PGS S44 Game 22: DET vs. VAN
#1

Whalers bounce back, dominate first-place Falcons, 4-2
Game Link

Game Summary
The defending Four Star Cup Champion Vancouver Whalers dominated every phase of the game on their way to a 4-2 victory over the previously undefeated Detroit Falcons last night.

After a sleepy first period saw them take a 1-0 lead on a slippery backhander from rookie Andy Kerr, Vancouver turned the tide in the second. Noah Nowes put the Whalers up 2-0 early in the second after redirecting a rebound from veteran goalie Cedric Robinson. After a fight between Vancouver forward Shaquille Desiraka and Detroit center Eero Makinen at 3:42, Detroit lost their composure. Veteran Chuck Crutchfield took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at 5:39, leading to Vancouver’s first powerplay opportunity of the night. They made the most of it, as defenseman Barret McCarthy let loose slapshot to beat Robinson high glove side for his first of the year. That goal would end up being the game winner.

Down 3-0 going into the third period, the veteran Falcons did not give up. Tomas Viklund came into the third looking to turn the tide with a strong physical game; unfortunately, his aggressive play led to a double minor for slashing that drew blood on Vancouver rookie William Goose. He left with the training staff to have three stitches put in across his left cheek, but returned later in the period and had a key block to keep offensive zone possession on the powerplay for the Whalers.

Viklund took another penalty for tripping at 15:31, and the Whalers potted their second of the night with the man advantage. After setting up two goals in the second, Max Mauldin made a heady deflection to beat Robinson high for his third point of the night. Maudin now has eight points in seven games for Vancouver. Despite making some questionable plays earlier in the period, Viklund got some redemption just 76 seconds later, when he broke Leitner’s shutout with a one timer at the half boards. Rookie defender Bedrich Sykora intercepted a pass from Jack Kennedy in the neutral zone and slid it over to center Marc Palicka, who carried it into the zone and found Viklund open for the score.

Rookie Donnie Dicks potted a garbage goal with 18 seconds left in the third with an impressive deke move that caught Johannes Leitner out of position, beating him through the five hole. It was too little, too late to change the tide of the game.

Vancouver improves to 4-2-1 on the season, while Detroit holds onto first place, but now sits at 6-1-0. The Whalers have outshot the Falcons 72-45, but have let up 7 goals in two games. The teams meet again on Day 11 for what we expect will be an explosive battle between the two rivals.

Some quick little facts between these two teams:

Vancouver and Detroit played each other a total of 7 times in the last regular season, with Vancouver taking the spoils in 4 of them.
In the last meetup of that season (Game 193), Vancouver forward Max Mauldin also notched 2 assists, which might make Detroit want to examine his play a little closer to see what they are doing wrong.
Luke Thomason and Noah Nowes also got a point in each of these two games for the Whalers, whilst Tig Murphy managed the same feat for the Falcons.
Detroit's Goalie Cedric Robinson will also be disappointed in himself not being able to put up a repeat performance, given he stopped all of Vancouver's shots in the previous meeting.

ESPN player of the game is Max Mauldin.

Mauldin has a great nice for the Vancouver Whalers. After taking a bad penalty to start the first period. Mauldin came roaring back and set up a goal to start the second period then set up another goal right after that on the Power Play. Then once the third period started he scored to put the game away. Mauldin only had 1 shot the 1 that resulted in a goal but he also had two hits. Overall a very strong performance by the SMJHL star. Definitely the best player on either team tonight.

Tomen's goalie of the game:

Johannes Leitner: Why? Because he literally outplayed the Detroit Falcons goalie Cedric Robinson in every metric in this game which allowed the Vancouver Whalers to win with 4 to 2 over the Detroit Falcons. Leitner posted a better save percentage while facing less shots than Robinson with 89.47% to 86.21%. Leitner was also able to post a better Good Save percentage with 70.59% to 60% only allowing half the rebounds of Ronbinson's. Only 60% Leitner's rebounds resulted in bad rebounds with possession for the Detroit Falcons while Robinson allowed 90% of his rebounds to end up in Vancouver Whalers possession.
