S44 Game 59 VAN-DET PGS
#1

Vancouver Whalers @ Detroit Falcons
Game 59
Whalers 2 - Falcons 4

Period 1

Shots: Whalers 17  Falcons 3
Goals: Whalers 1 Falcons 1

Vancouver started this game strong having a barrage of shots after only 4 minutes. But Detroit recovers as Nat Emerson intercepts a pass from David Kastrba and slings it to Marc Palicka who buries it with 11:13 left in the first. It doesn't take long for Vancouver to answer however as an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty from Tobias Viklund gives Carlo Russo the opportunity to pick up the loose puck behind the net and tuck it past Cedric Robinson for a power play goal with exactly 7:00 left to play.

Period 2

Shots: Whalers 8(25)  Falcons 17(20)
Goals: Whalers 1(2) Falcons 2(3)

This time around its Detroit who comes out of the gate firing on all cylinders, but they struggle to find the back of the net after some great goalie work from Johannes Leitner. The tides turn back towards the Whalers favor though as Noah Nowes nets his 9th of the season with 6:03 left to play in the 2nd. Benois Miniscule and Shaquille Derisraka picked up the assists. It didn't take long for the falcons to get back on track though as Xavier Cross scores a beauty assisted by Marc Palicka and Jimmy Cahill with 4:47 remaining in the period. David Kastrba gets called for a holding penalty with 3:56 remaining giving the falcons an opportunity which Tig Murphy will capitalize on only 6 seconds later, with 3:50 left, with Hippo Passamus and Marc Palicka picking up the assists. Falcons hold their lead until the end of the period with the score in their favor at 3-2.

Period 3
Shots: Whalers 4(29)  Falcons 12(32)
Goals: Whalers 0(2) Falcons 1(4)

Letting emotions get the better of him, Cash Considerations gets called for a roughing minor on a hit on Chuck Crutchfield at 2:22 in the first. The Falcons are however unable to capitalize on the chance despite keeping constant pressure. Vancouver gets the chance to tie it up as Jimmy Cahill gets called for hooking after 7:07, but also fail to capitalize on the opportunity. Clearly frustrated with the way the game is going, Barret McCarthy gets called for tripping setting up a Falcons power play after 16:23. With this Hippo Passamus is able to seal the game away, with help from Ola Wagstrom and Pingy Pingu, making the score 4 to 2 with only 3:21 remaining.

Three Stars:
1.     Marc Palicka Falcons
2.     Hippo Passamus Falcons
3.     Xavier Cross Falcons

Comment 1: Four Star Cup Preview?
This far into the season, most experts will say that the Vancouver Whalers and Detroit Falcons are the two favorites for the Four Star Cup. The Whalers of course, are the reigning champions and have retained most of their cup-winning core from last season. The Falcons also have an experienced squad, are have been lighting up the SMJHL this season. If this game was any indication, and playoff matchup between these two teams will be fast-paced and exciting hockey. The play of Falcons goalie Cedric Robinson was the difference tonight, but who knows what might happen in the playoffs.

Comment 2: Physical Player of the Game
Benois Miniscule, defenseman for the Vancouver Whalers, was a physical monster tonight, dishing out a game high 4 hits. Despite what his name might suggest, Miniscule is a big boy, standing 6 foot 6 inches and weighing 221 pounds. He was an especially intimidating presence on the Whalers blueline tonight, nullifying Detroit attacks at ease with his physical play. He also contributed on the score sheet, with primary assists on both of Vancouver's goals. Detroit's most physical player on the night was Poopity Scoop who put up 4 hits and 1 shot block in just over 15 minutes of action.

Comment 3: Special Teams Battle
Detroit came out on top in the special teams battle, and that was a huge reason why they won this game. They picked up two penalties in the first period which was dominated by the Whalers. And while Vancouver scored on their first powerplay, the Detroit PK came up big on the second to keep the score tied at 1. Then in the second period, with the score tied at two, Detroit finally got a powerplay and Tig Murphy scored just 6 seconds in to take the lead. Late in the third period, Detroit were on another powerplay and this time, Hippo Passamus found the back of the net to seal the win for the Falcons.

Stonewall Auto's Defender of the Game

Here at Stonewall Auto in St. Louis, we believe in keeping you safe, that's why we're proud to present to you the Defender who kept their Goalie as safe as possible.  Tonight we're taking a look outside of our regular Scarecrows programming for a match up between the Vancouver Whalers and Detroit Falcons.

Tonight we have a pair of Defenders who brought their style in different ways.  Falcons goalie Cedric Robinson faced 29 shots with 7 blocks from skaters out front.  The first Defender of the Game is Tig Murphy with 3 of those 7 blocks, and a hit to boot.  The second Defender of the Game is Poopity Scoop who opted for 4 hits and 1 block, clearly deciding that the best blocked shot is the one that never fired.  In a crazy 20 second effort, Scoop tracked down and laid out each of the three different Whalers skaters who touched the puck, then iced it out of their zone.  Dank Boija and Chuck Crutchfield did the rest with a face off win, followed by a clean carry straight into the Whaler's zone.

Tomen's goalie of the game:

Cedric Robinson: Why? This is an easy choice because Robinson outperformed Leitner in 2 of the 3 statistical categories that I look at. The save percentage was just way better with 93.1% to 87.5% from Leitner. Robinson also managed to have the better Good save percentage with 77.78% to Leitner's 75%. In return the Whalers goalie was able to post a better bad rebound % in this game with 85.71% while every rebound of Robinson ended up in Whalers possession. All in all Robinson was just the better goalie in this game and helped Detroit quite a bit to secure the win.
