Montreal at Anchorage Game 103

Tonight the Militia flew all the way to Anchorage to play the struggling Armada. Montreal and Anchorage both are not playing very hot this season but Montreal still has a chance to make the playoffs and are fighting for the final spot.

Let's head right to the action in the first period! Roughly thirteen minutes into the period Willy Mack intercepts a pass in the neutral zone by Stolp Skottson. He passes it to Daniel Daniil who misses on his first shot but gets his own rebound before anyone on Anchorage can touch him and he puts in the back of the net for the first goal of the game! 1-0 Montreal. This was the second shot on goal for Montreal and they didn't manage another one all period.

The first period ends 1-0 Montreal with shots 6-2 for Anchorage. Montreal looks really sleepy from the flight up to Alaska. They better come out with more energy in the final 40 mins if they want to win this game.

We go straight to the action in the second period. 3:41 in and Montreals Marco Raanteli gets a hooking penalty sending Anchorage to the Power Play. Jordan Von Matt scores a beauty play after some great passing by Karl Von Wittelsbach and rookie Xena gets her first assist of the season on the play.

Montreal didn't let the goal get them down and played strong the rest of the way. Shots finished 7-3 for Montreal in the period as they hunkered down defensively to slow down the Armada attack. We have a 1-1 tie heading into the final period!

The action was back and forth in the first 10 minutes of the third but Daniel Daniil put a stop to that scoring his second of the night for Montreal at 9:26 in. Assists to Dinars Briedis and Willie Fisterbottom. A great night overall for Daniil. Kevin Kazarian added his 10th goal of the season 3 minutes later to put the icing on this cake and Montreal takes the game 3-1 with the final shots being 10-9 in the 3rd and 19-18 overall for Montreal.

Three Stars Of The Night

1 - Daniel Daniil (MTL) - Easy choice her as Daniil scored the first two goals including the game winner for Montreal. He was +2 on the night with 6 of the 19 total shots for his team and 4 hits. All this in only 14:56 of ice time. He did work on the Power Play and Penalty kill as well. Great night!
2 - Willie Fisterbottom (MTL) - Rookie defenseman Willie Fisterbottom had a great assist on the second goal of the night and finished +2 with 3 hits. He had 17:02 time on ice and killed 0:46 of Penalty Kill time. This rookie has been great all season, look for big things in his future.
3 - Kevin Kazarian (MTL) - Star forward for the Militia Kevin Kazarian did what he always does and contributed offensively for 1 goal late in the third to put the nails in the coffin of the Armada. He was +1 and had 3 shots in 20:29 of ice time. He also was a beast on the penalty kill playing 4:33 of ice time.

Overall this was a pretty slow paced game but there was a few beautiful goals and some rookies played great for both teams as they look to make their mark leading up to the SHL draft.

Let's talk about that game winning goal scored by Daniel Daniil in the third period. This was a nice nice goal if I've ever seen one. So what happened here is Dinars Breidis got the puck and he was hanging down by the boards along the goal line. He waited a split second and saw Daniil streaking in from the blue line. He hit Daniil right on the tape as if he passed it with a laser and Daniil took a one timer. But the one time missed the net because of Simon T. But Daniil retrieved the loose puck, came back, and popped it in the net and the Militia never gave up the lead again.

Bruiser of the Game

Tonight's Bruiser of the Game is Montreal Militia left wing Daniel Daniil. Another character who is buried on the 3rd line, yet impresses anyways, Daniil led both squads in hits with 4. He scored 2 goals for the night, throwing a ton of rubber on net, 6 shots on goal. Daniil did not shy away from checking at every opportunity, but he kept it clean, staying out of the penalty box. He mans the point on the power play, but with his physicality, he could be looking at time on the penalty killing unit in the future. He is an excellent example of what it means to be a two-way forward in modern hockey.

This was a rough night for Anchorage Armada, but I have to say, Montreal really earned this win. Which is why it comes as no surprise that all three stars went to Militia players. At number 1 we have Daniel Daniil who scored the very first goal of the night at 13 minutes into the first period. He ALSO scored the second goal for Montreal at 9 minutes into the 3rd and final period. He really carried the team tonight scoring more than half the goals. Second Star went to Willie Fisterbottom who was the main support of this team with his great assist of the night. And finally, the third star went to Kevin Kazarian who scored the final and game winning goal for Montreal ending the night with a score of 3-1.
