S44 SMJHL PT 3 - Key Line Pie
#16

Every player on the Raptors will tell you that the top line, which has been dubbed the Cold Pizza Line, is the reason for the team winning games. I am here to make an argument that the Raptor's second line of Konstantin Voloshin, Gvidas Kazlauskas, and Vladimir Vaskov is just as valuable. While the top line does the scoring, the second line wears down defenders and sets the Cold Pizza line up for success. The Raptor's second line is set up with high scoring players in each spot and puts extreme pressure on the defensive grouping, pushing them back on their heels. Allowing for the Pizza line to swap in and mop up the worn down defenders with massive scoring chances. While, I have to admit, that the Colorado Raptor's first line is the most important, I think the key line is the 2nd grouping. They haven't seen the offensive output but I feel like with good development and more chemistry the two slavs and their baltic friend will start potting more goals and causing a lot more havoc for the opposing teams.

The Montreal Militia's best line thus far in the S44 SMJHL season has been their 1st line. Consisting of Derek Bohne, Jeff Brogen, and Daniel Daniil, this trio had been providing most of the offense for the Militia. Derek Bohne is the team's number 1 centre, and he's been their best player so far with 11 goals and 8 assists. Jeff Brogen has been a consistent offensive producer as well with 18 points on the season. And while Daniil doesn't possess the same offensive prowess as his linemates, he provides some much needed grit, and his 54 hits leads the team and is third overall in the league. Daniil is the veteran on this line, as this is his final season of eligibility in the juniors. Bohne and Brogen are both younger players, as part of the S44 and S43 draft classes, respectively. Those two have really worked hard to develop their game over the past few seasons, and the results are evident on the ice.

I'm not sure if it's a good line or if it's a GOD line. When you look at the Vancouver Whalers top line of Martin, Thomason, and Kennedy, you see talent, pure and true. These three lads have transcended the game of hockey and entered into the pantheon of the hockey chemistry gods. They've had success on and off the ice due to their chemistry. You can see a prime example in the Top 5 point-getters in the SMJHL. Kennedy (23), Thomason (23), and Martin(21) are 3rd, 4th, and 5th, respectively in points.

Their off ice chemistry is pretty clear when you see them all holding hands (that's right, three-way handholding) after games, before games, and sometimes even during games. The trio will continue to produce (and reproduce) on and off the ice until they're inevitably split up and delivered to their SHL teams. Or maybe a lesser god (compared to the MTK line's godliness) will smile upon them and grant them more seasons in the SMJHL.

So far on the St. Louis Scarecrows the most dominant forward line has had to be the combination of Steven Moyer, Nicholas Williams, and Nicky Pederson Jr. As for prospects in the SMJHL go these three are some of the absolute best playing right now. Steven Moyer's pinpoint accurate passing along with his strength on the puck makes him a perfect mold at center for Nicky Pederson Jr. and Nicholas Williams to play with. Both wingers play a similar two-way game where they can provide support defensively when needed. The Scarecrows however would not currently be 13-4-5 without the great offensive numbers these three have been putting up. Nicholas Williams leads the line with 8 goals and 21 points in 22 games. Nicky Pederson has had 10 goals and 17 points in 22 games, and Steven Moyer has tied him for points with 5 goals and 17 points as well. If this line heats up in the playoffs there is no telling what's in store for the Scarecrows.

The Detriot Falcons have been extremely succesful so far this season. They currently sit at the top of the standings with a 14-5-3 record, good for 31 points. Most of the lines and pairings are doing very well. The one line that stands out to me would have to be the Ero Makinen, HIppo Passamus and Ola Wagstrom line. Passamus and Wagstrom are two dynamic wingers with scoring ability. The big center Makinen compliments their play nicely. Both Wagstrom and Passamus are in the top 10 scoring league wide. With Wagstrom sitting second with 23 points. I think Makinen is a huge reason why Makinen and Passamus are putting up big point totals. Makinen is very strong on the defensive side of the game. His strong play on the back end gives his wingers plenty of opporunity to go to work. It also allows Makien and Passamus to focus more on offense knowing they have Makinen covering for them.

After a horrible 0-6-1 start, the Montreal Militia has gone 8-3-1 since. That thanks to the Derek Bohne, Jeff Brogen, Daniel Daniil Line. A combined 44 Points, which Bohne has 18 himself.Bohne also leads the team in Goals with 10. Bohne and Brogen  are shooting above 15% with Brogen at 16.28 and Bohne at 20.

Along with them is the return of Petr Vrana in goal. After his call up to start the season, he was sent down after 6 games. His return has been a God send to the Militia as they have picked up points in all but 3 games. Viana is 8-4-1 with a 0.891 SV% and a 2.56 G.A.A

The combination of these two has helped put the Militia back into the playoff picture and establishing themselves as a solid team.

Sorry for doubling down; there's only so many good lines per team:

Currently sitting two points back from a playoff position, and holding a 9-12-1 record, the Anchorage Armada aren't a team to rile envy from other league members. However, a glimmer of hope comes from their first D-line pair of Vegeta Muerto and Leopold Lockhart. While they won't knock your socks off just yet, these two youngsters have found a way to consistently pitch in offensively, with a combined 24 points (4G-20A) all while being fairly responsible on the back check (-7 combined) and have laid out a whopping 48 hits. The coaches/general managers have nicely paired the two, allowing offensive-D Lockhart try to find the net, all the while Muerto plays his more natural roll of a two-way defensemen. This helps the first O-line of Xena, Bust and Niemi, apply even more pressure in the attacking zone. This by itself would be good enough, however a very key point to this story is that they're both rookies. With just one year of smjhl hockey behind them, these two may become one of the best tandems the league has ever seen.

Colorado's best line is the famous Pepperoni Winter Winters line which was already quite known last season for their great chemistry and they still are going strong in this season with 20,17,16 points them and responsible for the highest +/- on the Raptors team. Now as to why they are so good it's the basic chemistry of having a shooting focused center and right winger in Pepperoni and Winter being fed nice passes by their right winger Alex Winters. They are also on a high octane strategy employed by our coach. They have all the offensive freedom in the world to get the puck into the net. They are also being complimented by the best Defender pair on the Raptors which is Maddox together with Zoidberg Jr. These 5 players are a huge reason why the Raptors will finish as a playoff team even though the Raptors currently aren't in that position yet.

While they are not first pairing of the Anchorage Armada team, second line of Dean Colt III, Mika Mayfield and Doug Dimmadome is the more effective line in terms of scoring. Dean and Doug are leading the team with 18 and 16 points, respectively, and Mayfield is close enough with 14. Dean is also second in the league in points accumulated by a center. How so? Looking at the statistics, you can see that they are playing less time than the first line, so they have less chances, but seems like trio I'm talking about here is more offensively minded. They are just 7th, 10th and 11th in terms of ice time in the team, but coach's task for them to be more aggressive in the offense definitely pays off. Good chemistry between them and their defensive partners, Karl Von Wittelsbach and Stolp Skottson, makes them to cause skill mismatches against opponents' slightly weaker second units. Hopefully Armada can take positives from their play and build from that to get out of the slump and get in a playoff spot.
