Pre-Game Notes

Home: Colorado Raptors (15-12-1)

Away: Vancouver Whalers (19-9-0)

The Whalers are coming into this game off of a 4-3 loss to St. Louis Scarecrows and were looking to rebound after the loss.

On the other hand, the Colorado Raptors are coming off of a 1-2 shootout win over the Halifax Raiders followed by a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Falcons.

While the Whalers will be looking to boost their morale and bounce back after the loss to their standing rivals, have no doubt that the Colorado Raptors will be eager to build on top of the ongoing momentum they currently have.

FIRST PERIOD:

Following the pre-game celebrations, the Whalers started the game early and with more fire in their bellies. After some back and forth from both teams it was the Whalers that got the first goal of the game. The Whalers were having a party in the Colorado goal zone. After some solid board play, the puck was loose in front of Scottey Crawfling’s crease, allowing Kade Riley to bury the goal seven minutes into the game. 1-0 (Jack Kennedy, Tauras Karazija). Whalers take the quick lead.

Right after the 15th minute mark Whalers Barrett McCarthy got penalized for hooking and Alex Winters got a decent shot on Johannes Leitner, followed by numerous rebounds towards the Whalers net. Geoff Moore was forced to make a diving skate save on a AJ Robertson shot to protect the one-goal lead.

Colorado finished the period with some pressure in the Whalers zone, but they could not capitalize with a tally. First-period ends there.
Overall, it was a good frame for the Whalers. Not quite a perfect twenty minutes, as the Raptors had many chances to score but could not bury it. Eriks Skalbergs, Tauras Karazija, and Geoff Moore had some opportunities, as well as some shorthanded rushes that should not necessarily happen. At the end of the day though, Vancouver is ahead after one period of play.

SECOND PERIOD:

To start the second period, the Colorado Raptors seemed to lack a step on the Whalers. Tony Pepperoni had a rush that was shut down, allowing Whalers to go the other way. The Whalers had some great offensive pressure in the Colorado zone, leading to Jack Kennedy goal (Assisted by David Kastrba and Barrett McCarthy). 2-0 Whalers in the 6th minute of the second period.

A few moments after the Whalers goal, Raptors forward Andrew Martin fired a bouncing puck towards Johannes Leitner, who could not get a piece of it, making it the first of the game for Raptors (Assisted by Jake Reid) and it is a one-goal game once again. The shot was a weird one and I’m not sure if Leitner can be blamed for this one. Definitely a tough one. 2-1 Whalers.

It was not long after the goal by Raptors that the game’s intensity really amped up. Raptors forward Gvidas Kazlauskas was hit by David Kastrba into the boards behind the net, an action that Kazlauskas was not too fond of. Kastrba and Kazlauskas engaged in some pushing and shoving while play continued on the other end of the ice. The momentum quickly swung towards the Whalers side and Herb Robert capitalized on a beautiful passing play by the Baltic Potato duo Eriks Skalbergs and Tauras Karazija. 3-1 Whalers.

The second period would come to a close and even though the Whalers hold a lead, the Colorado Raptors made this one entertaining hockey game heading into the final period. Vancouver Whalers outshot the Raptors 18-to-9 in the second period and had the bulk of the scoring chances.

THIRD PERIOD:

Colorado starts off the third period with some good chances but turned aside by Johannes Leitner. Then, on a drive by the top line once again, Alex Winters attempts a backhand towards Leitner in front of the net, but it deflects off of Carlo Russo, right into the Whalers net, but after the video replay the goal was refused. The score stands 3-1 Whalers.

The poor play started for the Raptors twelve or so minutes of the third period, but shortly after the Martin-Winter-Winters line seemed to bring some life into the team, making some good passes in the Whalers zone. Andrew Martin won the face-off against Shaquille Derisraka and with 6 minutes to go in the period makes a picture-perfect backhand, saucer pass to Alex Winters. Could not have placed that puck better on Winters' stick. Alex Winters wristed a shot towards the net that was a thing of beauty. 3-2 Whalers.

The game had its ups and downs but the score stayed the same through the third period. And that would be all, the Vancouver Whalers defeat the Colorado Raptors 3-2 in a back and forth match.
