PGS S44 Game 40: Montreal vs St. Louis
#1

Militia Montreal Militia vs. St. Louis Scarecrows Scarecrows
Now, let’s go to St. Louis to take a look at tonight’ matchup between the Montreal Militia and the St. Louis Scarecrows. The Militia have struggled mightily to start the season, having lost their first 7 games. However, they picked finally picked up a win in their last outing, and will likely use that as momentum. Their opponents, the Scarecrows, have been one of the better teams thus far. With goalie Alester Cain in net, they have a dominant 6-1-2 record.

1st Period
The Scarecrows come out of the gate flying, and the Militia seem to be caught off-guard and get into some early penalty trouble. Milo Momoka and Dinars Briedis of Montreal took minor penalties just three seconds apart, giving St. Louis a nearly 2 minute long 5 on 3. The Militia PK comes up big though, and the Scarecrows only manage one shot, right at the end of the powerplay. But St. Louis still opened the scoring, with star Nicky Pedersen Jr beating Vrana on a breakaway. A few minutes, the Scarecrows would score again as Roger Baston banged home a goal in a scramble in front of the Militia net. The 1st period was dominated by the Scarecrows, as they won the shots battle 13-4.

2nd Period
Things got a bit chippy to start the second, as Scarecrows’ dman Helmuts Akmenlauks drove to the net and took out Vrana. A brief scrum ensued as Montreal stepped up to protect their goalie, but Akemnlauks was the only player penalized on the play. However, they were unable to capitalize on the power play. The Militia, in desperate need of a goal had the majority of the possession during this period but was unable to get a puck by Cain.

3rd period
The third period starts much as the second ended, with Montreal controlling much of the play. Akmenlauks found himself in the box again early in the frame. This time, Montreal was able to capitalize as rookie Griffith Cadwalader found the back of the net. Montreal continued to press for the equalizing goal, but Cain was outstanding in net for the Scarecrows. With a minute left in the net, Montreal pulled the goalie for an extra attacker. St Louis defenseman Airi Yamaguchi was fearless, throwing his body in front of back-to-back slapshots from Hudson and Fisterbottom. However, the puck came to Jeff Brogen, who sniped it past Cain to force OT with just 16 seconds left in regulation.

Overtime/Shootout
Overtime was a boring affair, as neither team managed to record a single shot. It seemed they were content with deciding the game via shootout and the got their wish. Montreal hero Jeff Brogen was up first, and he beat Cain five-hole. From there, the next four shooters all missed, meaning Jerry Larry had to score for the Scarecrows. However, his shot sailed wide of the net, giving Montreal their second win of the season.

Final Score
Militia 3-2 (SO) Scarecrows

Comment 1:
We'll analyse the first period here and look deeper into the stats of what really happened behind those penalties, with Montreal seemingly getting the rough end of the stick (no pun intended).
First penalty occurred at 4:31.
Quote:Pass to Kiko Rytmeyr. Kiko Rytmeyr is hit by Willy Mack and loses puck. Minor Penalty to Kevin Kazarian for High sticking.
As we can see here, Kevin Kazarian wasn't even on the play when the call was made. The only thing we can take out of it is that maybe he got unlucky in a collision but in good news for Montreal they didn't convert on this play anyway.

Second penalty occurred at 7:26.
Quote:Nicky Pedersen Jr. loses puck. Free Puck Retrieved by Nicky Pedersen Jr. for St. Louis Scarecrows. Minor Penalty to Milo Momoka for Hooking.
Obviously Nicky Pedersen was close to making a breakaway on an open puck, or Milo was jousting with him for advantage and got his stick caught underneath his jersey. Unfortunate either way.

Third Penalty occurred at 7:29.
Quote:Pass to Kiko Rytmeyr. Pass to Nicky Pedersen Jr.. Minor Penalty to Dinars Briedis for High sticking.
I think it's clear that Dinars lost his cool here. To commit another penalty only 3 seconds after the other one is outrageous. Must have thought the hooking call was weak and wanted vengeance on Pedersen Jr.
Colorado will be kicking themselves they didn't put this period away further, being unable to capitalise on 1:57 of 3 on 5.

Comment 2:
Closer look into the second here, and we'll give you all the details on that bogus Goalie interference call too! How the league lets the refs get away with this kind of clear no call is beyond me. An absolutely outrageous decision that will surely be talked about for days to come.
First penalty occurred at 0:47
Quote:Pass to Kevin Kazarian. Pass to Dinars Briedis. Minor Penalty to Helmuts Akmenlauks for Goalie Interference.
Okay so here's what I interpret happened, because all of this happens while Montreal has the puck. STL brought into the offensive zone and lost puck the puck. Montreal begin to dig out and move the puck up ice. Then, as St. Louis is running back to defend their zone, Vrana comes out of his crease and intentionally runs into a player that is coming across the front of the goal mouth. He does this so slyly that he actually manages to make it look like the player took him out, and draws the penalty. The league should be looking to penalising him for sure, the fact you can't even touch a goalie is ludicrous! And furthermore he did it when his team had the puck! Shocking really. Absolute no call there, the refs should be ashamed.

Second penalty occurred at 14:39
Quote:Rowdy Smithers moves puck in Montreal Militia zone. Pass by Rowdy Smithers intercepted by Milo Momoka. Minor Penalty to Brock Nuck for Roughing.
I don't know what Brock was thinking here. As much as I defend STL for the previous penalty you can't just come across ice and head check them because they intercepted your play. Silly move and he's lucky MTL didn't take advantage of the situation.

Comment 3:
Now let's take a view of the third and final period and let me tell you I'm not done on Petr Vrana yet.
First penalty occurred at 0:54
Quote:Pass to Derek Bohne. Pass to Daniel Daniil. Minor Penalty to Helmuts Akmenlauks for Hooking.
Poor Helmuts. This really just wasn't his night with these refs for sure. First off he got that dodgy penalty in the second for doing basically nothing and now a suspect hooking call. I guess the refs didn't like where he put his stick but do they have to make it so blatantly obvious they don't like him? Moving on.

Second penalty occurred at 5:24
Quote:Pass to Veikka Toivanen. Pass to Milo Momoka. Minor Penalty to Kiko Rytmeyr for Hooking.
Obviously Kiko didn't learn anything from 5 minutes before this or he has short term memory loss. Sometimes you have to read the refs and know what they are going to let you get away with for the night. Mimicking Helmuts' exact play wasn't a very bright move. He'll learn with time.

Third penalty occurred at 10:54
Quote:Pass to Nicholas Williams. Shot by Nicholas Williams. Stopped by Petr Vrana without a rebound. Minor Penalty to Petr Vrana for Slashing.
I would have tossed Vrana out of the game at this point. He was clearly being absolutely reckless with his plays and had no regard for player safety at all. It's one thing to check a player and blind side him as he's coming through, it's another thing to openly slash someone on the ice when you've stopped the play dead. He should be given at least 2 games sat out to think about his actions but this soft management by the league will never see that happen. On a slightly positive note at least the refs actually did something about him on this play. Atrocious behaviour and he should hang his head in shame.

Our ESPN player of the game.... is from the St. Louis Scarecrows.... Kiko Rytmeyr

Kiko Rytmeyr had a beautiful pass to set up the second goal of the game for the Crows where they took the two goal lead in the first period. Kiko was also not on the ice for a sinlge goal against all game. Additionally he had a night of twos. He had two minutes of penalties, he had two shots on net from the blue line, he had two big hits to set the tone and he blocked two shots. The two-two-two-two night for Kiko makes him our player of the game.

Militia Three Stars of Game 40 Scarecrows
1. LW - Griffith Cadwalader Militia (1-0-1, +1, 3 SOG, 9:06 TOI)
2. C - Roger Baston Scarecrows (1-0-1, +1, 3 SOG, 1 HIT, 57% FO, 21:01 TOI)
3. RW - Nicky Pedersen Jr. Scarecrows (1-0-1, +0, 2 SOG, 2 HIT, 20:32 TOI)

Fourth line rookie Left Winger Griffith Cadwalader takes home his first star of the game tonight in St. Louis.  Jeff Brogen was a strong contender to take that top spot with both the game tying goal at 19:44 in the 3rd and the game winner to open the shoot out.  Unfortunately, he had a rough night defensively as he was on the ice for both goals against.  Nonetheless, Cadwalader opened up the scoring for Montreal with a deflect on Cody Johansen's shot early in the 3rd and for that, his star is well earned.

Tomen's goalie of the game:

Petr Vrana: Why? This is the closest decision I had to make so far both have almost the exact Save percentage. Vrana has 89.475 on 19 shots while Cain has 90% on 20 shots. Basically if Vrana would have faced one more shot and saved it they would be identical. Vrana also had a fairly better Good Save % than Cain in this game with 82.35% compared to the Scarecrows goalie with 72.22%. Now Vrana allowed a higher bad rebound % than Cain with 66.67% to 60% so Cain has the advantage there. In the end both face the shootout where Vrana outshined Cain and ultimately this was the reason for his win. He saved both shots that he face while Cain let 1 in which led to his team losing.
