PGS S44 Game 35: Montreal vs Kelowna
#1

Militia Montreal Militia vs. Kelowna Knights Knights

This was an all-Canadian matchup between the struggling Montreal Militia and the surprising Kelowna Knights. Montreal had started off woefully and was yet to win a game while sporting a 0-6-1 record, with two of those losses coming against this Knights team. Kelowna, meanwhile, had started off the season with a bang, going 8-1 and sitting on top of the league. It was a battle between the best and worst teams in the SMJHL, and despite the disparity in the standings, it was the Militia who ended up on top with a dominant 5-2 victory.

1st Period
On the very first shift of the game, Kelowna’s top line found their way into the Montreal zone and Kelowna forward Boris Denisovich ripped a shot home from the slot to open the scoring. Vladislav Konstantin and Sanyi Kocsis picked up assists on the play. The early goal didn’t discourage the Militia though, and a couple of penalties by the Knights shifted the momentum in Montreal’s favour. The Militia scored 3 goals in quick succession to end the period, with tallies coming from Cody Johansen, Andreas Kvalheim and Daniel Daniil.

2nd Period
Four minutes into the second period, Kelowna’s penalty woes continued as Scott Niedermayer Jr headed to the box for high-sticking. The Militia capitalized with the man advantage, as Derek Bohne finished off a nice passing play to bring the score to 4-1. Evidently, the Kelowna coach had seen enough, as goalie ZzScott Foster was pulled from the game. Foster’s excellent play had been the talk of the SMJHL so far, but tonight the Militia got the better of him, having scored 4 goals on just 11 shots. ZzNed Flanders came in to replace Foster, but Derek Bohne was at it again, scoring his 2nd goals and 3rd point on the night as Montreal took a commanding 5-1 lead.

3rd period
The Knights came out strong to start the third. Shouta Aizawa had two prime scoring opportunities, as he was robbed on a breakaway by a sprawling Petr Vrana and then hitting the post on a one-timer later in the play. A few minutes later, Kelowna was finally able to beat Vrana as Justin Siddals set up Sanyi Kocsis nicely for a backdoor tap in. From there on out, it was a sloppy game, with few chances for either team. The game ended 5-2 for the Militia, who finally got their first win of the season.

Some quick little facts between these two teams:

Montreal and Kelowna met 7 times last regular season, with the Knights winning 5 of them.
Prior to this match, these two teams faced each other in Games 6 and 24 this season, with Kelowna winning both meetings.
Montreal's Derek Bohne seems to have a penchant for playing the Knights, with a whopping 7 points racked up in all three of these meetings.
The Militia's Andreas Kvalheim and Daniel Daniil have also managed to put up a point in each one of these matchups.
Kelowna's Boris Denisovich also grabbed a very impressive 6 points out of Montreal in these games, with Scott Neidermayer Jr. trailing just behind with 4 points.

3 Stars of the Game

1st star: Derek Bohne
Derek Bohne is a deadly playmaking winger from Germany who had an excellent night tonight putting up 2 goals and an assist for Montreal. Very impressive. On top of that he had four shots and also played the center position winning 13/24 of his draws showing some versatility along with his pure offensive talent.

2nd star: Daniel Daniil
Daniel Daniil showed off his two-way style tonight with a goal and an assist for the Montreal Militia. He also had three shots and three hits capping off a productive night good for 2nd star of the game.

3rd Star: Sanyi Kocsis
A two way defenseman from Hungary, Sanyi definitely earned his third star rating of the night putting up one goal and one assist for the Kelowna Knights. Despite the night not being the best showing for the Knights this defenseman came out looking strong.

Player of the Game:
The player of the game in this game was clearly Montreal forward Derek Bohne. Scoring two goals and adding and assist for good measure, Bohne was a key contributor in this not so close game between the Montreal Militia and Kelowna Knights. He took 4 shots and was +1 during his 19 minutes of time on ice, but didn't record a hit or blocked shot. He was rightfully given the first star of the game, a feat that I'm sure he'll repeat many times this season. His strong performance was one of the main reasons why Montreal was able to rally and beat the league leading Kelowna Knights.

Goalie of the Game:
Petr Vrana of the Montreal Militia is our goalie of the game. Improving his record to 1-1-0 with his first win of the season, Vrana posted a 0.917 save percentage during this game and only let in 2 goals. He faced 24 shots, saving 22 of them. He let in the first goal of the game less than a minute into said game, but then didn't let in another until the early third period. His team had provided plenty of offence at that point and he had an easy game with a 4 goal lead entering the third. He didn't let up however and delivered for Montreal, earning him the goalie of the game award.

Kelowna Rookie Watch:
Nolan Sawchuk of the rookie trio had a very quiet game. He didn't post a point despite taking 4 shots, and wasn't particularly good on the defensive side either. He didn't have a hit or a blocked shot, but was even in plus/minus. Nickolas Klaus played similarly in this one. He didn't get any points but had almost 2 minutes of penalty kill time and was still an even plus/minus. He had 2 shots on net in an otherwise quiet game from the two rookie forwards. Sanyi Kocsis however had a much more eventful game. He had a goal that came from his only shot on net, and he recorded an assist as well. He was also even in plus/minus, played almost 22 minutes, blocked 3 shots and made 1 hit. It was an eventful game for the rookie defender who had it been a closer game would've been in contention for player of the game.
