MONTREAL MILITIA 3 VS COLORADO RAPTORS 1
Game 1 Link

Welcome to game 1 of the S43 SMJHL new season. Tonight we had Montreal visiting Colorado as the Raptors look to start the season off strong on home ice against the travelling Militia.

Period 1:

To get right to the action we start it off in the first period where just 20 seconds after puck drop defenseman Charlie Schieck scores for Montreal making it 1-0 for the Militia and stunning the crowd.

0:18 of 1st period - Shot by Mason Hudson.
0:18 of 1st period - Shot Blocked by Sachimo Zoidberg Jr..
0:20 of 1st period - Shot by Charlie Schieck.
0:20 of 1st period - Goal by Charlie Schieck - Montreal Militia : 1 - Colorado Raptors : 0.

But the action didn’t stop there as just over 10 minutes later at 11:03 center Kevin Kazarian scored assisted by the same Charlie Schieck who stunned the crowd to start the game and Rafe Ulrich got his first point of the season:

10:30 of 1st period - Kevin Kazarian wins face-off versus Michael O'Dowd in Colorado Raptors zone.
11:03 of 1st period - Shot by Kevin Kazarian.
11:03 of 1st period - Goal by Kevin Kazarian - Montreal Militia : 2 - Colorado Raptors : 0.

The first period comes to a close with the score 2-0 Montreal and the shots favoring the Militia 8-5.

Period 2:

Off to the second period where Colorado woke up in a big way.

Alex Winters scores to make it 2-1. Alex was drafted in the 4th round, 30th overall and looking like a great steal of the S42 Draft for Colorado.  Assists to Philipp Winter and Jean-Pierre G.
In the second period Montreal took 4 minor penalties and Colorado outshot them and unbelievable 29-8! But somehow Montreal Petr Vrana stood on his head and the period ends 2-1 Montreal.

2:52 of 2nd period - Shot Misses the Net.
2:54 of 2nd period - Shot by Alex Winters.
2:54 of 2nd period - Goal by Alex Winters - Montreal Militia : 2 - Colorado Raptors : 1.

Period 3:

It seems like unfortunately for Colorado home fans the Raptors blew all their energy in the 2nd period. The only managed to get 2 more shots on goal in the 3rd period.

Montreal Militia Left Wing Jeff Brogen did add and empty net goal later in the 3rd to put the final nail in the coffin. Kevin Kazarian added his second point of the night assisting on the goal and Rafe Ulrich got his 2nd assist of the night for Montreal.

19:42 of 3rd period - Shot by Jeff Brogen.
19:42 of 3rd period - Goal by Jeff Brogen - Montreal Militia : 3 - Colorado Raptors : 1.

This was not a pretty win for Montreal being outshot 36-20 and letting 29 shots against in one period can’t happen.

Somehow the Militia went 8/8 on the Penalty Kill which saved the day. Vrana was a huge stud and stole this game for Montreal. This is just game 1 of a long season so it will be interesting to see how it plays out. If Montreal can get goaltending like this all season I like their odds. Colorado has to like their effort in the 2nd period after coming out sloppy in the first. That being said they need to be way more consistent as their 3rd period was very weak. We may see the coaching staff of both these teams mix up the lines a bit to see what kind of chemistry they can get moving forward.

Great first night of action here in the SMJHL!

3 STARS OF THE GAME!

1 - Petr Vrana (MTL) [Image: avatar_2472.png?dateline=1531223067]Played amazing with a 0.972 average. Helping kill 8 out of 8 penalties and stood on his head in the 2nd period.
2 - Charlie Schieck (MTL) [Image: rYyP3iq.png]1G, 1A and 22:15 played. Charlie was a monster on the ice and killed 7:38 of PK time which is unheard of. This number 1 D-Man should really have a huge year in Montreal.
3 - Kevin Kazarian (MTL) [Image: RMwxjMx.png?dateline=1531192749]1G, 1A 20:50 ice time and 7:34 PK time as well. He got the game winner and he just showed up when he had to. What more could you ask for, a complete player.

Bruiser of the Game

Yet again, there were two standouts, one representing each team, and we could not pick only one. So tonight's co-Bruisers of the Game are Montreal's second line left wing Rafe Ulrich, and Colorado's top line right wing Sulak O'Hritea. They each tallied a whopping 6 hits and garnered significant ice time, with both skaters clocking in at just over eighteen and a half minutes of ice time. O'Hritea did not have offensive contributions on the scoresheet and was a minus-1, but he threw 4 shots on net; he simply couldn't beat goalie. Ulrich was plus-1 and registered the same number of shots, receiving 2 assists on the evening.

Petr Vrana of the Montreal Militia was definitely the star of the game. In the second period Colorado outshot Montreal at an incredible 29-8 after Montreal’s 4 minor penalties. Petr really held his own with an outstanding 0.972 average. He killed all 8 out of 8 penalties in the second period, and really stood out tonight. If Montreal keeps this kind of goal tending up, this season is looking bright for them…and even brighter for Petr Vrana. I could see him being a top pick goaltender in the SHL draft. No surprise that Petr came on top with the first star of the game. Well deserved.
