S44 PT #3 - Where are they now?
(This post was last modified: 11-19-2018, 04:13 AM by sarmo.)

Derrick Glover played his whole career with the Chiefs and Nova until he could not play anymore. He was always a solid role player season after season but his obsession with donuts started catching up to him. Before every game Nova tried to help him quit his habit of eating donuts but the donutdefender aka Glover's love for donuts was too much and as a result he played his last season a tad overweight and eventually left the SHL. His stats remind consistent towards the later half of his career however but he regressed physically so naturally he left to open his own donut shop in Minnesota called PowerPlay donuts. Giving up full time hockey to come up with different variety and flavors of donuts to sell and his plans to open up another hockey rink in minny for the youth is exactly what made Glover the peoples champion. He kept his roots strong and treated his SHL teammates like his own... never leaving them hanging and finishing his career off with the team that drafted him instead of chasing rings or fame.

Pavel Pivonka had all the poise and promise to be a SMHJL and SHL star. However, his off the ice antics got him into a lot of trouble. Known for his fighting spirit on the ice, using his fists to rally his team to victory, Pavel never knew how to turn it off. He decided to go on the celebrity boxing circuit and test his pugilistic skills against some of the very best. A bout was scheduled with Stephen Hawking before he died. Hawking’s replacement was Stan Lee and we saw how that turned out. Pavel thought people would rather die than face him in the ring. That’s when he came up against Michael Flatley or Riverdance fame. Flatley, known more for his feet than fists, knocked out Pivonka in the first round ending his boxing career. Pivonka still plays for the Militia, but he has lost the ability to speak. He may never regain it.

I had an old friend from juniors named Sinn Nolan. He was a good kid, played the game the right way. Nolan never really excelled in the offensive side of the game. He was a strong, heady two way player who was more likely to strip the opposing team on the rush with a strong backcheck than to score a goal. The only real excellence he had offensively was his puck distribution. Bitties growing up always was a shooter. He would often coast and set out to pick the cherries at the opposing blue lines. Seeing the hard work and effort that Nolan put in day after day actually helped Bitties improve his work ethic. Nolan never made a career out of his hockey. Eventually his lack of talent caught up to him to where the level of effort couldn’t make up the difference, even as a 4th liner. Today Nolan has hung them up and is coaching youth and works in sales for an enterprise software company. Funny how life works.

RIP Dangel. See you on the other side, brother

The SHL has had thousands of players flow through its ranks during its 45 seasons of existence, but few with a more result or story than Luke Thomason @"luketd".

After being drafted 3rd Overall in the S43 SHL Entry’s Draft and two more years of polishing in the SMJHL, Thomason arrived in the SHL like a storm. Thomason put up a Rookie of the Year caliber season and despite losing the award by one point to countryman Alex Winters, it appeared that  he was was on his way to stardom. Then he vanished.

After extensive research and reaching out to his teammates at different levels, we found Mr. Thomason holed up in a small shack in Nunuvat, ice fishing and skating on the frozen lakes and often the ocean as well. Mr. Thomason declines to speak with us for this article, but reports say that he grew tired of the game, of the infighting he had seen far too often. While we can’t confirm that Mr. Thomason received the offer, we can confirm that Mr. Thomason’s beloved Vancouver Whalers offered him a job, hoping to bring some of his some of his brilliance to the organization where he once graced the ice.

Hunter Jones was the 8th overall pick in the season 38 SHL entry draft. Drafted 8th overall by the Calgary Dragons, one pick after Gabriel Wong, Hunter Jones has had himself a career in Calgary. Already apart of two Challenge Cup championship runs with the Calgary Dragons, tied with Gabriel Wong with 2 Challenge Cups as well. Hunter Jones is still going strong in his career and shows no signs of slowing down. In his rookie season with Calgary, Jones had 7 points in 50 games. While definitely not any signs of having a good future, he was not given much opportunity to shine. However, he did get 3 goals in the playoffs that season, helping Calgary capture the Challenge Cup. The following season, Jones had a breakout year, with 26 points and keeping that pace with 28 points in the following season. The thing is, Hunter Jones shined in the playoffs that season, finishing with 16 points in 16 playoff games, helping the Dragons capture their 2nd Challenge Cup in 3 seasons. In season 43, Jones continued his improving pace with 34 points. Jones has been slowly improving his game every season and shows no signs of slowing down. With two Challenge Cups to his name, he’s hoping to add more and one day be a hall of famer for the Calgary Dragons and the SHL.

So the league hired me to do a bit of research on a draft mate or former teammate and their transition out of hockey, so I did a lot of searching of the many players who I was drafted into the league with and I went with my good friend and former teammate Tommy Tuck (@Muford). After a long and mediocre hockey career between the pipes, Tuck found his true calling in sports ownership, but in an unusual sport for an European. After moving to North America for his career, Tuck fell in love with the sport of football. After chasing millions of dollars and smart investments, Tuck was able to afford to buy an Arena Football League team. Obviously not as big or as impressive as like and NSFL team, but Tuck isn't as well known as other SHL retirees so his name didn't carry as much clout as others.

S18 was a long time ago, all but 1 player from that class (myself) are either dead or retired. One player was a favorite of mine and I've kept in contact with him over the years. He was my friendly rival, Vidrik Onoprienko! After an illustrious career with the Winnipeg Jets that saw him win 2 cups, Onoprienko hung up his skates in S37 after posting an impressive 661 SHL points. He was always a man of the people during his time in the league and a lover of micro brews. Naturally Onoprienko opened a brewery in his retirement, but not in snowy Winnipeg, he decided to move back to his native Estonia and open a brewery in his home town of Tallin. He's quite a star in Estonia so the brewery is very popular among locals and especially tourists. The brewery has a large bar with over 50 micro brews and a restaurant that serves good food and appetizers. Onoprienko rubs elbows with his patrons and you can tell he really enjoys talking with everyone. He still plays hockey for fun in a recreational beer league and enjoy spending time with his wife and 3 children. Supposedly one of his sons is a hockey player so it's possible with some luck we could see another Onoprienko in the SHL one day. All in all it's been a nice retirement for Vidrik Onoprienko.

As I trek further into the wilds of Northern Finland, I see the first sign of human activity for miles - a sign that simply says (translated) "Keep out, trespassers will be thunderdomed." For the first time in my post-retirement trek to locate Dank Boija, I finally know that I am on the right track. After a career marked by a renowned chippy style, several points, and a number of suspensions for off-ice behaviour, the player we affectionately called "Snussu" had sworn off society and retreated into the wilderness to live out the rest of his days. We hadn't heard from him in years, but with our own careers to worry about, we had never had time to track him down. After my career ended in disappointment, as expected, I resolved to finally do right by a teammate and find Boija, if only just to make sure he was ok.

After days of hiking through the alpine wilderness, I finally arrived at a cottage that was covered wall to wall in security cameras. Before I could even knock on the door, I was greeted with a shotgun being pointed at me and my old friend screaming unintelligibly in Finnish. I tried to reason with him, and let him know just how many of us cared about his well-being, but I was promptly escorted off the property. As I returned home, my only hope was that seeing me would be enough to motivate him to come back to society. That was when I logged onto the SHL boards and saw a fresh thunderdome post, simply titled "Murphy." It was then that I knew that our little Finnish friend was lost to us forever.
