Anchorage Armada vs Halifax Raiders
Armada 4 - 1 raiders

In game 69, Anchorage did their best to shut the Raiders down defensively. They almost succeeded, allowing only 13 shots on goal, but the Raiders did manage to grab a goal on the Power Play in the 3rd. However, it was a simple case of "too little, too late" for the Raiders and the Armada sailed away with a 4-1 victory.

Period 1

This game got off to a hot start with the Armada scoring three goals in less than a minute. The first goal came from Eero Niemi at 5:39 off of an assist from Bust. Then, six seconds later, rookie Mika Mayfield hammered one in on Justin Willis to put the Armada up 2-0 early on. As if that wasn't enough of a head start, twenty-eight seconds after the second goal, Karl Von Wittelsbach scored a third for Anchorage. It was certainly looking good for them after the first, but there was plenty of time for the Raiders to make a comeback despite only registering three shots on goal in the entire first.

The only other notable moment in the period was a hooking penalty by Craig Finley at 13:00, but luckily for the Raiders, the Armada was unable to capitalize on the power play opportunity.

Score at the end of the first period: Armada 3 - 0 raiders

Period 2

The second period was another bust for the Raiders. And speaking of bust...Bust got the primary assist on Xena's goal, the only one of the period scored at 14:44. The period saw another Raiders penalty, but again the Aramada couldn't get their power play going. Luckily, their penalty kill held on, because they also had a penalty of their own. Anchorage ended the second up by 4 with no points for the Raiders who managed to beat their 3 shots from the first period, but only by 2.

Score at the end of the second period: Armada 4 - 0 :Raiders:

Period 3

The Raiders tried to make a comeback in the third, and they got their first goal off early enough that it might have been possible, but they just couldn't seem to make anything happen in their own zone. Rainbow Dash tallied their lone point of the game at 3:07 of the third in the dying seconds of a power play following a penalty from Arsene Arsenich for hooking. The Raiders had a penalty later on in the period, but again the Armada power play wasn't able to make anything happen. Still, they won the game quite handily after managing to hold the Raiders off for the rest of the period, ending the game with a total of 34 shots to the Raiders 13 and 4-1 on the scoreboard.

First Comment:
Third Time's A Charm
There were only twenty-eight seconds between Mika Mayfield's goal at 5:45 in the first period and Karl Von Wittelsbach's goal at 6:13, but the Armada and Wittelsbach especially were determined to bury the Raiders' confidence of winning this game in that less-than-a-minute play. Once Mayfield lost the puck on a hit by Ivars Ozols, the Armada had to fight their way back to the puck, but with the lack of defense on the Raiders' side this game, it wasn't too hard of a fight. After Justin Willis stopped Mayfield's next shot, Wittelsbach took advantage of the rebound at 6:05. While another rebound and two shots by Jacob Geza proved no luck next, the rebounds kept coming again and Wittelsbach took another shot at 6:11 where it missed the net. No problem from Wittelsbach though, there was no one around him, so he shot again at 6:13 and ta da, the shot went in. Third time's a charm, and luckily for the Armada, Wittelsbach didn't give up despite any frustrations that might have been experienced.

Second Comment:
Three Stars of the Game

1 - Karl Von Wittelsbach (ANC) - Wittelsbach helped open up scoring in this game with an assist on the first goal from Eero Niemi at 5:39 in the first and also got himself a goal less than a minute later at 6:13. Of his two shots on goal, only one didn't go in the net this game. He also blocked two shots that could have gone in.

2 - Eero Niemi (ANC) - Niemi had the first goal of the game at 5:39 in the first period and also assisted on a goal in the second at 14:44. He had three shots on goal and was 1/1 on his face-off. He also did a good job of keeping the puck in the Raiders zone.

3 - Xena (ANC) - Xena helped further the nail in the coffin for the Raiders this game with the fourth goal of the game in the second period at 14:44. She also had two shots on goal, one hit, and won 63.6% of her face-offs to help the Armada this game.

Third Comment:
Bust the Windows, He An Unsung Hero

Despite a confusing title to list Bust as an unsung hero of the game, he was definitely a big contribution to the Armada's win against the Raiders. He got his fifth assist of the season at 5:38 to help Niemi opening scoring in the first period, when really, some might have called that goal his, since it was a deflect. Bust was playing his own game this night and seemed to continue this trend into the second period when he shot at the net at 14:44 and his shot got deflected by Xena's stick but was angled right into the net for a goal. It would be impressive to see the young forward continue this trend if he chooses to use his teammates' sticks as a method to score goals for the Armada instead of getting the job done himself. Whether or not he actually meant to deflect from his teammates' sticks is up to debate, but it sure was fun for Armada fans to watch.

Game 69: ANC @ HAL

Comment #1:
Going into their final match up of the season on Day 37 (Game 73), let’s breakdown the season series between these two bitter rivals!
After Halifax dominated early in the year, Anchorage has won three straight by a 10-4 margin including tonight’s 4-1 drubbing of the Raiders. The season series stands at 4-2-0 Armada. Here are the head-to-head stats:

Head to Head Stats
Goals For:         raiders  16                  Armada 18
PIMS:               raiders 50                 Armada  46
Hits:                 raiders 98                    Armada  75
SB:                   raiders 43                   Armada  41
SOG:                raiders 147                 Armada  158
PP:                   raiders 5/25 (20%)      Armada  3/28 (10.7%)
PK:                  raiders 25/28 (89.3%)  Armada  20/25 (80%)

While Halifax has struggled the last few games against Anchorage, in the season series they have outplayed the Armada in two key areas: special teams and physicality. Halifax has outhit Anchorage 98-75, yet only have 4 more penalty minutes than the Armanda. This clean yet physical game has given the Raiders opportunities to get into the Armada players’ heads, leading to retaliatory penalties. When the Raiders do take penalties, they have killed them at almost a 90 percent clip, allowing only three powerplay goals in 28 opportunities. On the flip side, they have had success with the man advantage, scoring five powerplay goals in 25 attempts. Going into the final game between these teams, the physical game and special teams will no doubt be a major key for whichever team wins.

Comment #2: Shark Vacuums Unsung Hero of the Game: ANC @ HAL, Game 69
Is there any question that this is Karl Von Wittelsbach? The German defender played in all situations and finished with the second most time on ice with 21:52 (behind first year player Vegeta Muerto). He also produced a healthy stat line of a goal, assist, two shots, one hit, two blocked shots, and a +3 rating. Anytime good things happened for the Armada, Von Wittelsbach was on the ice tonight. While not a regular offensive contributor, the fifth-year player has produced 2-8-10 through the first 18 games for the Armada. The team was unable to convert on three power play chances, but Von Wittelsbach led all skaters with 2:21 on the powerplay and helped keep constant pressure on Raiders goaltender Justin Willis.

Unsullied by sponsorship as usual. The Halifax Raiders were simply terrible tonight, losing 4-1 to the Armada and getting outshot 34-13 in the process. How can a team only manage 13 shots in a game? Well, it all started in the first where the Armada to a 3-0 lead just minutes into a game. Perhaps after that, the Raiders just gave up and called it a day. Shots were 16-3 in the first period alone and the game was already over at this point. The Raiders 'improved' in the next two periods, putting up fice shots in each, and even managed a goal to make the scoreline more flattering. Overall, it was just an absolutely pitiful performance all around by the Halifax players.

Tomen's goalie of the game:

Hank Scorpio: Why? Fairly easy decision here even though Willis wasn't exactly put into a position to succeed by his raider teammates. Now for Scorpio his team actually performed in a way that helped the Armada conceal their fairly weak goalie. Scorpio still won this battle with a save percentage of 92.31% compared to the Halifax backup with 88.24% on 34 shots. Scorpio also had a great Good Save % with 91.67% which is head and shoulders over Willis' 56.67% in that statistic. Now Willis was able to post a better bad rebound % than Scorpio but in the end this was just a drop of water on a hot stone.
