Getting Started

The door creaked open. Erik Chisling, dressed in business casual with a pressed dark green shirt and gray khakis with a pair of sharp black shoes, reached in and flipped the lights witch. The room was empty, but clearly hadn’t been that way for long. You could see holes on the walls where there were frames hanging and there were still discarded papers in the desk. Erik tossed them into the recycling bin, walked back and shut the door. He returned to the desk and sat down. He placed his bag down onto the contemporary carpet next to his desk and retrieved his laptop. He placed the PC on the desk and powered it on.

NBC Sports had the headline:
“Mass Exodus in New England? Anger towards SHL Board of Commissioners? Chisling Named GM in New England.”

Erik sighed. The mouse cursor moved to the top right of the window and clicked the X to close that window. His scouting sheet, budgets and more rose to the forefront. He thought about it – that was sort of what he had to do in general in his mind. Take all the white noise that was going on regarding the transition and just click the X. Focus on what matters - the players, the fans and the New England Wolfpack. He can’t change what others say or what they feel about the transition. What’s done is done, and he remains steadfast in his determination to bring the Wolfpack back to being a perennial Challenge Cup Contender.

Unfortunately, that’s not imminent in any way and he’ll have his work cut out for him. A sudden series of three knocks rang loudly from the door. “Mr. Chisling, your belongings.”

“Come on in.”

An intern pushed a cart with four to five boxes into his office. “Thanks Jake.”

“No problem Mr. Chisling.”

Erik walked over and opened up a box. It had his old Manhattan Rage jersey framed. He hung it on the wall next to the door, and then did the same with his Calgary Dragons jersey, both from many seasons ago. Within were many notable SHL memorabilia and keepsakes… A signed stick by the entire S9 Calgary Dragons Challenge Cup team that he was a part of. His S9 Challenge Cup ring. A replica of his Scott Stevens trophy. All were to be on display in his office. Now that his accomplishments and accolades were displayed clearly for all to see, his dedication to the team needed to be addressed.

“Jake, do you know when the painter will be here to finish the walls?”

“They’re scheduled for around 10 AM Mr. Chisling.”

Erik nodded. The painters were to paint a copy of the New England Wolfpack Challenge Cup Banners in his office, alongside all retired players on the wall without any Chisling-era mementos. Chisling had them design it so there would be clearly room for three more banners before the design would need to be altered with every intention on filling that wall back up before his time was done with this team.
Erik walked back to the computer and checked his email. A few of them stood yet unread:

Code:
FROM: Esa
SUBJECT: Back-Up Goalies

FROM: Karlssens
SUBJECT: Spitfire

FROM: Victor Ball
SUBJECT: Co-GM.

Erik clicked the email from Victor Ball, whom he’s heard of a few times already during his time in New England. Reportedly Mr. Ball had inquired and applied for the New England GM opening and represents a player within the Wolfpack, young promising winger Kristaps Ball.

“Good morning Mr. Chisling,
I write today to respectfully request an interview to offer my services as a Co-General Manager to you and the New England Wolfpack. Please see the attached resume. I am available to begin work with you in Boston immediately if you’ll have me.
Kind regards,
Victor Ball”

He hadn’t really been in any rush to hire any help, but with the workload mounting and always having a counterpart to lean on during the busy season of GMing, this could be beneficial for both he, the Wolfpack, and Ball’s future GMing career.

Erik began checking references on Mr. Ball. Those references included Toivo Kosonen, now a member of the LA Panthers. Kosonen had nothing but fantastic things to say about Mr. Ball’s eligibility and qualifications for the job, and other internal resources lauded his work ethic and willingness to help the team. In many ways, Victor Ball reminded Erik of himself when he was looking to break into the industry after his playing career had come to a close. He picked up his cell phone and dialed the number.

“Victor, it’s Erik. When can you come in for an interview?”

“Thanks, I’ll see you tomorrow at 8.”

Erik ended the call and opened his laptop again. It was back to business as usual, just his desktop seemed to be green where it was blue just days ago. The Challenge Cup Finals were raging, and the official offseason was just days away. In New England, the work was just beginning.
