Militia Montreal Militia vs. Kelowna Knights Knights
Goals
3-4
Shots
25-24
Three Stars
1 - Scott Niedermayer Jr. (KEL)
2 - Vladislav Konstantin (KEL)
3 - Boris Denisovich (KEL)

The Montreal Militia and Kelowna Knights are both teams that are fairly weak heading into this SMJHL season, but it was bound to be a strong match up nonetheless. The game was slow to start apart from a high sticking penalty to Jeffery Murphy until rookie center Nickolas Klaus scored a goal off a pass from class mate Nolan Sawchuk with a secondary assist from Antonio Calculon near the end of the first.

Code:
1. Kelowna Knights , Nickolas Klaus 1 (Nolan Sawchuk 1, Antonio Calculon 1) at 17:21

The game continued in the second period with the same slow pace as Jeffery Murphy took an additional four minutes in the penalty box within the first five minutes of the period. Montreal's Daniel Daniil ate a slashing penalty before the Militia found the back of the net through Griffith Cadwalader to round out the second period.

Code:
2. Montreal Militia , Griffith Cadwalader 1 (Charlie Schieck 1, Willie Fisterbottom 1) at 18:13
The third period is where the game real picked up as the Scott Neidermayer Jr. opened the period only twenty second in with a goal. The momentum would stick until seven minutes later when Daniil tied the game up again for the Militia, until four minutes further when Konstantin made it 3-2 Knights. Kelowna didn't have time to rest on their laurels though as with three minutes remaining in the third the Militia tied the game and took it to overtime.

Code:
3. Kelowna Knights , Scott Niedermayer Jr. 1 (Vladislav Konstantin 1, Sanyi Kocsis 1) at 0:20
4. Montreal Militia , Daniel Daniil 1 (Phil Mcrakin 1, Derek Bohne 1) at 8:06 (PP)
5. Kelowna Knights , Vladislav Konstantin 1 (Boris Denisovich 1, Oliver Dahl 1) at 12:25 (PP)
6. Montreal Militia , Derek Bohne 1 (Andreas Kvalheim 1, Dinars Briedis 1) at 16:39
Overtime was where it truly got heated. Marco Raanteli took a penalty in the first minute of the period and put his team down to a five on four, and almost immeaditely must have regretted it as the Knights scored only fourteen seconds later on the power play to take home the win.

7. Kelowna Knights , Scott Niedermayer Jr. 2 (Boris Denisovich 2, Rasmus Rasmus 1) at 1:28 (PP

3 Stars of the Game

1st star: Scott Niedermayer Jr.
It's not easy to score two goals in the SMJHL but that's what Scott Niedermayer Jr. did in this game against the Montreal Militia. A scoring defenseman from New Jersey, you can expect similar nights from this defenseman on the Knights going forward. He produced three shots, two hits, and three shots blocked in this outing easily earning the first star.

2nd star: Vladislav Konstantin
Konstantin is a sniper and knows how to put the puck on net and create scoring chances for his teammates. He did that in this game and produced a goal and an assist. He also contributed with 7 shots total as he was all over the ice all night being an issue for his opponents. Solid 2nd star performance from a skilled player.

3rd Star: Boris Denisovich
As a two way forward you're supposed to provide your team strong defense while also ideally putting up points as well. That's exactly what Boris Denisovich did in this game as he had two assists for his team and two shots along with three good hits. Earned that third star in underrated fashion.

Game of Checks

Let's look at the two heavy hitters in this game.  I'm talking about Militia Right Winger Andreas Kvalheim and Knights Left Winger Jeffrey Murphy; they both had 5 hits on the night, but let's take a deeper look.

On quick inspection, we can see that they both had similar minutes (Kvalheim: 15:28, Murphy: 15:45) but clearly Kvalheim did more with his time.  While Murphy was 1 more minor away from spending half his night in the sin bin, Kvalheim used his time to notch an assist and 3 quality shots on goal.  Kvalheim also went 3 for 3 in the face-off circles (2 against Shouta Aizawa who went 10/29 on the night for face-offs).

As to the effectiveness of their hits, Kvalheim managed to take the puck away on 4 of his 5 hits while also giving it away on his 1 HTT.  Murphy proved less effective going 2 for 5 on takeaways, but also not having any HTT.

While it does look like Kvalheim had the better night in this spotlight, it's important to note that he went -1 on the night and the Militia ultimately lost the game in overtime.

Player of the Game:
Tonight's player of the game goes to none other than Kelowna Knights defender Scott Niedermayer Jr. The man patrolling the blueline had a great game. He logged over 24 minutes of time on ice, as well as completing two hits and blocking three shots. This was a strong defensive performance, however what really helped him stand out though was his offensive performance. He was firing the puck on net every chance he got, posting three shots on net and potted two goals on those shots. one of which was the overtime winner. His strong game helped his team come out of the game with two points.

Goalie of the Night:
This award goes to the man between the pipes for Kelowna, Scott Foster. Both goalies played unreal tonight, however Foster edged out Montreal tendy Scott Wyndham with his strong performance during overtime. He made a couple spectacular saves that could be in contention for save of the year, and it's only one of the first games of the year. Foster saved 22 of the 25 shots he faced, good enough for a 0.880 save percentage. This was his first win on the season, and he looks to have many more. He certainly showed why Kelowna management trusts him to be the starter, and proved that he can be an established SMJHL starter should he continue to perform like this.

Kelowna Rookie Watch
Kelowna's rookies had a solid game tonight. Sanyi Kocsis clocked almost 24 minutes of time on ice while posting an assist, taking a penalty, and making a solid open ice hit. While not the flashiest game he held the opposing Montreal forwards off the board. Nickolas Klaus had the opening goal of the game tonight. He played almost 21 minutes, took 3 shots on net, and had a number of minutes on both the power play but also the penalty kill. He'll be sure to follow this performance up with plenty more goals I'm sure. The last rookie we're looking at is winger Nolan Sawchuk. Sawchuk got the primary assist on fellow rookie Klaus' goal, and logged just under 20 minutes of time on ice. He had plenty of power play time and got a single shot during the game. Not a spectacular game but he'll be sure to improve on this game as the season goes on.

Tomen's goalie of the game:

ZzScott Foster: Why? Foster the Kelowna Knights goalie just outperformed Scott Wyndham the Montreal Militia goalie in every static that I tracked. His SV% was better with 88% compared to 83.33% of Wyndham. The Good Save% of 77.27% outperformed Wyndham's of 70% in this game and the bad Rebound % of 80% from Foster was just outperforming the Montreal goalie who posted one of 100%. Everyone would definitely agree with me here that Foster deserves the goalie of the game award due to his just simply better performance. Foster is the reason why the Knights actually won this game.
