PGS S44 Game 1 VAN vs ANC
#1

Vancouver Whalers vs Anchorage Armada
Game 1
Whalers 2 – 4 Armada
Period 1

The puck drops on the seasons first game against the Vancouver Whalers and the Anchorage Armada. Tensions are high as both teams are desperate to prove they have what it takes, the Whalers looking good and feeling confident while the Armada is filled with eager rookies. Maybe a little too eager with rookie Vegeta Muerto (ANC) taking a high-sticking minor at 0:56
Bill Barber ices the puck only three minutes into the game, this leads to a new faceoff. Armada wins the faceoff and two shots later Barber finds himself at the point with the puck, a killer snipe and he scores! Goal by Bill Barber (ANC), 1st of the season with assists by Elias Armia Jr. and Takehiko Yukimura.
The rest of the period is slow with one minor penalty per side. With only 37 seconds left in the period Mayfield (ANC) sees a lose puck and takes her shot. With a quick wrap around she gets her first goal of her carrer! With assists by Doug Dimmadome and Karl Von Wittelsbach.

Score at the end of the first Whalers 0 – 2 Armada
Shots at the end of the first Whalers 9 – 12 Armada
Period 2

With the Armada gaining momentum Bust (ANC)manages to score his first of the season assists by Eero Niemi and Vegeta Muerto . The Whalers manage to kill another powerplay from a delaying the game minor served by Adidon Zuckerberg (VAN) and get some motivation. Leopold Lockhart (ANC) halfway through the period takes a minor for Hooking. Having a top defence on the pk out leads to chances. The Whalers get the puck off of the face off, strait to the blue line and a snipe top shelf where momma hides the cookies! Goal by Jack Kennedy (VAN), his first of season 44 assist by Carlo Russo.
This seems to anger the Armada because 30 seconds later they score. Goal by Doug Dimmadome (ANC) assists by Dean Colt III and Stolp Skottson

Score at the end of the second Whalers 1 – 4 Armada
Shots at the end of the second Whalers 16 – 27 Armada
Period 3

Emotions are running high as Ancorage takes a pentalty for boarding and a pentaly for Holding and Vancover takes a penalty for Hooking with only 36 seconds left in the game. The whalers take advantage of the inexperienced Armada and manage to score at 11:37 with the goal by Trav Lizard (VAN) his first of the season with an assist from Andy Kerr.
Score at the end of the third Whalers 2 – 4 Armada
Shots at the end of the third Whalers 26 – 34 Armada

The ESPN star of the game is Mika Mayfield!

Despite Doug Dimmadome having two points, we're giving to to Mika!. Mika Mayfield scored a highlight reel goal to give the Armada the early 2 goal lead, a huge momentum boost. Mike was peppering shots all night with 4 shots in the game along with making her physical presence known with 2 big hits. Mika also plays all kinds of situations playing penalty kill, power play and even strength ice. A great start to the season for the rookie winger and we are sure there will be many more games like this where that came from.

Harry Hemmert's Keys to the Game

The defending champ Vancouver Whalers were completely outplayed to start the year, in large part to the second line of the youthful Armada. S43 top scorer Doug Dimmadome, rookie winger Mika Mayfield, and center Dean Colt III combined for two goals and two assists to lead the team. While the top line of Xena, Bust, and Eero Niemi produced more shots on goal (9 versus 8), the Dimmadome line showed more impact on the scoreboard. Both lines will be key to continued success for an Anchorage team trying to climb out of the league basement. Dimmadome’s goal was especially impressive. Defender Stolp Skottson made a simple drop pass, leaving Dougie Fresh open for a wicked snapper in the slot to beat Johannes Leitner low blocker side and put Anchorage up 4-1 late in the 2nd period. While the Whalers outshot Anchorage 14-8 in the last 24 minutes of game time, Dimmadome’s goal was the final dagger that finished any comeback chance for the defending champs.

For me the key to the game is as easy as rebound control. I don't think Vancouver played awful, I just think they got a couple of unlucky bounces and weren't able to capitalize on getting quality chances after a rebound. And you have to give the Armada D, as well as Larry Atta, credit for controlling where the loose pucks went. Atta at least twice in the first period alone gave up a rebound but directed it expertly into the corner. And he did this time and time again in this game. So was there rebounds that Vancouver gobbled up? Sure, but were any of them high quality chances? Not at all. And it wasn't just Larry doing that- look at how ANC plays- the 8 shots they blocked went into the corners or to their own players.

And then look at the flipside: the Whalers' rebound control was decent at best. The stats would make it seem like Leitner was a role of 2-ply out there, but I'd argue the opposite. Look at Barber's and Bust's goals and they have something in common: a decent rebound led to a goal. And these weren't open net goals, Anchorage was just able to capitalize. And Vancouver, if you're only going to block 4 shots at least hustle for them rebounds! I don't know if this is something that Vancouver's going to look at, but I would if I were them. Without those two goals, this could've been a very different game

UNSUNG HEROES:
ANC: Due to outstanding contributions, Eero Niemi is our Unsung Hero of the game. Niemi wasn't on the ice often, only logging 15 minutes in the game, but when Niemi was on, he was ON. Eero managed to rip off a team-high 4 shots on net. Unfortunately all attempts were blocked or saved. Though on one occaision, a misdirected shot from Niemi bounced right to Bust who tucked it past Leitner to put the Armada up by 3.

VAN: Hockey is turning into a faster-pace game, and heavy hitting is looking at a beaming EXIT sign and becoming increasingly more rare. Don't tell that to Benois Minuscule, though, who made an impact in the 3rd period by delivering 4 heavy hits in the span of about 30 seconds - I don't wanna be trapped in a room with that guy for 30 seconds. Xena managed to get slammed twice by Minuscule. Don't sleep on this guy, because he will kill you.

THE IRONMAN:
VAN: It takes a village to raise a child, but it takes someone playing about 23:36 to get a mention on the Internet regarding how much they played in a simulation game. Guess what, Tauras Karazija - YOU JUST GOT THE IRONMAN-ABLE MENTION. Karazjia was on the ice for over a third of the game. However, he was rather unnoticed regarding his stats. The defenseman went -1 and had a hit and two blocked shots (a team high!) over the course of the game.

ANC: Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day, teach a man to desire - to crave - TPE So much that he'll scour pages and pages of games links looking for "needles" - stories that mean something to no one. Well, I have been taught and now I'm gonna go pedagogue-y all over this place. GUESS WHAT, Vegeta Muerto, you just earned the IRONMAN-ABLE MENTION for playing 23:19 tonight - a team high. The team Saiyan contributed an assist along with a hit and a shot block. Cheers!

THE BAD BOY (OR IN THIS CASE GIRL):
Bad girls need love, too. Though, in this case, it seems that the girl needs 4 minutes in the penalty box. Leopold Lockhart's SMJHL debut was a fantastic one. She was all over the ice, from the bottom of her skates to.... well, I guess just the bottom of her skates. Perhaps the fact that she only touched the ice with her skates (and stick, I guess) caused her to rage because Lockhart was the perpetrator of two minor penalties. One of those penalties was poorly timed, though, as it allowed Vancouver to score on the powerplay. Discipline will be a necessary evil for Lockhart if she wants to be on the ice more often.

Comment One

Rookie Performer of the Game - Mika Mayfield - Left Wing - Anchorage Armada

Tonight's rookie of the game goes to the Anchorage Armada's 7th Overall Pick: Mika Mayfield. Playing the majority of the game on the Armada's 2nd line at the left wing position, Mayfield was responsible for the Armada's second goal of the game, and played a total of 17:15, a majority of those minutes being played on the Armada's powerplay. Throughout the game, Mayfield showed great hustle and both an offensive and defensive prowess, becoming a solid two-way threat for the Armada's forward core throughout the game. All eyes are on Mayfield as the Armada now move to take on the Vancouver Whalers next.

Harrington's Thoughts - Armada Come Out on an Undisciplined Win

While the Armada were extremely skilled and deadly against a fairly unprepared Vancouver Whalers team, an unacceptable portion of the Armada's game was their discipline. In just their first game of the season, the Armada took a total of five penalties. If they were going up against a much more offensively potent team, the game would have gone much more differently. Five penalties are unacceptable, especially for a team like the Armada who have their eyes on the playoffs and enormous Four Star cup aspirations. If the Armada want a successful season, what needs to happen is that they need to play a much more disciplined game in order to minimize the amount of scoring chances against.

Comment Three

Cruisin' For a Bruisin' - Benois Minuscule - Defense - Vancouver Whalers

The steady and constant presence of Benois Minuscule was welcomed by the Vancouver Whalers. The 6'6", 221 pound Latvian defenseman led the game in hits with 4. Thanks to his stature and intensity, Minuscule was a defensive and physical specimen for the Whalers' this evening as he was able to both crush and shutdown his opponents all game long. Despite going pointless, and having a -1 rating, Minuscule was a powerplay workhorse for the Whalers this evening, with 3:45 of his 21:59 total minutes played being on the Whalers' powerplay. Regardless of his individual points (or lack of), Minuscule was a great veteran presence for the Whalers this evening.

Tomen's Goalie of the game:

Today's goalies are Larry Atta for the Anchorage Armada and Johannes Leitner for the Vancouver Whalers. The Armada won this game with 4 to 2 against the Whalers even though one would say that the Whalers have the better team.

As for the pure goalie stats:
As you can see Atta manged to save 24 of 26 shots which means he saved 92.31% of the shots faced which is a great value. Now let's look on the % of good saves (good saves = shots which didn't result in a rebound). Atta had quite the bad night in this department because half of his saves resulted in a rebound and 83.33% of these rebounds was picked up by aplayer of the Vancouver Whalers. It's surprising that the Whalers weren't able to score a goal of these rebounds.
Now for Leitner: Saved 30 out of 34 shots face resulting in a Save % of 88.24% which is sub par but not that bad. Leitner had a better time controling the % of rebounds. He would allow 23.33% of his shots to be rebounds which is better than Atta. But every single one of these rebounds was retrieved by players of the Armada which is something horrible.

TGOTG: Larry Atta. He dominated Leitner in SV% and Bad Rebound %. The only metric he lost out to Leitner was the Good Save%.

3 Stars of the Game

1st star: Doug Dimmadome

Doug Dimmadome had a monster night for the Anchorage Armada. He ended up registering a goal and an assist, finishing the night with a healthy +2 rating. On top of that he was tied for 2nd on t he team in shots for the night with 4, and also contributed one hit in just over sixteen minutes played. His lone goal of the night came at even strength as did the assist. You can easily see why this was a 1st star performance.

2nd star: Mika Mayfield
Not every night is going to be great for padding your stats, and tonight wasn’t one of those indeed. Mika Mayfield did however score a key goal in the game off the stick of Doug Dimmadome. Second goal scored in the game and also right before the end of the second period. That has to hurt. Mika also had 4 shots on net tying with Doug Dimmadome, a +2 rating, and 2 hits registered on the night.

3rd Star: Bill Barber
Bill Barber went out and had a similar night to their teammate Mika Mayfield. 1 goal, a +2 rating, and one shot blocked. An interesting thing to note is that he scored on his only shot. Definitely taking advantage of your opportunities there and this has to be a reason why he is the third star of the game.

3 Stars of the Game

3 - Bill Barber (ANC) - 1G, 0A, 1P, +2, 0PIM. This stat line was good enough to get Barber 3rd star of the game. With one of the lower minutes played on his team, he was able to capitilize during his time on the ice and was fortunate enough to open the score for the Armada.

2 - Mika Mayfield (ANC) - 1G, 0A, 1P, +2, 0PIM. Mayfield was not afraid to shoot tonight as her 4 shots showed and she was able to squeak one by the Whalers netminder. A force on the ice, Mika was used in all situations and was able to show why she's relied on.

1 - Doug Dimmadome (ANC) - 1G, 1A, 2P, +2, 0PIM. The first star of the game, Doug was on fire from the moment his skates hit the ice. Assisting on Mayfields goal and scoring one of his own, he just simply could not be stopped tonight.

TSN Turning Point

The turning point of this game was Busts goal I feel like. Scoring 30 seconds before the 1st intermission really put the Whalers down in the dumps as they headed back to their locker room. Being scored on that late in the period and having to come out to start the 2nd down by 2 is hard, but not horrible. Then 4 minutes into the 2nd, Bust comes out and pots one in and really puts the dagger in the Whalers hearts. From that moment on, there was no doubt that this game would be the Armadas game to win.

Worst Player of the Game

Andrew Martin (VAN) - 0G, 0A, 0P, -1, 0PIM. Playing almost 21 minutes, Martin led all centremen of the Whalers in ice time, but that is about all he led in. In 25 faceoffs, Martin only managed to win a measly 8. He was somehow trusted by his coach to be used in all situations seeing significant time on both the power play and penalty kill. What he was doing out there I am not to sure as he didn't register anything on the stat line. No shots, hits, shot block, takeaways and surprisingly no giveaways, Martin was basically a ghost out there.

Larry Atta collecting the W.

Larry Atta came up with a solid performance for the first game of the season. Posting a 92.3% saves on 26 shots. He only allowed 2 goals against which is good and something to build on. He got alot of help in the defensive zone and the team also managed to put up 4 goals on the Vancouver whalers goalie Johannes Leitner who had to face 34 shots fron the Anchorage Armada offense. Johannes Leitner looked a little rusty, which is understandable in the season opener but he has to up his game if the Whalers are gonna compete for the championship. His 88.2% is expected to improve as the whalers continue to mesh as a team.

The Insignificantly Significant Player Of The Game.
A ridiculous Wawazat award .. Awarded to the player with less than 7 minutes of ice time that actually registered something positive.
For this edition we reach all the way back to Game 1 of the 45th season of the SMJHL.
The Tenth recipient of this trivial achievement..
From the Anchorage Armada Fourth Line Right Wing Elias Armia Jr.
Armia stepped up big in just 7:42 of precious ice time ( just 42 seconds over the barrier.. So we're going with it.) in this the First game of S45 with an assist on the first goal of the season ( scored by Bill Barber) at 3:18 of the First period. Elias Armia didn't stop there his stat line includes going 1/1 from the face off circle and firing 3 shots on goal, and still finding time to serve a 2 minute minor penalty. Guess he needed a breather from all that activity. He finished at a respectable 0(+/-) . Elias Armia Jr. is the 10th Winner of the Insig/Sig Award. Congratulations Elias Armia.
