Militia Montreal Militia 1 v Falcons Detroit Falcons 2
Shots: Militia 19 v Detroit 22

Three Stars

  1. Falcons Hippo Passamus
  2. Falcons David Fantobens
  3. Militia Marco Raanteli
In a very close win, the visiting Detroit Falcons managed to squeak out the 2 points against the Montreal Militia. In a game decided largely be defense, the Militia were oh so close to defeating the Falcons until the dam gave way in the 3rd period. Before that, however, the Militia managed to outshot Detroit through the first 2 periods and only really lost the game in the 3rd. Let's break it down.

1st Period

In the first period, the teams were at a defensive stalemate. Only 8 shots were put on either net by both teams, an absurdly low count for these two offenses. Despite the low shot count overall, Montreal came out flying and managed to score their first (and, in the end, only) goal 43 seconds into the game.

After losing the draw in their own zone, some nice work by Veikko Toivanen takes the puck and two quick passes later Rafe Ulrich is off to the races into the Detroit zone. A nice play by Ulrich and its 1-0 Militia.

2nd Period

The 2nd period is a much more open affair. Shots go back and forth, with Montreal managing to get 12 on net and the Falcons put up 9. However, the goalies stand tall and managed to withstand the barrage of by either team (or each team's sloppy defensive play, depending on how you look at it).

There's some penalty trouble through, including a nasty boarding hit by Hippo Passamus that both enrages Militia fans for the hit while Detroit fans can't believe its a penalty. Some controversy in the air and the tilt has gotten pretty nasty. Earlier in the period Daniel Daniil for Montreal serves a slashing call after a nasty looking whack on the Detroit defender.

3rd Period

In the third, Detroit proves too much for the Militia and breaks through. They pepper Monreal with 9 shots while only facing 3 from the home team. It all starts with an early 3rd period goal to tie the game.

During a powerplay Detroit has Fantobens set up in front of the net. Using a nice screen play, Tobias Viklund shoots the puck right at David Fantobens for Detroit. With a nifty deflection, Fantobens manages to redirect it past the Militia netminder Petr Vrana, who is blind to the shot with the traffic in front of the net. All in all a nice play by Detroit to tie up the game 1-1 and start the 3rd period barrage.

7 minutes later, the Falcons are still forcing the play in the Montreal zone. Xavier Paquette hammers a shot from the point, trying his best Crutchfield impersonation, and Hippo Passamus, while moving laterally across the Montreal zone, tips the puck past the Militia goaltender. Two deflections later and Detroit is ahead, 2-1. Falcons are also quick to congratulate rookie Riley Rush on his first career point on the secondary assist @Rush.

Turning Point Of The Night

This game was a battle all night long and Montreal had a 1-0 slim lead heading into the third period. They were the better team through 40 minutes and looked to hold onto the win in the third. But our turning point of the game was just 1:01 into the third period when Viktor Valentine takes a Slashing minor sending Detroit to their third power play of the night. This time they cashed in on their advantage as David Fantobens scored his 4th goal of the year assisted to Tobias Viklund and Tig Murphy only 9 seconds later at 1:10 of the period.

Montreal has taken many undisciplined penalties this year and this one ended up costing them as Detroit rode this momentum in the third and scored a second and game winning goal at 8:21 to take the win 2-1 in this close battle. These teams are fighting for a playoff spot and Detroit looks to be a lot more comfortable right now so Montreal needs to address some of their issues if they hope to make a run this season.

Poopity Scoop here to talk about a tremendous game. This was a fun one. I had two big hits so my presence was felt and we really made Montreal scared. Charlie Schieck, who acted like a big boss last game by cheating with a knife was like a little baby here. He had -1 rating, played over 20 minutes but literally did nothing out there. That was funny, this guy who is supposed to be good. However the real star here was Ricky Lewis, the under-appreciated GOAT. I'm always telling Cedric Robinson that Ricky is better but nobody listens to me. Well, look at these results. I think the proof is in the proverbial pudding here.

Bruiser of the Game

Well, this was not a game of much hitting; Montreal's Dinars Briedis led both teams with only 3 hits. Briedis, a 3rd pairing defenseman, logged 18:06 minutes, and in spite of his team losing, he kept a positive plus-minus. His willingness to initiate contact may have been his pairing did not end the night with a minus rating, and like most of our Bruisers, he kept it clean, staying out of the penalty box. He logged only 1:04 of penalty killing time, but with a solid peripheral performance, perhaps he will earn more in time.
