Welsh forward tries his luck in North America

RW - Griffith Cadwalader

As another season comes to its conclusion, a new set of players starts to reevaluate their achievements and the route their careers seem bound to take. For Aberystwyth native Griffith Cadwalader, the end of another successful year in the British juniors has driven his mindset to the realisation that play in his native land may not be enough for his ambitions and skillset. For this, he's set to travel to North America and try his luck at cracking an SMJHL roster as a starting point for a career that will, hopefully, culminate with time up in the North American majors.

Managed by the same agent who helped former Calgary Dragon and three time SHL champion Ferdy Pergher achieve his ice hockey dream, Cadwalader believes he has what it takes to impress in another continent. "The level of play may be higher, but ultimately, we're talking about the same game", he said. "Adapting to a new place and a new culture will not be enough of an obstacle to stop me from showing my skills and cementing my place as one of the most exciting prospects in the world of ice hockey. I have full confidence in myself and in the people working with me."

A versatile player who has had his moments playing both as a right wing and a defenseman in his early days, Cadwalader's lack of physicality ultimately stopped him from acting as a reliable man on the blueline. That is not to say, however, that the experience and skillset he developed playing from the back have gone to waste. Rather, he's grown to apply this defensive knowledge in the advanced roles he's filled in recent years, thus establishing himself as one of the most exciting two-way players in Europe. Strength, however, is not the only facet of Griffith's game that has been criticised by scouts in the past. His below averaged skating has also proven to be a barrier in his attempts at cracking the highest levels of ice hockey, but this seems to have been somewhat remedied in the last two years, thanks to an intense training regime that saw him double the hours spent on ice with specialists.

While criticism has always been present in the path of this young man, praise has been as common, if not even more so. Adding up to his two-way instincts described above, Griffith Cadwalader has always had a knack for finding the right teammate and racking up the assists. This is not only possible thanks to the precision with which he moves the puck, but also due to his well-developed hockey IQ.

All in all, Griffith has made himself a name in his home nation as a high effort player willing to take the sacrifices to perform for the team on both ends of the ice. While his capacity to make an immediate impact is much a doubt due to the low level of competition he's faced in the last couple of seasons and while his potential may not be on pair with some of the legends we've seen grow in the SMJHL of past and present, that is not to say he won't have a successful career. It is realistic to expect him to be a solid top 6 forward or a prolific third pair player in a couple of years, but whatever teams decide to place the Welshman in their ranks will need the patience and coaching to watch him blossom into an appropriate major league asset.
