PGS Game 123: Vancouver vs. Detroit
#1

Vancouver Whalers @ Detroit Falcons

This late season matchup was one where the Falcons looked to prove that, despite an inconsistent performance all season, they have what it takes to play with the big dogs of the SHL. And for Vancouver, this game was all about proving their dominance over the league and killing the hope of teams like Detroit looking for upsets.

This game started off quite even, with both sides getting decent chances. But it did not take long for one side to get on the board... Just over four minutes into the matchup, Vncouver's Herb Roberts picked up his thirteenth goal of the season to give the Whalers an early and important one goal lead. However, the Falcons didn't let this early goal take them out of the game or stop them from competing. They continued to play hard and when Lille Jacobs of the Whalers was called for a hooking minor late in the first frame, Detroit capitalized when Marcel Puhringer picked up a powerplay tally to tie the game at one, a score that would remain through the end of the period.

Energized by the late equalizer, the Falcons came out with some balls to the windows, balls to the walls hockey in the second. Just 25 seconds into the period, rookie defenseman Chuck Crutchfield put one past Leitner to give his team a one goal edge. And, perhaps due to some level of frustration, Whalers sniper Herb Roberts was whistled for interference just ten seconds later. And this man advantage would also be taken advantage of by Detroit and Hippo Passamus picked up a powerplay goal to double Detroit's lead.

Just like any great team, though, Vancouver didn't let a rough start get to them. They dug in after falling down 3-1 and it was not long before they cut the Falcon lead in half thanks to a Noah Nowes snipe. And just mere seconds after this goal, Aaron Freaking Rome of the Falcons was called for hooking and the Whalers went to work on the powerplay, which resulted in an Andrew Marting goal to tie the game up at 3. And as if tying it up wasn't enough, David Kastrba helped give the Whalers the lead midway through the second period, a lead they would carry into the third.

It was the third period that really defined this game, though. Despite being at home and despite already overcoming one one-goal deficit, the Falcons could not get much going against a much stronger Whalers side. And with five minutes to go, David Kastrba scored his second goal of the game to put the Whalers up by two, a lead that they would not let slip away.

Final Score: Whalers 5 @ Falcons 3 http://simulationhockey.com/games/smjhl/...L-123.html

Bruiser of the Game

Tonight's Bruiser of the Game was Vancouver's David Kastrba, who tallied 4 hits, placing him ahead of all others from both teams. The right winger was a ferocious presence not just because of his physicality, but also due to his offensive prowess. He held two goals to his name on the scoresheet, and managed to land his hits without drawing any penalty minutes that would cost his team. Kastrba is buried on Line 3 and does not receive any special teams time, but with performances such as tonight, coaches will be practically forced to up his ice time and give him a bigger role. This is his second Bruiser of the Game title, so it is clear that this is not just a one time occurrence.
