PGS Game 68: Kelowna Knights vs. Anchorage Armada

Well here we have a game between two very northwestern squads. The Armada are looking like the clear weak link of the SMJHL this season but will try to pull of an upset here in front of the hometown crowd. The Knights were not a pre-season favorite but have emerged as a solid team and come into this game looking to build upon a solid start to the season.

For the visiting side, we have Shouta Aizawa centering Spazzy McFee and Boris Denisovich while Greg Connors and Rasmus Rasmus man the blueline. And in net is no other than Mark McFleury, who is the product of a genetic combination of Ronald McDonald and Marc-Andre Fleury, for those of you who didn't know.

And for the hosting Armada looking to pull of the upset, we have Jax Aittokallio centering Bust and Muhammad "Such a Fucking Dork" McLovin. At defense Anchorage has Jordan von Matt and highly touted prospect Rex Kirkby, who will do their best to protect goaltender Benjamin Blue.

The opening faceoff was won by Jax Aittokallio and some back and forth play ensued. But six minutes into the game, the Armada's Takehiko Yukimura had the whistle blown on him for high sticking, giving the Knights the first man advantage of the game. And the favorites too advantage quickly, with Greg Connors scoring just six seconds into the powerplay to give Kelowna a one goal advantage.

Not three minutes later, the Knights found the back of the net again. This time, first line winger Spazzy McFee put it past Benjamin Blue for his sixth goal of the season to double his team's lead. Seeming to be yet another case of the Armada being beat up by the rest of the league, perhaps the Knights started to relax a bit too much as not more than a minute passed before Jax Aittokallio cut the Knights' lead in half. Later in the frame, Armada defenseman Jordan von Matt got called for a tripping penalty but the Knights couldn't do anything with this powerplay as the first period ended with a 2-1 advantage for Kelowna.

The second period began with the Armada seemingly out for blood, playing a great all-around game. This paid off for them when, seven minutes in, Bust picked up a goal of his own to tie the game up at 2. But the Armada didn't stop here... They kept at it, determined to take the lead and the Knights had no answer. As hard as he tried, McFleury couldn't keep Kelowna tied up for long as Muhammad McLovin gave the Armada a 3-2 lead with just four minutes to go in the second.

The third period began with the Knights having a bit of an edge, trying to erase the Armada's lead. But that momentum would come to a quick halt when Kelowna's Gints Krumins was called for a hooking penalty less than three minutes into the final frame. Anchorage came back alive here and really dug down defensively, limiting Kelowna's opportunities the rest of the way en route to pulling off a 3-2 regulation victory.

Bruiser of the Game

Karl Von Wittelsbach took tonight's Bruiser of the Game award decisively, with a colossal 5 hits. Opponents could not escape from the Anchorage Armada 2nd pairing defenseman, as he was rolled out for 20:17, splitting time evenly with the top pairing. It is clear that his coaches respect his thunderous checking, as he received the second most penalty killing deployment of any player on his team. He may have sent a message to his opponents, but not to the refs, as he stayed out of the penalty box. Kelowna did not intiate much contact in the match, with no player on their team having more than 2 hits, so there were few deterrents to prevent Wittelsbach and his squad from finishing their checks.

3 Stars of the Game

1st star: Bust
Despite his name; Bust was definitely not a bust this game as he takes the 1st star of the night as he was a major offensive contributor this game as he had a direct hand in every Armada goal. He had 1 goal and 2 assists for a total of 3 points with 5 shots and was a +3. Jax Aittokallio deflected Bust's shot for the first goal of the game, he scored off the faceoff from Jax Aittokallio for his own goal, and he shot a rebound causing goal for Muahmmad McLovin. He was the key to this line winning the game for the Armada

2nd star: Muhammad McLovin
Muhammad McLovin was the other winger on Bust's line and scored the game winning goal in the second period which gave the Armada the win. He scored a goal and an assist while being all over the place with 2 shots, 3 hits, a shotblock, and was +3 on the night. He was the secondary assist to the deflection goal by Aittokallio and buried the rebound on the game winning goal.

3rd Star: Jax Aittokallio
Jax had an excellent game centering the line as he managed to go even with a 50 FO% as well as scoring a goal and an assist, being +3 along with his line, and had 2 shots to boot. Jax of course deflected the puck in for his first goal and won the faceoff to Bust for the second goal. He had an excellent night and one to remember in this young man's career.

Let’s go over the three stars of this game, shall we? All of which play for Anchorage Armada, which is no surprise here because they really owned the game this evening. At number one we have Bust, who really changed the course of this game with his goal in the second period. He gave Anchorage the chance to really come back strong into the third period and win the game. Second star goes to Muhammad McLovin who really put the nail in the coffin and scored that game winning goal for Anchorage. And finally, at number three we have Jax Aittokallio. This guy has been owning the season for Anchorage he scored the first goal for Armada tonight and really gave them a fighting chance to come out on top.
