Game 39 PGS: KEL-COL
#1

Kelowna Knights at Colorado Raptors
Game 39
Knights 1 - Raptors 3

After some early season goal scoring struggles, the Colorado Raptors put together a complete game to knock off the streaking Kelowna Knights 3-1 at InGEN Arena. Rookie forward Alexander Selich, fresh off being picked first overall in the S44 SMJHL Entry Draft, scored his first two goals of the season, while the stalwart top pair of Sachimo Zoidberg Jr and Kevin Maddox continued to heat up, each recording a pair of assists.

Period 1

Shots: Knights 6  Raptors 4
Score: Knights 0 Raptors 0

Both teams started slow, resulting in a scoreless first period. Raptors defender Jean-Pierre Gay recorded a pair of penalties. The first saw him attempt to slow down standout Kelowna forward Vladislav Konstantin with a hook at 1:17 of the period. The second, at 13:17, occurred when he tried to slew foot Knights rookie goaltender Scott Foster during an offensive zone possession. The Raptors penalty kill, led by forward Alex Winters and defenders Nico Wallner and Kevin Maddox, were able to keep the puck out of their net.

Period 2

Shots: Knights 9  Raptors 9
Score: Knights 1 Raptors 2

Rookie winger Selich opened the scoring at 5:19. Zoidberg Jr fed rookie left winger Jakub Novak on the breakout pass. Novak carried the puck into the zone, barreling toward Foster. He faked a shot, then slid around the net to feed Selich along the half boards. Two dekes and a backhand shot later and the Raptors were up 1-0. He spent little time waiting for his next shot, scoring again at 8:48. Center Zivan Zidek beat Justin Siddals for the faceoff. The puck slid back to the right point, where Maddox quickly fed a pass to Zoidberg on the right point before skating toward the center of the ice. Zoidberg passed it right back to Maddox, who made a no look backhand pass to Selich down low. His shot bounced harmlessly off Foster’s left pad, and right back to the waiting German who popped the rebound past past Foster for his second of the night.

The Knights responded at 11:19, when star winger Vladislav Konstantin blasted a blistering wrister past Scottey Crawfling. They were killing a tripping penalty assessed to Casey Matz at 10:46. Sanyi Kocsis carried the puck up the ice on the rush, and slid it to Oliver Dahl on the change. Dahl paused for a moment to handle the puck a little past center ice, before carrying it into Colorado’s defensive zone and losing it off a poke check from J. P. Gay. Konstantin recovered the puck, deked past rookie Cassius Darrow and released an absurd wrist shot to bring Kelowna back within one goal.

Period 3
Shots: Knights 10  Raptors 11
Score: Knights 1 Raptors 3

The teams battled each other for control, neither team giving much ground. The teams seemed to be evenly matched to start the period, until Kelowna winger Nick McKee was assessed a double minor for slashing Guy McCool. While the Raptors couldn’t convert, they kept possession for much of the powerplay, wearing down the Knights penalty killers. They could not beat Foster, who looked dialed in throughout the period.

Gay went away for his third penalty of the night, an interference call, at 16:54. Kelowna gave it their all, pulling Foster with 27 seconds left in the penalty and 1:33 left in the period. Kevin Maddox blocked a shot from Scott Niedermayer, Jr. Nico Wallner, still out there after killing the penalty, grabbed the puck and protected it for a few seconds before dropping it for Maddox behind the Raptors’ net. Maddox carried the puck up the left wing and out of their defensive zone, hitting a wide open Alex Winters with a cross center ice pass. Winters deked and wristed the puck into the open net to put the Raptors up 3-1 with only 3 seconds left in the game.

Notes
·       COL has won 3 out of their last 4 and now stand at 5-5 on the season. Kelowna, after a red hot and entirely unexpected 7-1 start have dropped their last two games. The Knights lead the season series with Colorado 2-1-0 heading into their next meeting at home on Day 28.
·       J. P. Gay continues to lead the league in penalty minutes by a large margin (40 PIM through 10 games). Stylistically a throwback to the punishing defenders of the 1980s, Gay has also contributed elsewhere, with a +2 rating and 4 assists so far this season.
·       The Raptors’ top pair of Kevin Maddox and Sachimo Zoidberg now have produced 10 and 6 assists, respectively, on the season, and have been a huge part of the recent surge by the Raptors. Colorado’s defense has been jumping into the play more, and it’s led to more scoring across the lineup.

Comment One:
Three Stars of the Night

1 - Alexander Selich (COL)
The first overall pick in the S44 SMJHL Entry Draft scored his first two goals of the season in the second preiod of this game, the first coming at 5:19 and the second less than four minutes later at 8:48. If you're going to wait to do something, might as well do it right. That made two of his five shots on goals a success.

2 - Kevin Maddox (COL)
Maddox contributed to Selich's second goal in the second period at 8:48, earning his 9th assist of the season, and then contributed a second assist in the third with three seconds left to spare. He also had the highest +/- of the Raptors at +3 and managed one shot on goal and one hit this game, not doing too bad for receiving the most ice time of the Raptors this game.

3 - Sachimo Zoidberg Jr. (COL)
Zoidberg Jr. got to be there to witness Selich's first two goals of his SMJHL career, assisting on both in the second period. He also came out of the game with 3 shots blocked and 2 hits.

Comment Two:
Rookie Contributions of the Game

The Colorado Raptors had six rookies play this game out of the seven on their team (Aleksandr Aleksandrov is their backup goalie and did not receive ice time this game) and the Kelowna Knights had four rookies play.

Raptors
Everyone expected Alexander Selich (first overall pick) to do well, and unfortunately for the Knights, he came alive this game with two goals. Konstantin Voloshin had two shots on goal, one hit, and blocked one shot. He won almost a third of his faceoffs (10/33) but still has a ways to go. Cassius Darrow blocked the most shots this game (5) and is receiving a decent amount of ice time for a rookie. Jakub Novak received an assist in the second period, showing that he might have potential with Selich. Zivan Zidek kept a +2 and won 5/7 of his facoffs, proving that he might be a new star center yet. Guy McCool shot once but missed the net, but at least he's got his name working for him. Eren Yeager got one shot on goal and one hit this game.

Knights
Sanyi Kocsis is on the Knights first pairing, as well as on the powerplay and penalty kill. He got a point this game, three shots on goal, one hit, but put himself in the penalty box for hooking. Nolan Sawchuk had four shots on goal and blocked one shot. Nickolas Klaus won 51% of his faceoffs, showing his lead forward potential, and got one shot on goal and blocked two shots. Jeffery Murphy won both his faceoffs and got a hit in this game. Even though the Knights lost this game, their rookies are certainly trying.

Comment Three:
Leading to the Goal of the Game

After a scoreless first period, the Colorado Raptors were ready to put some points up. Alexander Selich made a shot before missing the net, but on his second shot in the second, it went in, putting the Raptors up by 1. A few minutes later, the Raptors felt like putting themselves up by 2. After Darrow moved the puck into the Knights zone and created a good line change moment for the Raptors, that put Selich on the ice with Zoidberg Jr. and Maddox. The puck was retrieved in the Knights zone by Krumins, but then after a pass to Maximino, Maximino lost the puck with pressure put on him by the Raptors. The puck was retrieved by Selich who passed to Maddox to put it back in the neutral zone. Maddox and Zoidberg Jr. felt like giving Selich a better night and figured he had a chance to score a second goal, so after a pass to Zoidberg Jr., Zoidberg Jr. faked a shot and passed to Selich who managed to trick ZzScott Foster, putting the Raptors up by 2.

Timo Haas' Goalie of the Game

Young Goaltender Scottey Crawfling came out in this game and was set to dominate. His time between the posts was one of complete supremacy. A large number of the shots came against Crawfling late in the game when the Knights were attempting to level the game after the mid second period goal by Vladislav Konstantin brought them within one. But the Raptors goaltender said, "oh no no" to every single shot he faced and was the stalwart that the Colorado squad needed to pull out this game. Crawfling has now been a goaltender for the Raptors for three seasons and he seems to be coming into his own. The way he shut down one of the top squads in the SMJHL shows that Scottey is ready to take on the responsibility of being a goaltender in the SHL sooner than later. What a performance by the goalie and he is the reason his team was able to secure the win!

Unsung Hero(es) brought to you by Virgin Mobile

The Colorado Raptors performers were extremely solid in this game. Many of the players that had a major impact showed up on the scoreboard, with the likes of Selich, Zoidberg, and even Maddox getting recognition. But the player of the game that won't get any credit? Tony Pepperoni. The top center for the Colorado Raptors won half of his 30 faceoffs in this game and was majorly important in setting the stage for other players. While held completely off the scoring sheet, Pepperoni pitched in with his faceoff chops, his puck control ability, and was the unquestioned leader of the Colorado Raptors squad in the game. We must also mention rookie Konstantin Voloshin for his Shot Blocks and Hits, despite his terrible faceoff record in this game. These two players, specifically Pepperoni, are the unsung hero(es) of this game, as their play helped pave the way to a close victory for the Colorado Raptors against the upstart Kelowna Knights.

Post Game Statement from Co-GM Kim Jong Fun

The Colorado Raptors believe they are moving in the right direction. We like the strides our players are making and believe that with the roster we have we could play for a championship as early as this season. There are great scorers on the Raptors and I think as we solidify more as a team we will be one of the most dangerous squads in all of the league. Our first line is scary and today has proven that we have weapons as deep as the third line with the likes of Alex Selich. There is no reason to believe that the next few seasons will be very good for the this team. Tonight we had all of our guys clicking and playing the way they need to for us to be dangerous. I am particularly excited by our depth scoring. We knew the Cold Pizza line would come out scoring this season, and well, they are. But seeing players like Selich starting to produce makes us a very good team in the long run. If we play like we did tonight, nothing is going to get in our way of going very deeply into the playoffs.

Our ESPN player of the game.... is from the Colorado Raptors... Sachimo Zoidberg Jr.

We were going to give it to Sachimo Zoidberg Jr. along since he had a monster night. Zoidberg assisted on both of the raptors first two goals which got the team the initial lead, both goals by Alexander Selich. On top of that he was not on the ice for a goal against. Which shows how impressive of a night he had. Then Zoidberg added three shots on net from the blue line, two massive hits and three, yes three blocked shots. A big game for the veteran blue liner.

Player of the Game:
Colorado Raptors rookie forward Alexander Selich is tonight's player of the game. Selich scored 2 of Colorado's 3 goals to lead them over the Kelowna Knights. An interesting fact, these are so far the only two goals that the first overall pick has scored on the season. Despite only receiving 13 minutes of ice time, Selich had 5 shots on net, and also made a huge hit against Kelowna defender Antonio Calculon. He was a key player for a young Colorado Raptors team that has been hot lately, and they got a huge 2 points against a slumping Kelowna Knights squad who has quite a few rookies of their own.

What's Happening in Kelowna?
Despite starting off the season 7-1-0 the Kelowna Knights have lost their last 2 games. From an outside glance the team seems to be doing alright, but when talking to their head coach we got to the source of the problem. Here's what he had to say.
"We just simply aren't getting enough quality scoring chances. We've played a couple teams that have obviously changed up their defensive style against us and they are shutting us down completely. We've got some fast forwards that could burn defenders before, but teams have been tightening up and aren't letting them past as easy. We've still got some work cut out for us if we want to continue like we have."
Only time will tell if Kelowna manages to keep up their torrid pace from the start of the season, or if they end up falling off.

Potential Rookie of the Year?:
Kelowna Knights defender Sanyi Kocsis has starting the season hot, and should he continue the pace he's on he has the potential to be this year's SMJHL rookie of the year. In this game alone Kocsis added his 7th assist of the year, and had a solid defensive game. He's a valuable player to this young Kelowna squad that would be lost without his smooth skating, hard shot, and reliable puck movement from the point. Also keep an eye on fellow rookies Nolan Sawchuk and Nickolas Klaus who could be potential dark horses in this years rookie of the year voting.

Tomen's goalie of the game:

Scottey Crawfling: Why? This is actually a fairly tough one to decide but in the end Crawfling performed better in 2 statics and most importantly in the one that has the biggest impact on the game which is save percentage. Crawfling posted a nice 96% compared to Kelowna goalie Foster who ended the game with a 91.3% save percentage which is still good but simply just not as good as Crawfling in this game. Now we get to the one statistic Foster actually was better in than Crawfling it's the Good Save% which means that Foster had less rebounds per save with 19.05% compared to the Colorado goalie with 29.17% but Crawfling had fewer rebounds end up in the opponents possession which is still a gud sign with 71.43% to 75% from Foster.
