PGS S44 Game 2: Halifax vs Detroit
#1
(This post was last modified: 11-13-2018, 10:37 PM by Weretarantula.)

This is your post game breakdown for Game 2:
raiders Halifax Raiders at Detroit Falcons  Falcons

First of all let's get to the crucial stats for anyone that didn't get to see all the (albeit, predominantly one sided) action. Your final score this evening is 6-2 for the home team, and unfortunately for any of the Nova Scotian's tuning in to tonight's broadcast the statistics aren't going to be much kinder from here on in.

Before we get to the period by period breakdown let's present our 3 Star's for this evening:
At 3rd star, with 2 assists we have from the Falcons, Bedrich Sykora! @AnthonyOuellet
[Image: Sykora.png]

At 2nd star, with a goal and an assist we have from the Falcons, Marc Palicka! @BaseScoutX1[Image: ev8zDus.png]

And at 1st star, with a goal and an assist we have from the Falcons, Pingy Pingu! @Pingy Pingu
[Image: AmoQELw.png]

First Period
Well the visitors started off strong, capitalising on Xavier Cross's roughing penalty 6:58 in and Crush Cile converting on the power play off a one timer. The Raider's could only hold onto the lead for just over a minute however, with Poopity Scoop equalising off a rebound block from Pierre Laroche-Durocher. Call it unfortunate, but Pierre was on the ice for 5 of Detroit's goals this evening. Might be coincidental, but he might need to put in a few extra hours at the gym over the next coming weeks given his performance.
The next 8 minutes don't get much better for the defence, with Detroit potting in another 3 goals thanks to Eero Makinen, Dank Boija and Marc Palicka. Goaltender Nathan Cosco earned himself the rest of the night off after this, and was relieved by backup ZzSnoop Lion to try and quell the onslaught that the Raider's were receiving. The one saving grace is that Halifax managed to successfully complete a penalty kill halfway through the period, but the stats are cruel otherwise. Final shots for the period were 10 to 14.

Second Period
This period was much better for the visitors and the coach must have given them a solid talking to in the intermission after the farce of the first. Maximilian Egger capitalised off a rebound to cut the lead to 2, and there wasn't much else to write home about in this one. Both teams served a penalty in the period and both killed them respectively. Shame Halifax couldn't find a further leg up in the period, and it made for a good time for the fans to go and relieve themselves and refill their drinks. Final shots for the period were 11 to 5.

Third Period
After capitalising in the second period to bring themselves back into the game slightly, Halifax completely dropped the ball in the third. Conceding another 2 goals and having almost no offence to show, it was almost like they had checked out and were looking onward  to their next game. Pingy got his goal that earned him his first star for the night and Xavier made up for his first period indiscretions with one for himself too. Decent game for the home fans to watch, but a shame for ay of the travellers. Final shots for the period were 3 to 9.

Tonight's Final Thoughts
With final shots at 24 to 28, it seems like Halifax just couldn't get over the hurdle that Detroit's defence posed. Had they been able to breakthrough and force a third in the second period, maybe there would have been more to write about, but as it is Detroit came away with the win and deservedly so. The coach will be happy with his teams performance, but maybe will consider that luck was on his side for a majority of the night.

Thanks for tuning in and we will see you next time for another breakdown!

"Bring back Pingy Pingu Lunga Gumba esq. And I mean bring him all the way back. I want every thread on this forum that involves even a modicum of salt to get razed to the ground by our most notorious shitposting penguin. I want every thunderdome to drown in ABAGABA spam and a signature that doesn't end. I want the userbase of this fine league to cower in terror, slinking about the forums and making as little noise as possible for fear of attracting the Shitpost Slenderman. When some poor immigrant from the NFL sim blunders into the forum and makes an angry post about how his player slipped to the early second round despite having done ALL the rookie tasks(!), let the veteran survivalists stare in horror and pity while the newbie rages. They will know it is only a matter of time before @Pingy Pingu descends upon his post like a ravening wolf and obliterates his tread, reducing it to a radioactive waste-dump of unintelligible spam. They will not interfere, for Pingy is our immune system. Because he can take it. Our Dark Knight of Shitposting"

Comment 2: Top Line Showdown

A team's top line is usually the cream of the crop--the leaders, both on and off of the ice. If the top line is playing responsibly, it stands to reason that the rest of the team will follow their example. For the Raiders, that top line is Kristof Kovacs, Oliver Kovacs, and Vince Rieper. For the Falcons, it's Dank Boija, David Fantobens, and Franz Cooper. In game 2, Detroit's top line performed better than Halifax's top line and the final score of the game reflected that. Detroit's Boija, Fantobens, and Cooper combined for 3 points, one goal and two assists. They had a combined total of 11 shots on goal, played a combined total of 5:40 in special teams minutes and had two hits between them. Meanwhile, Halifax's Kovacs brothers and Rieper had 1 point between them, an assist. They had a combined total of 9 shots on goal and played 4:58 of special teams time with 0 hits between them.

Comment 3: What Went Well for the Raiders

Despite their less than stellar showing, this game wasn't all bad for the Raiders. The bright spot was their their special teams. Their penalty kill performed at 100%, allowing zero goals on either of the two Detroit power plays. Considering Detroit's offense wasn't having any trouble scoring 5 on 5, those two penalties could have meant two more for the other side, but the Raiders managed to perform well when a man down. Their power play also managed to make a little magic happen--albeit only a teeny tiny bit of magic. One of their two goals happened on the Power Play, making their time on ice with the man advantage a success 33% of the time.

Our ESPN player of the game is Pingy Pingu !

Pingy was able to do it all for the Falcons this game. Pingy had a goal and an assist for a total of two points. Pingu was a plus 2 so wasn't on the ice for a goal against. Pingy blocked two shots, made two solid hits and took two shots on net. Pingy has been a big reason why Detroit has had so much success. Pingy has been able to show up big for the Falcons every game this season and will be a big part of there playoff run.

All the Time in the World

What does a player do with all the time in the world? Well, we're going to find out with an in depth look at the player on each team who got the most time on ice.

raiders Maximilian Egger - 21:19 MP raiders

A look at Egger's play by play seems to answer our question with a resounding "Not much".  He records 1 goal on 2 shots in the second period, and then a lame HIT and HTT, neither of which change the possession of the puck.  So why does Egger deserve to get 21 minutes of ice time? Turns out the answer lies in a stat not captured on any regular stat sheet.  Egger intercepted 15 passes and took the offensive zone 12 times, giving his team the offensive chances that they would have needed to come back from their tremendous first period deficit.

Maximilian Egger's night:
Code:
{"1st period"=>[],
"2nd period"=>
 ["0:14 of 2nd period - Shot by Maximilian Egger. ",
  "13:49 of 2nd period - Shot by Maximilian Egger. ",
  "Goal by Maximilian Egger - Halifax Raiders : 2 - Detroit Falcons : 4"],
"3rd period"=>
 ["7:24 of 3rd period - Maximilian Egger is hit by Poopity Scoop. ",
  "14:43 of 3rd period - Dank Boija is hit by Maximilian Egger. "]}

Falcons David Fantobens  Falcons

A look at Fantobens' play by play seems to answer our question with "Make life stressful for ZzSnoop Lion and Nathan Cosco".  Plain and simple, Fantobens spends his time on the ice putting shots on the net.  Even though none of his shots made it home in the netting, his last shot in the first period did earn him an assist.  Of his 8 attempts, 5 of them were quality shots, putting him at the top of his team this game with 1/5th of their total shots.

David Fantobens' night:
Code:
{"1st period"=>
 ["1:38 of 1st period - Shot by David Fantobens. ",
  "1:42 of 1st period - Shot by David Fantobens. ",
  "3:25 of 1st period - Minor Penalty to David Fantobens for Holding. ",
  "8:13 of 1st period - Shot by David Fantobens. ",
  "8:17 of 1st period - Shot by David Fantobens. ",
  "10:19 of 1st period - Mikael Choybuk wins face-off versus David Fantobens in neutral zone. ",
  "10:59 of 1st period - Shot by David Fantobens. ",
  "14:24 of 1st period - Shot by David Fantobens. "],
"2nd period"=>
 ["3:45 of 2nd period - Kristof Kovacs wins face-off versus David Fantobens in neutral zone. ",
  "15:11 of 2nd period - Shot by David Fantobens. "],

  "8:09 of 3rd period - David Fantobens is hit by Rainbow Dash and loses puck. ",

Comment One:
Three Stars of the Game

1 - Pingy Pingu (DET)
With the fourth least in minutes played this game, Pingu contributed to an assist on the Detroit Falcons' fourth goal of the game in the first period followed by a goal of his own in the third. He tied with three others for 2 points in the game, but was the only one to block two shots that could have ended up as goals for the Raiders. Job well done!

2 - Marc Palicka (DET)
Palicka also came out of the game with two points - a goal (in the first period, assisted by Pingu) and an assist on Pingu's goal in the third. He had the third least in minutes this game and his one shot ended up in a goal.

3 - Bedrich Sykora (DET)
His two assists (one each in the first and third periods) helped lead him to a +/- of 3 and keep the Falcons ahead.

Comment Two:
Halibad Moment
The Raiders showed they weren't ready to face the Falcons early on in this game. Just after their first goal by Crush Cile at 7:48 in the first period, their confidence was up too high and Dank Boija won the face-off in the neutral zone to bring the puck onto the Raiders' side. A shot by David Fantobens was blocked by Nathan Cosco, along with a shot barely two seconds later by Franz Cooper. The Raiders were for some reason nowhere to be found two seconds later when Fantobens went for another shot that missed the net. Forty-one seconds went by, givin the Raiders enough time to respond, until a shot by Ola Wagstrom went toward the net, but was blocked by Mr. Faceoffs followed by a shot two seconds later by Eero Makinen that was blocked by Pierre Laroche-Durocher. It seemed like the Raiders were about to keep the puck out of the net again, but Poopity Scoop slid one past Cosco. This goal would have been exciting for Falcon fans to watch but definitely frustrating for the Raiders defense. We won't even mention the three other goals that came against the Raiders this period. Oh, wait, we just mentioned it.

Comment Three:
Unsung Hero
I would say the unsung hero of this game was Cedric Robinson from the Detroit Falcons. He made 22 saves off of 24 shots and played the whole 60 minutes. Of his saves, 16 of them were made without a rebound, so even though the Falcons' offense were alive tonight, there could have been changes for the Raiders to even up the score if not for Robinson's rebound control. There is also to be something said about a goalie feeling overconfident after his team is up by 4 in the second, but Robinson stuck his ground and was there ready to make ten saves besides the one goal that went in. Overall, not a bad night for him.

Tomen's goalie of the game:

Cedric Robinson: Why? Well let's get down to buisness. Robinson lead all 3 goalies ( Cosco was pulled and Lion entered the game for him) in SV% with 91.67 compared to Cosco:71.43% and Lions's 85.71%.
Robinson lost to Lion in terms of Rebound% but one can attribute that to Lion just facing half of Robinson's shots. Robinson also lost out to Cosco in terms of bad rebound %. It's interesting to see that Robinson allowed one goal after a bad rebound while Cosco allowed 2 goals after a bad rebound. So you can see that statistics don't always paint the full picture.

3 Stars of the Game

1st star: Pingy Pingu
Piny Pingu had a fantastic game tonight against the Halifax Raiders. Registering a goal and an assist on two shots in only 12 minutes played? That’s insane and it shows a lot of heart for the Detroit Falcons. A true professional performance. He also registered two hits and two shots blocked.

2nd star: Marc Palicka
Marc Palicka had a similarly awesome night as his teammate Pingu. A goal and an assist is nothing to scoff at in any league. On top of that Marc had a +2 rating and won a decent amount of his draws. All in under 12 minutes played. Not bad at all! Any team will take that kind of performance.

3rd Star: Bedrich Sykora
Bedrich Sykora is a beast and he showed up tonight with two solid and important assists. Carrying out a +3 rating with him on the night, he played in just over 13 minutes. Again a solid performance for the minutes played and nothing to scoff at. That’s why he’s third star of the game.
