Game 2: Anchorage Armada @ Detroit Falcons

Season 43 began for these two squads in Detroit. Both the Armada and Falcons finished last season in the middle of the pack and will be looking to take that next step towards taking home the Four Star Cup here. Anchorage, as in most of their road games, took a long journey to reach Detroit, and, despite their name, most definitely could not go by ship. Instead, they had to go by air, which is the domain of the Falcons, believed to be named after the bird of prey that goes by the very same name.

Starting in net for the hometown Falcons is reigning goaltender of the year Cedric Robinson. In front of him is the fearsome pairing of Tig Murphy and Wolfhard Richter. Lining up on the wings are Xavier Paquette and Hippo Passamus, centered by the one and only Marc Paligma. For the bad guys, ol' Benjamin Blue was the starter with nobility on the blueline in Jordan Von Matt and Karl Von Wittelsbach while wings Muhammad McLovin (dork) and Doug Dimmadome (owner of the Dimmesdale Dimmadome) were centered by eightieth generation hockey player Jax Aitokallio.

In the first period... oh man the Falcons came out flying. The Armada were struggling to do anything, like dodo bird because they couldn't fly with their birdly cousins. The Falcons pelted Benjamin Blue with shots early and just over a minute into the game, Detroit second line winger Tobias Viklund scored a big goal to open up the season in style. And no, the Falcons did not let up. They kept going and going until Paligma set up his winger Xavier Paquette with a beautiful pass, which was deposited into the net to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead, one they would take into the second period.

The second period started and the Armada decided it was time to start playing. They actually got some shots on Robinson and began to even up the shot totals. And their efforts would pay off midway through the period as Bust scored the squad's first goal of the season to cut the Detroit lead in half. But this lead would last just thirteen seconds as Paligma promptly won the ensuing faceoff, leading to a quick Xavier Paquette goal, his second of the game to put Detroit back up by two. Anchorage continued to control play in the second but could not get a goal for their efforts.

The third period began and the Armada continued to overpower the Falcons but Cedric Robinson continued to shut his opponents down. Well, that is until 12 minutes into the period as Muhammad McLovin found the back of the net to cut the Falcon lead in half. And let up, the Armada did not. Desperate to erase the Falcon lead, Anchorage kept fighting. And with just over two minutes to go in the game, they were able to tie things up as Jax Aittokallio scored the tying goal thanks to slick passing from the Vons. Perhaps frustrated by the loss of the lead and therefore loss of his game winning goal, Tobias Viklund tried to steal Stolp Skottson from the Armada but the referees didn't let that go very far, charging Viklund with a double minor. The score would remain 3-3 as the third period ended.

With a man advantage, Anchorage came out into the extra frame ready for blood. Controlling possession from the get-go, they patiently searched for an opportunity to take advantage of the powerplay. And take advantage, they did. Second line defenseman Rex Kirkby let out a rifling shot from the point that made it past Cedric Robinson as the Armada picked up the come from behind, overtime victory!

Final Score: Anchorage Armada 4 - 3 Detroit Falcons

Play of the Game

The tying goal for the Armada was their third tally of evening, and what a superbly executed play it was. Jax Aittokallio, the Anchorage top line center, earned his first goal of the season with a beauty. A forward pass from Karl Von Wittelsbach allowed Aittokallio to get behind the defense and fork the puck over to right wing Jordan Von Matt. Von Matt demonstrated why he is a skilled playmaker in the league by wisely returning the pass to Aittokallio, in a textbook tic-tac-toe conversion. Detroit's defensemen could only flail helplessly on the ground as a bewildered Cedric Robinson pawed at the air, unable to recover. The timing of this goal could not have been better, as Anchorage had been down by one with about two minutes left in the game. Von Matt was crucial in not just this deciding moment, but also in the Armada's offense as whole; he registered two assists on the night.

There is no question that Xavier Paquette of the Detroit Falcons is the first star of the game. Althougth Detroit fell short to Anchorage…Xavier really carried the falcons. First period and there’s a pass to Xavier Paquette. Xavier Paquette loses puck. Free Puck Retrieved by Marc Palicka for Detroit Falcons. Shot by Marc Palicka. Deflect By Xavier Paquette. And finally Xavier Paquette sinks that second goal for the Detroit Falcons at 18:10 in the first period. Not long after there is a pass to Xavier Paquette in neutral zone. Pass to Marc Palicka in Anchorage Armada zone. Pass to Xavier Paquette, Shot by Xavier Paquette, who scores his second goal at 9:54 in the second period, giving Detroit the lead. Detroit may have lost this game, but Xavier really pulled through for his team, and deserves that first star.
