by goalie
[Image: tXFHyjn.jpg]
The turning point of the game turns out to be a penalty by Leitner who was the goalie for the Vancouver Whalers. Leitner has a history of slashing anyone in his crease since before he was even drafted and that's exactly what happened late in the 3rd period. At 7:55 of the third, Leitner was given a slashing minor where David Kastrba served the penalty. And look and behold what occurred out of it; the game winning powerplay goal for the Halifax Raiders. This was a bad turning point in the game and one where the Vancouver Whalers couldn't recover afterwards

Goalie Showdown

Whalers Johannes Leitner - 18 saves on 23 shots, 0.783 SV%, L
raiders Kata Vilde - 20 saves on 24 shots, 0.833 SV%, W

With roughly the same shots faced, the Vancouver Whalers v Halifax Raiders game provides a nice set-up to look at the performances of the two men in net. Kata Vilde walked away with the win in this game, in large parts due to a solid performance across the whole game. Facing 7, 10 and then 7 shots again, Vilde was consistent in only allowing 1, 2 and 1 goals in the three periods. Keeping the Raiders in the game late into the third under pressure, Vilde largely stole the win. While Leitner, on the other hand, had the win in his grasp, but allowing 3 goals in the third ultimately cost the Whalers the W (although they don't need more of those). To be fair, some defensive breakdowns occurred in the 3rd, as the Whalers allowed 12 shots on net - the highest shots allowed by either team in any period.

Now this game had its fair share of celebrations, or "cellies" as they are colloquially referred to by the youths. And I think these "cellies" have no place in today's game. Whatever happened to the traditional scooping ice or sitting on your stick like it's a horse? The superman dive, the middle finger to the fans? Well, I guess these are lost arts. Call me an old fart but what is this spread eagle thing with Bork and Mr. Faceoffs? The ice is not an arena for sexual moves, it is an arena for the respectable game of ice hockey to be played. And I am saddened by these actions.

Game seven of week one, Vancouver Whalers Vs Halifax Raiders. Monday, September 10, 2018 Halifax Raiders came in on top with a close win by a difference of one goal. No surprise there because all 3 stars when to Halifax players tonight. Most impressive work goes to the one and only Vince Rieper with 3 shots, 2 of which were goals. He scored the first goal of the night for Halifax, getting them that 1-1 tie. As well as the Winning Goal to ensure their victory of the night. Vince has always been a force to reckon with. But tonight, he really showed us why.
